You can make a 360 RRoD by pulling the power cable out even after you've turned it off. (obviously the RRoD shows when you start it back up)dreamer3kx said:

I got my 360 on Launch Day (PAL).
It survived about 7 months, then RRoD'd. I got a repair on my unit, which died again roughly three months after that. I asked for a replacement unit, which arrived, but has been one problem after another since. The power button... doesn't work. Have to turn it on via remote/controller, it scratches discs to hellaroo, often not actually reading new games at all, and sometimes it just won't accept the USB ports.
Aside from that I'm happy

I just received my 4th 360 from MS today and it's brand new manufacture date of 6/26/08. So at least they sent me a new unit, but they didn't include the damn power supply? WTF? Has anyone else had this problem? I called customer support and the guy told me they send the power supply sometimes two days later? Has anyone else ever heard this BS and is this standard for MS now? I got one month of free live gold for my troubles...whoopeee!

Dates on the consoles don't always indicate manufacture dates. They can also be the date of refurb. If you send a HDMI console in for repair (Zephyr) you'd be unlucky not to get a falcon replacement though.AlphaTwo00 said:

If you're looking at the pic, doesn't the right side of the system need space when horizontal? My wife moved one of my 360's over and pushed that side up against our entertainment center (twice now). The thing overheated in a matter of minutes. You don't have any way to get it vertical or out of that area so it can have SOME air flow?

It's kind of sad, I think, but I wouldn't dream of putting a next-gen console (maybe the Wii) in an enclosed space. I had a PS3 in my entertainment unit for a while, and while playing games, it hit the "I'm at least as loud as a 360" fan level, even though it had decent clearance on all sides (and the space it was in was a large space, not enclosed at front or back)... when it wasn't there, it was pretty much whisper quiet. (For the record, I wouldn't even attempt to put my 360 in the same space.)
I understand heat is an issue as tech gets faster, but it's just unfortunate that it's such an issue in this generation...

I called MS after my 360 arrived with no power supply and the customer service rep told me the power supply would arrive 2 days after the console arrived. Why? So I called again today and talked to some guy who didn't have a clue and he told me my power supply would arrive a week after the console. Got mine, new, in June 2006, died June 2008, almost two years later to the exact day. Game froze, wasn't worried since it wasn't like that had never happened before, turned the console off and on again, RRoD. Seemed to have a new, quieter DVD drive when I got it back (definitely the same console). I had disc read errors every now and then before I sent it in and haven't had a single one since.

The_Dude, cool so you got a new disc drive? My Xbox 360 sometimes get DREs but it's only in games heavy on streaming. I've only got it with Mass Effect and Oblivion but only once per play session. It's like the driver is warming up or something because it work flawlessy after a DRE :lol

so is it still a crapshoot as far as buying a new 360? will the 60GB version be a different cpu/gpu tech? i really like what's available on the XBL Arcade so i am leaning toward a 360, but reading this thread is telling me to stay away. is PS3 any better as far as hardware failure is concerned? my brother's PS3's drive just died after renting a game.

I've got a Falcon sitting in an Ikea Benno stand, which is about as wide open as it gets. I still had to play around with where to put it, as having anything within a few inches of the side / bottom vent made the entire back of the 360 warm to the touch.
How these things survive standing up is beyond me. I know there are little feet that keep the vent a couple of mm of the surface, but from what I've seen that's not nearly enough.

Just got my replacement Elite. Its a different system, looks new but maybe its just clean ha, says the manufacture date is 6/28/08, has the quieter dvd drive thank god, but the system still is loud as fuck in the dashboard.

Those saying the PS3 doesn't die, are ignoring the large number of "DRE" systems that are returned to stores. You'll find just as many "DRE" and "No video" PS3 store return systems being sold on Ebay as 360 store returns.
