There can still be a decent in-universe explanation, even if Ms. Faust didn't want to have to broach the subject in the first place. I mean, she's not had a whole lot of control over Season 2, beyond basic episode concepts, right? And it's turned out okay, right? (Barring some episodes being aired out of order, one episode being pulled from iTunes, and "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" in general - not like anyone at Studio B had any control over the former two.) This should turn out okay, too.

The show's still been good, but I don't think there's any denying that coherent world-building has taken a step back from S1, and it probably has to do with Faust's departure.

The first step is concepts, where the writers brainstorm and decide who gets to write what episode about what subject. Faust was in charge of this for season 2 same as season 1.

After the episodes are written, the scripts come in for final approval, or they get sent back to make changes or whatever. Faust was in charge of about half of this for season 2.

After that comes storyboards and voice acting and animation. Faust was in charge of these things for S1 (and Return of Harmony 1&2 because they were made with S1), but not S2.


The lack of world building is because it's season 2, not because Faust left.

Hearth's Warming Eve doesn't invalidate anything. Discord and/or the Alicorns could have simply appeared afterwards.

It seems like lack of elaborating on the specifics you wanted, and building the world differently from how you expected, is what's at play here.

Spike: Clean up winter? Who cleans up winter? Don't they just use magic to change the seasons like they do in Canterlot?
Twilight Sparkle: No Spike, Ponyville was started by Earth ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter. It's traditional.

Honestly, I don't care that much about it. The episodes are fun, and the contradictions are fairly minor (as said, the alicorns/Discord probably showed up later, and who knows, maybe ponies can live for several centuries in this universe - no skin off my back, honestly). Still, analyzing contradictions can be fun, sometimes.
