As a console gamer my whole life, I think I'm going PC next gen.

A PC and switch 2 is all you need.

Sony's games will eventually be released on PC.

You can just emulate Switch 2 games sooner than later. And no I'm not advocating for piracy, you can buy the games and just play them on PC. Nintendo is like the super villain of gaming at this point. They need a time out.

I'd recommend OP get a Steam Deck though. It's the easiest entry to PC gaming (not expensive, plays everything, stand alone device) and it's an amazing device all around. You could wait for a Steam Deck 2 but who knows when thatll be.

Some people claim that if you don't dump the games yourself you are a criminal and should be taken to Nintendo prison.

I think that's silly, but there's opinions for everything.

It's just a disclaimer, I could care less what people do when it comes to Nintendo. I fucking hate those guys.

They should treat used games (or borrowing) as piracy as well: no one in the industry gets money.

Double-damage: buy used to emulate. xD

Buy used game.
Nintendo detects the same cart id being used in different consoles.
Treats it as piracy.
Console bricked.
Money stolen.
Wahoo!

Its not all sunshine and rainbows. 9070xt PC and PS5 Pro owner.

Like for me- every game runs great, BUT:

- COD BLOPS 6 is plagued with DirectX crashes for months now without a fix. I can't play at all. Resurgence and MW2 are problem free.

- Pathtracing keeps crashing (9070xt issue) on CP2077.

- Helldivers 2 had an issue with a setting that constantly crashed. Only way around it was to lower it even though your GPU can handle it just fine (SSR I believe).

- Stutter can be worse than console on stuttery games (Dead Space and UE5 games in general come to mind).

PC does provide generally a better experience (if you have the $$$) and no online cost like console, however you may need to deal with issues that may actually stop you from playing certains games for an unknown period of time.

Great post to keep me away from AMD. Damn. Not one issue with my 4070ti setup.

At the start of this Series x/PS5 generation I decided to upgrade my 1060 to a 3070ti and I have had absolutely zero regrets. Every game that I have personally wanted to play, has come to PC.

Enjoy your $4000 "gaming machine".

There are certainly many downsides to console gaming but NVidia and nvidia -$50 gpus don't exactly scream value either the cost is just ENTIRELY born up front

3. Demos. I love demos man. So I always get jealous when steam has these steam next fest events. I always feel like I'm missing out on some big gaming event. PlayStation doesn't have anything for me except a middle finger.

4. Folders. Why I gotta deal with this EVERY generation.

These 2 are kinda the most bizarre to me with consoles. All 3 of them have with each generation since the 360/PS3/Wii era steadily moved more towards digital distribution, yet the sorting options to manage your installed library is minimal, and folders/custom categories on the front boot menu should be a standard.

Given all 3 console makers also now host multiple shows per year to advertise games, it's weird they don't also do demos, or ideally time the shows to also be events to demo games. Win win for consumers to actually try games, and win for the platform holder to make more money.

I'm actually not sure what the OP means with the demo complaint. I can't speak for Xbox, but I've had access to them on PS since there first was a store. There's also this list of demos on their store site.

Edit: Does it mean a public demonstration of a game?

I bought a PS5 during the launch window.

Over the next several months I noticed that I wasn't enjoying the new releases so much and my biggest enjoyment from the system was playing PS4 games at a better resolution and framerate.

So I started making a switch towards PC gaming very slowly however when I finally got my hands on my launch window Steam Deck it rapidly increased the rate of my conversion to PC gaming.

So now I would say that I'm 95% PC, 4% PlayStation and 1% Nintendo.

Get an oled ultrawide monitor while you're at it. Once you've seen the light it's hard going back. Paired with steam deck and you're in a great place. I actually spend more time on the deck than I do on the pc itself, especially for cheap indie games I picked up on Steam sales.

It is however objectively a worse experience on a tv home entertainment system. You can absolutely make it work, but I do sometimes miss the ease of use of popping on a console and playing a game with no logging in or windows jank. Hopefully Xbox or Steam os figures that out.. once they do then truely I see no point to a console.

I think the OP meant, and what I definitely meant, was having themed events with a bunch of games offering demos at the same time.

Something they actually build up and advertise more, so you get more of the core playerbase on at a the same time to try more than just randomly scrolling down the PS store until you hit the demo section.

Also, during the Steam events they also adjust the storefront UI to make it easier to quickly just switch genres or tags to see different games, which games within those categories are trending the most, give preview info (more than a thumbnail) on them before even opening their page, and some of the new games showing demos get priority if they match your purchasing habits.

The best addition I've seen Playstation Store do is have a "browse by mood" category that tries to categorize based on vibe rather than genre.

There's a higher barrier to entry, but once you get to the other side, it is so worth it. The sheer freedom you have in just about every aspect - graphics options, modding, choice of peripherals, backwards compatibility - makes the console experience feel completely lackluster in comparison.

Probably the thing I miss the most about gaming on console is online gaming. On the PC, technically it's fine, but every now and then you see an obvious cheater and it sort of destroys the facade of online PC gaming. There are just far more cheaters out there than most people realize. Another thing is that tech influencers mislead you on how much your hardware should costs. Your PC is not going to last a whole console generation even if it's significantly better than the launch console. You will likely have to upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and GPU at least once mid way through the generation to keep up with ballooning recommended specs.

30fps on console != 30fps on PC

You will always want to be at 50+ with adaptive sync (which is still pretty rough).

Pc ps5 and steamdeck is the holy trinity of gaming right now. And yeah once you stop being lazy and dial in the settings you want, pc gaming is unmatched.

It doesnt matter, your PC will be soon called Xbox PC and after MS you will be a console gamer anyway.

Now, I think some of your complaints are legit. If Sony is to port 100% of their games and charge for the online of non F2P games, it's legit to think you can go to PC.

Now, I think Sony won't port all their games to PC, it has canceled some ports already and they are beginning to understand that if MS releases a consolized PC and there's a huge Frontline of PC Play Everywhere against them, one of their main weapons is exclusive games, not one year or two but really exclusive games as before 2020 and as Nintendo continues to do.

Besides, it's the last place for phisical games, doubles down as a UHD Blu Ray player and multimedia player, and differences between high end consoles and PC (high end) are increasingly slimmer, for bionic eyes more and more. It uses 150W instead of 600W, too.

I dont know, do what you feel to.

definitely pay the nvdia tax imo. their software is way more stable on both ends. and who can blame devs when its 90 to 10 what teams bugs are you going to iron out first.

How many console players in COD cheat with a Cronus box these days btw? Must be a high number, some youtube video I saw last week suggested cheatboxes like the Cronus are basically mandatory in some online games now because "everyone" is using them.

I can definitely see why the Xbox is failing now if that is true, but I would say that PC cheating is on another level. One is aim assist and the other is aim botting and being able to see through walls without anyone ever being able to tell what you are doing. I got put in a cage in gta5 online in the official servers. It was funny for while, but then I questioned why I was even playing the game.

I gave up PC gaming back when video cards weren't at insane prices and windows wasn't a dumpster fire (windows 7). Over 600 bucks Canadian (before taxes) for a GeForce 5060ti 16GB, NOPE! Although it's entirely possible I may have a PC in the form of a steam os console or handheld in the future.

This is a stealth, "I don't like today's Xbox news so I'll post about how the competition isn't good enough pretending to always have loved it" thread.

I usually buy some/all of the consoles as well but I'll always have a PC as my primary platform. Problem is there's so little difference nowadays that I may as well just put my old components into a secondary PC on the TV when I upgrade every few years. Cross-saves and Gamepass brought me some use from the Xbox but I've frankly not used my PS5 a whole lot outside of the exclusives.

It also used to be that TVs had much higher image quality than monitors. It's kinda been turned on its head these days when I can buy a 4k 240hz OLED for the same price. Or a 1440p OLED that goes to 500hz and so on.

There are just far more cheaters out there than most people realize.
Where you live might factor into it. I don't play any of the competitive stuff but I can only remember a small handful of instances where I've noticed someone clearly cheating over the past decade. It's definitely not at the point where I'd say there's big difference between PC and console.

You should temper those expectations a bit.
Nah GMG, Key sites and epic provide the best deals in gaming. GMG and key sites sell steam games and valve is fine with their keys being bought elsewhere. That and Steam sales are much better than consoles even if they're worse than GMG etc.

It can be somewhat subtle. Usually, you come away thinking "oh, that guy is just really good." and overtime you abandon online gaming on PC. That's why a lot of great PVP online games on the PC died. A lot of gamers, in certain games, would get the same inkling about cheaters, maybe they aren't quite sure but they eventually stop playing. Once you understand how the cheating systems work on PC and how many people have them you lose all motivation to keep trying.

It might depend on the country. But I've been playing online on PC since 2002 and I've never abandoned a game because of cheaters.

Cheaters were comparatively rampant back in the Day of Defeat/Quake/CS days. But even then I only saw a small handful a month at most and it's nothing like that today.

You do you. Everyone has their preferences.

I was a big console gamer growing up cause we couldn't afford a PC. Then we got one and I lived a life where I had both, and it was awesome.

This was all the way up through the PS3 and 360 days. It honestly wasn't until the XB1 and PS4 era where I was like, "Man, neither are really doing it for me." I mean, there were games here and there, but I was PC gaming more than anything else.

To me the whole thing is about freedom vs. corporate abusiveness / hostility towards the customer.

PC as an open platform will always have ways and methods you as the customer can use to protect yourself from the attempts of corporations like Nintendo to f you over. They can't control your PC, not even Microsoft can and they make Windows lol.

Within the walled garden of a console "ecosystem", you develop Stockholm syndrome. Everythings designed to make you dependent, needy and helpless. That's the state you need to be in for the platform holder to get the most money out of you. The most trivial things are nickle and dimed. The most basic customer rights are being taken away from you if they can get away with it somehow legally. Just look at the "customer service" the big three provide. You don't own the console you bought. You just gave Sony permission to have some digital real estate in your household they can use to squeeze more money out of you.

PS was my main platform before this gen and PC was my second option. After Sony started releasing their games on PC I sold my PS5 and went PC only. I have zero regrets but frankly Sony fumbling their first party output this gen made the transition a lot easier.

Cheating is pretty rampant today on PC. I remember downloading an invisible skin for Quake and messing around on our local school server with friends. That's a far cry from the robust tools they have today. I would suggest the OP do a search on Youtube and look what he's up against before investing into the PC ecosystem. Because of my backlog, modest hardware investment, and age I would never buy a console again, but jumping over to PC when you need to play everything that's current might not be a good idea.

I think PC in open platform only in theory in practice everyone gets games from steam which charges same 30% as playstation.

I think if xbox fails, i don't think i am particularly enthusiastic about gaming anymore. Sony probably starts charging 99 dollars for online gaming then.

MKB advantage in online games, rampant cheating and lacking convenience features like sleep mode downloads and updates make PC gaming just plain shit.

I have an 5080 PC build and I agree with everything OP said but I still let Sony ram their big throbbing schlong up my butthole because I'm a sucker for physical copies of games and I'm not going to pay full price for a digital copy of a video game.

Finances are a personal situation so nobody can comment. As a gamer with a 4080super and a ps5, pc is not what I find acceptable for my lifestyle. Time poor, cash well off.
