"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

I unplugged my 360 to spray the innards with compressed air. After I plugged it back in, I was greeted with RROD, but I tried to replug it in and it works fine for now. I was wondering if it is on the way out or if it was a fluke. Just for good measure, my 360 is a Falcon manufactured 11/13/2007.

damn, are they really that sensitive?

You can make a 360 RRoD by pulling the power cable out even after you've turned it off. (obviously the RRoD shows when you start it back up)

It's temporary... but yeah, they can be that sensitive. :lol

To Archie, sounds like a one time fluke. Did you plug everything back tightly the first time?
I'm assuming my power cable was loose. I was reading around online, and that can cause the 3 red lights to flash, but it isn't necessarily RROD. It's worked fine after I replugged everything in.

That's good to know. The newer falcon power bricks connecting to the main console the plugs are plastic now instead of metal, I guess just have to make sure that it's tightly plugged in.

I got my 360 on Launch Day (PAL).

It survived about 7 months, then RRoD'd. I got a repair on my unit, which died again roughly three months after that. I asked for a replacement unit, which arrived, but has been one problem after another since. The power button... doesn't work. Have to turn it on via remote/controller, it scratches discs to hellaroo, often not actually reading new games at all, and sometimes it just won't accept the USB ports.

Aside from that I'm happy :-p

so my 360 is dying i think... the colors on the screen are turning all green and red everywhere and i cant make it stop. red ring incoming? im not sure what the symptoms are.
Oh whoopie, I have the same problem! It started yesterday while playing Rock Band. Dammit.

I guess I'll have to make the trek to Costco and get my 360 replaced. What a pain.

I just received my 4th 360 from MS today and it's brand new manufacture date of 6/26/08. So at least they sent me a new unit, but they didn't include the damn power supply? WTF? Has anyone else had this problem? I called customer support and the guy told me they send the power supply sometimes two days later? Has anyone else ever heard this BS and is this standard for MS now? I got one month of free live gold for my troubles...whoopeee!

Wow. So they are actually starting to replace old units with Falcons?

Dates on the consoles don't always indicate manufacture dates. They can also be the date of refurb. If you send a HDMI console in for repair (Zephyr) you'd be unlucky not to get a falcon replacement though.

They'll never replace non HDMI with HDMI... simply because they'll be overrun with smothered 360s. :lol

Yeah, I wasn't lucky enough to get an HDMI unit so it must be the refurb date. The thing looks new though, but it must not be. Now I just need my damn power supply!

My DVD drive doesn't work. It makes this horrible noises and can't read any discs. I called Microsoft and it will cost 100 bucks to get it fixed. Is there any way to make the thing red-ring so I can get it fixed for free?

That shit didn't work at all. I think I am hosed. I have my Xbox running with towels rapped around it, but it is taking forever.

I got my unit back today, but didn't get the chance to open it until this evening. In the five weeks absence, I purchased another xbox(had the RROD on it about a week ago, but it's working fine...for now).

I got a unit that was manufactored on October 28, 2005. Great. Since I had already made my mind up to sell this box, I hooked it just to make sure it worked. I popped in Halo3, the game asked for an update(I hadn't hooked the wireless adapter up to the system), I hit yes.

The game restarts after installing the update and I get a fuzzy, distored screen....no colors...all grey. I could almost make out the title screen for Halo. Restarted the box, things booted up like normal, and I played single player for 30 minutes.

I don't think this refurb is going to make it too long. I've made a promise to myself already; when my newer system kicks the bucket, I'm going PS3.

The Update:

My refurb xbox was given to a friend at work. It's still working for him as of today so good for him. The 360 I purchased in the interim is now dead. I had barely used it..it was more of a dvd player than anything at this point. Maybe two or three hours a week it would get use. That still was enough to kill him dead.

Manufact date of June 30, 2007. Once I get this unit back from Microsoft I'm done. I'm putting the NEW refurb box up on ebay/craiglist as soon as I get it back; I'm going to be a PS3 only guy the rest of this generation.

If you're looking at the pic, doesn't the right side of the system need space when horizontal? My wife moved one of my 360's over and pushed that side up against our entertainment center (twice now). The thing overheated in a matter of minutes. You don't have any way to get it vertical or out of that area so it can have SOME air flow?

Honestly, I haven't even used the system to play games since around February. Like I said, it was a glorified dvd player...even then it was mainly used to play video streamed from my laptop. Couldn't have been too taxing on the guts. Also, it had only been in that enclosure for around a week and hadn't been used until I turned it on today.

You mean the side that allows you to tilt your 360 vertically? There's no vents there.

Hmm.... looks like it can pull quite a bit of air from over there, no? When vertical, you get open air flow from both side vents...

There's definitely air flow through there...

It's kind of sad, I think, but I wouldn't dream of putting a next-gen console (maybe the Wii) in an enclosed space. I had a PS3 in my entertainment unit for a while, and while playing games, it hit the "I'm at least as loud as a 360" fan level, even though it had decent clearance on all sides (and the space it was in was a large space, not enclosed at front or back)... when it wasn't there, it was pretty much whisper quiet. (For the record, I wouldn't even attempt to put my 360 in the same space.)

I understand heat is an issue as tech gets faster, but it's just unfortunate that it's such an issue in this generation...

You pretty much already are anyway.

I called MS after my 360 arrived with no power supply and the customer service rep told me the power supply would arrive 2 days after the console arrived. Why? So I called again today and talked to some guy who didn't have a clue and he told me my power supply would arrive a week after the console. Alright, so I ask to talk to a manager so after 10 minutes of holding I get one and he promises me overnight shipping of a power supply from Fedex or UPS. He said hopefully it would be ready to ship tomorrow which means I should have it by Friday. If I don't have it by Friday fuck MS and fuck the 360, this is my 4th damn unit and I'm getting sick of dealing with them screwing everything up.

Got mine, new, in June 2006, died June 2008, almost two years later to the exact day. Game froze, wasn't worried since it wasn't like that had never happened before, turned the console off and on again, RRoD. Seemed to have a new, quieter DVD drive when I got it back (definitely the same console). I had disc read errors every now and then before I sent it in and haven't had a single one since.

Clearly you are covering the main left vents?

The_Dude, cool so you got a new disc drive? My Xbox 360 sometimes get DREs but it's only in games heavy on streaming. I've only got it with Mass Effect and Oblivion but only once per play session. It's like the driver is warming up or something because it work flawlessy after a DRE :lol

You can't put it in enclosures like that. It even says in the manual that it needs ventialtion/open space.

Wood is an insulator too, right? That's horrible.

Holy crap you're completely blocking the air vents! No wonder it red rings...

so is it still a crapshoot as far as buying a new 360? will the 60GB version be a different cpu/gpu tech? i really like what's available on the XBL Arcade so i am leaning toward a 360, but reading this thread is telling me to stay away. is PS3 any better as far as hardware failure is concerned? my brother's PS3's drive just died after renting a game.

He pretty much towel-tricked it.

I've got a Falcon sitting in an Ikea Benno stand, which is about as wide open as it gets. I still had to play around with where to put it, as having anything within a few inches of the side / bottom vent made the entire back of the 360 warm to the touch.

How these things survive standing up is beyond me. I know there are little feet that keep the vent a couple of mm of the surface, but from what I've seen that's not nearly enough.

That is a big N-O.

As of right now the 360 and the PS3 are equally reliable.

It's Friday and I still haven't received my power supply! My 360 came on Tuesday, but for some reason I still don't have a power supply. So I called again today with a reference number and I get some rep who proceeds to tell me that my power supply will arrive in 5-7 business days? He says this is what his supervisor told him, well what about the supervisor I talked to Wednesday? What happened to my overnight shipping since this is my 4th 360 and you guys forgot to include the power supply. Seriously MS, are you trying to turn away customers with the worst customer service in history? So my power supply is going to arrive 2 weeks after my console?

What a crock of shit! MS, you've officially lost me as a customer. I'm selling my 360 if my power supply actually ever gets here.

Just got my replacement Elite. Its a different system, looks new but maybe its just clean ha, says the manufacture date is 6/28/08, has the quieter dvd drive thank god, but the system still is loud as fuck in the dashboard.

Ah well back to halo! I'll give ms props on the speedy fix, and the free 1month of live.

i got my hdmi premium back (well a new console) and it has two fans in the back which i don't remember being on my first one. Do all falcons have this?

Well system #3 just kicked it, constant freezing, it was a refurb with a June 2006 manufacture date which I received a few months back. Who knows, maybe I'l get lucky and get a refurbed 2007 model this time :lol

Yes, the side closest to the 3RR's have ventilation holes there. Putting it in a cabinet with that little airflow (on that side) is somewhere south of beneficial IMO.

What a bunch of incompetent retards. You get hold of anyone about it to see what bullshit excuse they give you now?

Care to post to any evidence that proves otherwise?

So I got my 360 back (I'm pretty sure it was the same as my original one cause I'm not having any DRM issues) but it seems they've changed my DVD drive again.

Sounds/feels very.. flimsy.

Is this a normal thing?

Yes, yesterday my PS3 had a dead mechanism for the slot drives until I somehow fixed it.

It destroyed what "bulletproof" illusions the console gave.

So I can say that they are equally as reliable/or as unreliable as each other.

Keeping it limited to NeoGAF, I see just as many mentions of PS3s going tits up as I do Falcon 360s. If you look at the failed Falcon reports closely, you'll see a lot of people that think that simply because they have an Elite, Halo, or HDMI Premium that it's a Falcon, when in fact a lot of them are Zephyrs.

I say that as someone with no real dog in the fight - I've got a Falcon 360, but I coughed up for the two-year Best Buy replacement plan anyway. Frankly, my launch Wii scares me more - it's locked up multiple times and it sometimes gets stuck in transitions between channels.

My 360 (pre-launch system) died towards the end of May. I'm only just now posting about it though (forgot about this thread). I think mine was one of the longest lasting systems. Does anyone else still have a launch unit out there?

I received a refurb from MS in June with a date of manufacture of 10/xx/05. :(

Launch unit still going strong.

Those saying the PS3 doesn't die, are ignoring the large number of "DRE" systems that are returned to stores. You'll find just as many "DRE" and "No video" PS3 store return systems being sold on Ebay as 360 store returns.

Funny enough, both the PS3 and 360 are easily fixable with the right know-how.
