My wild arms 4 review

Wow. This game just screams..crap. Awestruck by its crappiness. I played many different RPGs, (FFs, Fallout, Suikodens, DQs), and I never seen a game more cliche and pathetic.
Little boy wonder who discovers awesome powers?
Wow lolers. Thats really lame. Standard graphics, but quite outdated considering the Japanese release was March 2005. The spells are kinda dull. The story is absolutely hideous; don't even want to talk about it. I can't believe people consider this game any good at all. The only game that will deliver will be FF12.

If you don't trust me, by all means, buy the game. It got scores that I consider way too forgiving.

The game is just freaking wrong.

Isn't it Kawazu now?

Kawazu produces EVERYTHING at Square. He doesn't have much input on FFXII if any at all. He just puts money in and gets incredibly rich on the returns.

I don't even have to wait to know FF12 > WA4.

Really? Judging by that demo with DQ8, I certainly hope Square scrapped the entire game and started over, because if I want bad mmo-style combat, I'll play Everquest. And if I want trannies, I'll go for Magna Carta.

Wild Arms 4 gets a "satisfactory" rating from Drinky Crow Media Ltd.

Poster "mint" disagrees with the GAF orthodoxy as represented by my opinions and is therefore marked for public censure and ridicule.

It's Hiroyuki Ito, Hiroshi Minagawa now.

With 100% script by Matsuno and battle system/town/world/overall game design by Matsuno (since they just took what he had done for 2 years and continued with his consent).

Matsuno might not be directing the entire project, but it's definitely a Matsuno game.

WHY DO YOU HATE FREEDOM?

More like Matsuno fans...which isn't a bad thing to be.

Even as a fan (acolyte, worshipper, whatever) of his, I still want the other stuff. :)

And about the WA4; what is about this game that gets normal RPG fans hating it SO bad? Boring ain't broken, unless it really IS that cliche...

gg.

Satelliteoflove: RPG has been a favorite genre. But, it may be better for all of ya to discover the truth yourselves. Buy the game. Play the freaking game.

Personally, I really like WA4 from a mechanical perspective: I like the Klonoa-esque 2.5D platforming dungeons and map routes, and I like the new hex-based battle system a LOT. The splash effects for cinematic dialogue are cute and very manga-esque, and the full-screen portraits look nice. Difficulty scales well.

Minuses are the dated graphics (weak textures, low poly count) and largely unpleasant stereotypical anime characters. The plot seems more like a Grandia than a Wild Arms title, which is a little weird and not necessarily welcome. Overall, the plot and characters are eminently forgettable, but it's still light-years better than some of the pap you anime fruits praise like Tales of Symphonia and Magna Carta.

Like I said, it gets a "satisfactory" score. It won't bring the house down, but as a B-list diversion, it's more than adequate.

Yeah I'm definitely getting a Grandia feel as opposed to the WA feel from the plot. I personally enjoy the plot and the characters, but the platforming and the battle system are ace. Although some of the areas will have you bashing your head against the wall, at least when they throw a precision puzzle at you, they usually leave out the monsters:P 17 hours in,
Just passed the sand cruiser and Jude's mom's death
. Very good times, and moves quickly enough to really keep one motivated.

Oh and for the record, Filgaia's archtitects were absolute madmen. I think Rube Goldberg was one of their founding fathers.

I'm pretty surprised at this, I figured if anyone would have the sense to be down on the game mechanically, it'd be you. It's only about 5 hours in that you get not one, but two auto-win attacks: once you get the 25 FP starting bonus, and Yulie's "start first in every battle" ability, if she happens to land on one of the elemental tiles on the field then that's that, and if she doesn't, you just move her to one and you win on your second turn. Likewise, Raquel hits so hard that she can kill just about anything in one shot, so once you've got her "walk + hit" ability, by the time her turn comes up you've always got enough FP to roam the entire battlefield in one turn, laying waste as you go.

The hex system isn't a terrible idea, and the bosses usually make great use of it with their special tricks. But the combat is so unbalanced (full heals after every fight?) that the males in your party are practically useless, while the females are grossly overpowered. That doesn't equal good mechanics to me.

So they've managed to come up with something even more broken than "Valiant at start of fight, let your party members get beat down to 10< HP, win," then? O boy

The 25 FP ----> Guardian ability only works sporadically, not very consistent, considering the elemental weakness of all the different mobs you'll encounter. Since they don't really increase your HP as much as most RPGs do as you level, the monsters start hitting even harder as the game progresses, forcing you to use a bit more strategy in who you attack and when. Raquel kills a ton of random baddies in 1 hit, it just takes FOREVER for her to actually get a turn. I haven't really seen much imbalance in the combat as of yet, it actually gets more challenging later on.

I dunno, I did finish the game, and I didn't really see it. The above strategy worked for me just about every time, even when it did need a mop-up hit or two from Jude after the Guardian blast.

All Wild ARMs games are easy to "exploit" to win battles with relative ease

Especially the dupe trick with Wild ARMs 1 :D

Does the dupe trick work in Alter Code F?

I couldn't get it to work:( No Apply goodness

Who throws away games? Even a piece of shit like FX-2, I still sold back to Blockbuster.

Mint, just admit you played the game at a friends house.

I played FFX, DQ8, Dark Cloud 2, KH, Rhapsodia, WA4, Tales of Abyss..hated them all.

Have you played Digital Devil Saga? I liked that. You might not though, it sorta plays like FFX...sorta.

Not really.

mint tried DQ8 but gave up due to not having a perfect Battle Record (which AFAIK is impossible, because the 'fight' with those 2 kids in the 2nd town counts as a non-victory battle anyway).

Lol? Square fans? Tell me which of those games you don't like. those square games were solid. i didn't play the prior suikodens, and i prolly won't.
