If it was only Celestia and Luna vs Discord, wouldn't they both have to be 3 elements each? (One for the Earth, Pegasus, and Unicorn parts that make them up?)

My theory is that each of the six elements is a positive magic type, and can be used against dark magic to a limited degree. Different ponies have different types of magic inside them.

Some wizard pony in the distant past found a way to turn stones into powerful sources of magic (I'm guessing they're not just containers, they actually generate), and made one of each type. This way any pony (assuming they know how) can wield all six types of positive magic, and mix and match them to create even greater harmony-type magic, without the need to be born with even one of them.

So when Celestia and Luna tried to fight Discord, they could have taken the element stones and divided them up 3-each, which would have given each of them quadruple-magic (assuming they took elements which were against their own type) with a significant degree of harmony, but turning Discord to stone required full six-element harmony, so Celestia and Luna probably needed to team up on one shot.

After Luna powered up with dark magic and became Nightmare Moon, Celestia took up all six elements and used harmony magic against her, which defeated her evil power, but getting beaten only amplified Luna's grudge against Celestia, giving her an evil recharge, so Celestia imprisoned Nightmare Moon.

Celestia hid the Friendship/Magic element, apparently so only someone like Twilight would be able to use them.

Twilight found and almost made the five elements work despite not knowing how, but then Nightmare Moon broke them, knowing that positive magic was harmful to her evil power, and useless for her to use against her enemies.

But the mane cast were living sources of the element magics, so even the broken fragments were useful to them as easy conduits for their own power. Twilight transformed the fragments into magic necklaces.

Twilight's element became a big crown thingy because her element stone was unbroken. In theory, anyone who wears Twilight's crown should temporarily become a capable wielder of Friendship/Magic-type positive magic.

Twilight's first attempt to fight Discord didn't work because Spike doesn't have any loyalty-element magic in him.

In Twilight's second attempt to fight Discord, she made a protective bubble to save her friends, and it fixed part of the ground because it was Friendship-based.

I still don't like the fact that the actual necklaces and big crown thingy can just be taken away and hidden.

I feel like they should just be able to form when the 6 demonstrate their elements, overcome a hardship, learn a lesson, feel their friendship, etc.

Twilight says that they are the "spirits of the elements of harmony", so it's kinda lame that they can be depowered by taking away their jewelry. Especially when they were able to make the elements reform after being destroyed.

But, this could still be the case, as the group found the jewelry before they overcame the hardship and felt their friendship again. I'd like to think that if they didn't have the "elements" but still became friends again, the elements would just physically reform on them.

Of course, making them need to get the actual objects allows the writers to avoid simply having the group rainbow beam every monster they encounter/have the plot hole of why they didn't.

I think it works well with the elements being something inside of them that they don't have easy access to, but that the necklaces are tools to make it easier. And with Twilight being the closest one (not counting Celestia/Luna) to being able to summon that kind of power without the help of a tool.

I'd also like to see Applejack casually wearing her necklace in a non-adventure episode and trying her hand at doing some magic.

And I'd like to see the CMC borrowing the necklaces to try and see which elements they have.

Just tuned in and Luna just shot from being a little above a background pony to me all the way up to one of the best things ever on the show.

I hate CMC, but see, CMC is a group. Notice how when left alone, the young characters are actually likeable?

Save the chicken of course. That cocksucker has yet to display anything redeemable other than being an annoying loudmouth who pushes people around. But this is the fanbase that like to make shitty fanon out of stuff like Trixie, so yeah.

Random little detail I just noticed in the Halloween ep.

After Luna first retreated from the crowd and Twilight followed her, Luna went to the Nightmare Moon statue and was looking sad and holding her head low and offering a piece of candy to the statue. Then when Twilight came up from behind and said hello, Luna was briefly startled (because she thought she was alone, in more ways than one), and then looked angrily up at the face of the statue.

That seems like kind of... ummm... dangerous behavior. I think if Twilight hadn't reached out to Luna at that moment, she might have willingly started down the path of evil again.

And then Luna says she knows full well who Twilight is, and Twilight asks if she's okay with having been defeated, and Luna responds "But of course. We could not be happier. Is that not clear!?"

No, it's not clear. But Luna would prefer that you shut up about the Nightmare Moon incident and quit offering to help.

The reason I think her happiness is unclear is because Luna Mays is yelling, thereby giving off the impression that she is anything but happy. But it's just her royal Canterlot voice.

I think Luna was genuinely depressed, but not about to turn back to being Nightmare Moon. She was just sad, and as Twilight approached and called her, Luna decided she didn't want Twilight to see her like that, and reverted to her previous, regal façade. Her looking at Nightmare Moon's statue was just done as a pretext for being at that place that symbolized the image everypony had of her.

Luna only started opening her heart once she saw who she was speaking to, and what were Twilight's intentions.

Just watched the Luna episode. Pretty good, but probably the weakest of the four episodes of this season so far. Luna's new design is much better and makes more sense than her original appearance.

Not that I'm aware of. It's a commuter campus, though. And I'm in the masters program, not undergrad so beats the hell out of me.
