As a console gamer my whole life, I think I'm going PC next gen.

You should have got in last year. That was the last year that we knew PC gaming. Now, it's all fucked up. I believe you could put together something far better and for a good price, but it's getting more rare with all the global turmoil fucking with the supply chain, among a plethora of other problems.

After the PS5, i am selling it, and never getting another Sony system. So even though i always wanted to be sony/pc, Sony leaves me no choice. It's like Sony and MS are both telling you to stop buying their shit, and build a pc instead. Ok then.

My only recommendation for your build is to do research, don't be afraid of asking for help, and double check your purchase before you take the plunge. If you are confidant in your skills than you can put it together yourself (frankly it isn't that hard), but if it will be your first time than I recommend finding a relative or friend who has done it before to do it with you. If that is not a option you can always pay somebody or a local IT shop a small fee to assemble it for you. Also, contrary to popular belief, many prebuilds can be decent, so look around for those. Same rules apply, do research etc...

Once you are on PC land it is not all sunshine and roses, couch gaming will be a bit harder, just due to needing a keyboard and mouse for a lot of things, but Steam Big Picture Mode solves a lot of that. You can buy a lite keyboard and mouse combo as well. Once you are actually in a game with your controller and sitting back, the experience isn't that different. Another hiccup is that occasionally something might not work, its not nearly as bad as some make it out to be, and almost everything can be solved with a bit of research. But for most AAA releases these days, everything usually just works.

So, yes it is not straightforward as console gaming, but it has a huge list of benefits and flexibility due to that and the experience can be well worth it. Last tip, never buy a brand new mid to high end GPU at or near release, wait a few months and prices eventually settle.

I went PC a year and a half ago, and it was the best gaming move I've ever made. Seriously a PC + Nintendo combo is all you need. "But but but GTA6!!" yeah just chill. You'll live, and you'll get the best version.

I primarily went pc in 2019. It's been pretty good. Once you get a decent setup it's hard to sometimes go back to the console
Versions. In saying that, sometimes you do just want to sit on a couch with a controller. Which is why it's very important you get a good chair for pc gaming.

I bought a certified refurbished Steam Deck a few months ago and started building an extensive library on Steam. I'll probably build a "budget" Steam OS pc in the next year or so but my PS5 Pro and Steam Deck are keeping me very happy atm.

Cool story, as a lifelong console gamer since the Atari 2600👌
Same here..

But you've never played a PC game? Never modded a game? Never played total conversion modded games? Never played PC specific games?

Yeah, I would consider myself primarily a console gamer, specifically PlayStation. Been with the brand since PS1 pretty much. But I've been thinking about the ps6 lately, and my ps5.

I think I might be ready to ditch consoles and switch to PC next gen.

It's no one thing PlayStation did wrong necessarily. It's just another one of those death by a thousand cuts. But a few things....

1. Paying for online is frankly bullshit.
I bought hell divers 2 on launch on PlayStation and a month of online which cost me 14 Canadian.
So PC players who bought it on steam and Sony got 70% of that vs me who bought it on console and gave 100%, I also have to pay an extra fee to play it?
Man fuck you lol

Now a year later I want to go back and pick it up again, but of course online got jacked up another $2 to $16. So pay up.

And for what? To play your first party game?

Nahh man. I'm done being a sucker.

2. Sony porting their Games to PC.
SIngle player is about 75% of my game time, and the primary reason I stuck with console.
But it seems like EVERYTHING goes to steam and epic. PlayStation games, Xbox games, indie games, switch exclusive games. If you are a PC player, you pretty much get everything.

3. Demos. I love demos man. So I always get jealous when steam has these steam next fest events. I always feel like I'm missing out on some big gaming event. PlayStation doesn't have anything for me except a middle finger.

4. Folders. Why I gotta deal with this EVERY generation.

5. Huge deals. I regularly see these big triple a games going for like $5. On console, $20 is a deal.

6. Steam= free cloud saves
Consoles= take a guess

Anyways, just been thinking about this lately. Adding up all the pros vs cons, and it just seems like a no brainer. Yeah the upfront cost can be huge. 100%. Probably double or triple the price of a console, but I feel like the experience is much better.

I don't plan on buying a pc until the ps6 is out, but the fact that I'm even considering switching to PC is fucking bizarre for me. But it feels kinda good.
I'm already scouting PC parts right now lol.

Anyone else make the jump like I'm going to do?

For me Switch/SW2 fill that void. If I'm not in the mood for PC, I can just relax and play portable.

All completely logical and factual points.

The last straw for me was cloud saves. Its ridiculous that Sony and Nintendo lock these behind a subscription.

I can relate, also a lot of great indies don't get console releases.

If a new Steambox is released by then (probably not...) , or steamOS certified CPUs/GPUs, I'll definitely consider switching to pc too.

I've been giving it serious consideration given how much of a let down this gen has been and given how far emulation has come recently (Bloodborne on PC at 60fps with mods? Say what?). But I'm still seriously questioning the up front cost and stress of understanding how to build a gaming PC and also dealing with individual settings and drivers for individual games. My game time is limited as a new dad, so when I have game time, I like being able to just start up a game and play it. No mess, no fuss. Console convenience is a very important benefit to me.

Stick with it then.

That's a great reason for getting a PC. The huge wunderkind indies like Schedule 1, R.E.P.O & the recent Peak always happen first on PC and even they might not make the jump to consoles.
Fingers crossed Valve or even MS release a decent console form factor PC/"Xbox".

I did in past when UT2003, Quake 3 and Guild Wars 1 was a thing. Now i am old and just want to start a game and play.
A decent Computer with quality parts are at the very least 1500eu, not worth it for me.

I grew up pc. I have a gaming pc. I feel like it's mostly not worth it at all anymore. Sales aren't as deep, it's much more fiddly / annoying, hardware is very expensive, windows sucks ass - yes Linux is viable mostly, but we're still not steam deck steam os easy yet.

It's still good, for sure.

No.
I gamed on PC for almost 15 years. I'm never going back to that. The reason why are pretty much endless. But if you want to give it a shot, go for it.

Of course I've played on PC... we'll leave it at that lest I trigger the fragile PC nerds lol. One thing you PC dudes need to understand, we don't give a flying fuck about "modding" and all that other shit but you enjoy 😆
I mean, some mods are literally entire new games. Like, someone took DOOM and made a sonic-themed kart racing game with +200 tracks/arenas - Mario Kart 8 has around 100 with all DLC for comparison.

Once again, I don't give a flying fuck lol. I buy and play shit ton of games and there still aren't enough hours in a day to play everything I want to play as is, nevermind dividing that time between numerous other hobbies I have. The one and only appeal of mods is stuff like releasing texture packs to "fix" the devs incompetence in specific cases 👍

Going to PC was the smartest decision of my life. I get everything Xbox, I get everything PlayStation and I get everything everyone else other than Nintendo who just recycled the same four games over and over again. All of this happens without being bent over by corporate greed and a locked down ecosystem that does everything they can to nickel and dime you because the console space is slowly dying.

Oh no, I need to wait 12 months to play the best version of GTA6! My backlog is so big with definitive edition of games like The Last of Us 2 and Stellar Blade on PC that it doesn't even matter.

As a console gamer since I was 10 and a Atari's console , since then having every console that has come out, I didn't get a ps5 pro but got a switch 2 but won't be buying any newer consoles going forward will stick to retro gaming and pc and consoles I got, ps5 and Xbox x has shown me I've grown out of the market that PlayStation and Microsoft want to go

Spoken like a man that has never basked in the glory of the Complex mod for Homeworld 1+2

Brutal Doom

Or Misery for Stalker

Or the Battlefield Desert Combat mod

Forgotten Hope!

You're a damn fool man!

why are you guys so dramatic? i'm primarily a pc gamer my whole life but i've also bought consoles... well, mostly nintendo handhelds

I would like to do the same. I built a PC last year and it's been great but I keep having a mental roadblock in my head when it comes to playing with a controller. I default back to PS5/Xbox SX for all of those games. I just got a Steam Deck and it feels weird to use lol

What am I missing? Is it really that easy to connect a controller and start playing? Do you have to pair the controller to Steam or to each game, each time you launch the game. I love the ease of just grabbing the controller and jumping in with a console, not sure if the same can be done with a PC.

If your patient sure. Alot of people (me) cant wait 6months to a year to play the next big game
Of course you can. Nobody sitting there with a gun to your head, forcing you.
You just don't want to.

(also, blink twice if someone is sitting there with a gun to your head)

I did the same jump a few years ago.
Some PC hardware is expensive right now, but my advice is too plan your upgraded accordingly.
Get a great CPU that'll last a long time and a GPU that might last 2 gens for 1440p and you're good (5070ti or 9070XT are nice choices).

I ditched console gaming for good after I bought a ps4 pro to play rdr2

The framerate was so bad I ditched it after 90 mins and gave the console away.

30fps on console != 30fps on PC
Not how things work. If the frame pacing is the same than 30fps = 30fps.

But I'm still seriously questioning the up front cost and stress of understanding how to build a gaming PC and also dealing with individual settings and drivers for individual games.
The up front cost can be almost whatever you want it to be, you don't deal with drivers for individual games, just in-game settings.

Now i am old and just want to start a game and play.
Me too, so I just do that 99% of the time on PC too.

The Xbox 360/One/Series is plug and play for every game that supports controllers. Other controllers might need their own drivers/setup to work. There is no suck thing as setup for each game or each time you launch a game. Once the controller is installed, every game with controller support will work.

I might depend on the controller but, once it's connected to the PC, all games should "just work" and you don't need to do anything for any specific game.

For example:
Xbox controller, once it's paired to the PC it just works.
The Dualshock, I remember using this software to make it work nicely. But nothing too complicated, just make sure the program is running and the gamepad will just work.

I've been considering this move for many years and each time people managed to talk me out of it. There are down sides to PC as well.

Just get a gaming laptop. Worst comes to worst, it has other uses or you can re-sell it more easily
