"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

My 360 has vanished. It left the center on Sept 3rd, and only has a tracking info notice up to date from Sept 5th. It says delivery will happen on Sept 11th. What the heck? This sucks :|

anyone consider the Lian Li XBOX 360 case? does it prevent the RROD problem due to better air flow?

i wonder how it would be to open up the current 360, take the insides out and install them in the Lian-Li.....which btw i'm assuming stands vertically only like a PC case. I hope it's not noisier than the current 360 since it's got holes and vents all over.

has anyone tries this thing or ever seen it? a white one would look hot!

I wouldn't worry too much. Consoles typically don't move much over the weekend when shipping via UPS. It should hit another routing center soon enough. I would definitely call in to Xbox Support if you do not see any updates on your waybill or have your newly exchanged console by the end of business on Thursday.

wow same here, a little different situation, a friend shipped the 360 to me on the 3rd and I only have tracking info until the 5th, nothing updated since that date. The 360 is only coming from PA too and Im in NYC, sheesh! I hate USPS.

sorry this is not on the RROD topic.

so I got Battle Fantasia today with transformers on HD-DVD. Tales of Vesperia will arrive tomorrow. Fifa 09 demo out on Thursday and what happens. 3 Red Lights!! Pissed!!! Was playing Battle Fantasia and it crashed twice. Turned 360 back on and bang 3 red lights appear.

2nd time my Asian 360 has broke down. only had it for 18 months! My friend has had the original xbox since first month of release and he has never had any problems..

Gonna try and fix it myself first before I send it to a repair shop. Gonna try this http://www.cd24-7.co.uk/shop.php?sec=prod&prod=53

These guys fixed my last machine within 2 days and are a good shop. If I cant do it myself then will send it back to them.

Once Play-Asia stock the new low priced Japanese Arcade 360's I am gonna buy one.

My 6th console has just died, via RROD. Help me GAF; what is the best way to deal with this? ALL I WANT IS A BRAND NEW CONSOLE, AND NOT A REFURBISHED PIECE OF CRAP!

I'm on hold waiting to talk to a supervisor right now. All I want is a new console. Seriously. That's IT. Well, that and also don't want it to break again.

Sad to hear that. On the plus side, 7 is a lucky number.

I think I posted back in April (?) about my warranty not getting honored; it still hasn't. The "billing department" has had a credit card statement clearly detailing the name and amount of the warranty charge for about 4 months, but are still "working" on getting it tied to our 360 account. The nice Supervisor still calls or emails me about once a week to let me know they're still working on it, but Jesus Christ. It's the disc drive dying, so forcing a RROD and sending it in won't get it fixed. I finally had to buy a new system a couple weeks ago, bought an arcade and slapped the HDD in, and I'm going to get the $80 back from the price drop through CC's 30-day price match.

Given the insane amount of play the system's gotten I'm not real angry about having to buy a new one itself, but just more offended that we're about 5 to 6 months into this with clear documentation and they can't get it fixed. There's absolutely no way I'm buying the next MS system within a couple years of launch, and I've spent a lot on money and time on the 360 and games.

I feel the same way. No way in hell I'm going to buy another M$ system, at least not until I know the system won't break on me SIX GODDAMN TIMES IN LESS THAN THREE YEARS.

Edit - I've been on hold for 35 minutes. I'm hanging up and calling again.

Edit 2 - So, wait time is still half an hour. I want to break something. Fuck this.

11/7/2005 mfg date NTSC-J system died today :/

Does anyone know if MS-USA deals with foreign systems or will they just send a refurbed US system back? :/

Hope it goes well for you. i was told by the rep I would be getting a new one after he saw this was my 4th repair. The coffin was overnighted to me. The prepaid shipping label was also overnight via FedEx. I'll update on whether or not I get a new one.

Last time this happened they said they couldn't overnight it to me, and I'd be treated just like any other customer, which at this point is bullshit. I'm on hold to speak with a supervisor again. Here's hoping it goes well.

Edit - He's telling me to keep it away from all electrical devices, TV, PS3... WTF does that have to do with anything? He said he's going to "try his best" to get me a new console, and that it's up to "the repair center." I'm not sure I'm buying this.

This is the biggest problem with the 360 thus far. The refurb models keep perpetuating the notion that the 360 is unreliable. After 3 repairs the customer should get a brand new unit and the 3 carcasses should be buried in Area51 or sent off to outer space with the rest of the junk we can't bury.

I agree completely. The representative guaranteed me that "my console would not break again." Sureeeee you can. He told me that he'd send me a coffin and get in touch with the service center to see about getting me a new console. I don't think it's gonna happen.

My biggest problem is the fact that I have invested thousands of dollars into this machine over the past three years, I've had six consoles break on me, and I'm still being treated almost like any other case. All my friends are on 360's. But at this point, I'd much rather buy my games for my "Refurbished" 60 gig PS3 that I got at Gamestop, because at least I know that thing won't break on me every six months.

Got an E-74 error the other day. Scared me since it was a 3/4 red ring. Turned it on 5 minutes later and it worked. ELITE bought in May. Scary since I know that issues are still rampant but expect better.

3 red lights is what the RRoD is. 4 red lights means your video cable isn't plugged in or is messed up.

I remember standing in line on launch day at my local B&M store and talking to the guy in front of me. He said "you're not going to buy the overpriced replacement warranty are you? they're a waste of money you know."
Well it cost me $85 extra but I've replaced my console new when it failed. It's paid off in spades considering I never had to put up with the Microsoft replacement refurbishment circle jerk.

To be honest I'd get them to repair the model, buy a new Arcade in the meantime and then sell that POS repaired model. Yeah it will cost you a little but the new models are SO much more reliable than the endless repaired junk they send.

WTF? Keep your video game console away from the TV? How is that even remotely possible?

Mine is supposed to get back the 12th (and like DotCal, the UPS info never updates). I've almost bought an Elite three times while my broken one was gone, but I keep wussing out. I'm going to wait and see what kind of refurb they give me then decide between an Elite or 120 hdd.

Man, I don't want to ever think about standing in that launch line ever again. 12 hours in a back room at Walmart. The first thing that happened after the second person showed up? He showed me midget porn on his ipod.

I would buy it except for the fact that MS supposedly can detect the voltage difference when concerning the exhaust fans. That is the only thing holding me back (getting it banned from live)

O_O you serious? they're that sneaky? ...why not fix their darn xboxs instead of collecting info and sneaking on people?

I got my 360 back..or well A 360 back. Its manufacture date is 5-21-2008. So it looks like I'm hopefully done with my problems now. I really hope they don't fuck up like this again, sending you refurbished band-aid consoles when your console breaks. Just send a new one and be done with it.

Yup, mine came back yesterday too.

Sent a 7-X-07 in, got a 4-8-08 back. There were black scuffs on one edge and I frickin' packed it better to send it to Microsoft than they did returning it.

But oh well, I'm a whore. I hooked it up and went and bought a 120g hdd.

Edit: Oh, and it's LOUD. I don't know if I'm just not used to the noise anymore since it was dead for three weeks or what. I didn't remember it being that annoying though.

God damn motherfucking fuck the duck DAMNIT!

FINE then I'll just play more Wii while send my third dead corpse to the necromancer of Microsoft.

Man, did you know they don't send you a coffin anymore? Thanks for the heads up, MS Customer Service! YOU DUNCES.

I could have had my 360 back by now.

I COULD BE PLAYING ROCK BAND 2 TOMORROW.

I've been thinking about getting a Xbox 360 Arcade because my pro system is starting to die and my warranty is expired :(

Quick question for anyone who has recently purchased the Arcade. Does it have the HDMI port? I have one of the older pros without it so I figure buying an arcade and the HDMI cables is the cheapest deal. That way I can just slap the Hard drive into it and everything will be fine. Is there anything else I should know about the Arcade?

Well, I posted some time ago about a friend of mine that was clueless because his 360 RROD'd (sp?:p) after exactly 1 year....and he had an extended warranty from CompUSA, but they went out of business...mostly, and didn't know if to send it to MS or talk to the company that provided the warranty, expecting a big "NO"...

Well, he contacted the company, they just asked to bring it to their building..he was worried about losing the HDD...but anyway, he went..
They took the console, asked if he wanted the HDD, because of his saves and stuff..he said "Of course"..gave him back the HDD and a check for what he paid last year ($349.99) for it.. :O!

So now he's going to get a new Xbox (Arcade bundle), with 5 Arcade games and a memory card (plus he already has HDMI cables, headset, wireless controllers, etc...original HDD)..for $150 less than what he paid originally.. :p

  • HDMI Port
  • 5 Arcade games in 1 disc
  • 256MB Memory Unit
  • White disc tray-trim
  • Wireless Controller
Everything's here.

Wait. WHAT?!
I have been waiting for a week and three days for my box. They really don't send them anymore? Am I supposed to supply my own box?

Same thing happened to my launch unit when I first sent it in about 2 years ago. Came back loud as hell. Just got it back from another RROD Friday. Now it's a billion times quieter. Still louder than my Wii or PS3, but I no longer have to jack up the volume on the TV to compensate. After the first repair it sounded like a little vacuum cleaner.

Check whatever email account is associated with your Xbox, and check the junk/spam filter folder as well. Nowadays they apparently either send you a box, or more likely, email you a UPS label to print. You have to provide your own box and packing material. =/ Luckily, where I work has tons of boxes and packing material, since we ship thousands of dollars of stuff a day, so that wasn't an issue for me. I am keeping the box they sent the 360 back in, though. Just in case.

OK, I've got an unique issue. Technically MS sent me back the same system again (which makes it twice they've done that), so no mystery refurb system. The serial# matches at least. However, this time around, they obviously switched around the innards and changed the console ID of the system, which means all the DLC is broke when I'm not hooked up on Live. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the repair center supposed to switch my DLC licenses to the new console ID while the unit was there? I know I could use the license transfer tool to get everything all happy, but I was hoping to get a new unit by Christmas, so if I use the tool now, I won't be able to use it again for another year. This bugs the shit out of me, as the damned repair center should have done this already, and I don't want to be "penalized" because they didn't do their job 100%.

I called the 800# yesterday and spoke to "Michael" ("Michael" from Bangladesh), who swore up and down that I could go ahead an use the tool, and I'd be able to use it again in a few months if I got another Xbox. I told him to send me an email detailing that, 'cause I want that in writing. Needless to say, I haven't seen crap via email.

Does anyone know what hours during the week that the 800# is staffed by the US call center? I figure I'll call back and try and get verifiable proof that they will let me move content to another box in less than 12 months since they didn't complete their process at the repair center.

Usually during regular north america business hours. You call off hours and you'll guaranteed to get outsourced service.
asking right away to speak to a supervisor sometimes will help too if you get someone you can't understand ..

Cool. Thanks!

I RROD'd last night, but this morning it's working.
Should I still send it away or risk it?
I think it's because I has it close to a wall, I know 360 cannot handle it's heat.
It should be OK if I leave it in a good area... right?

what's to risk? keep using it until it officially dies. The older models don't really care if they're close to a wall or cool, the heat problems for the older ones are more a problem internally than something you could do to make it not happen.

don't know why they're not sending boxes to you folks. I received mine just last week. BB I'm across the Hudson from you so it's not a regional thing.

i'm sure it's because the reps are told to try and avoid sending coffins as often as possible. i just called (again) to ask if they still sent boxes and the rep told me no. i then asked if i could get a box because i don't have a printer and was told they would send me a box if i needed it.

flippin dickheads.

Ahh time to enjoy some Mass Effect after a long and exhausting day... except, ain't happening pal.

That's the second 360 to crap out on me. Hopefully MS can find it in their kind heart to send me a new one and not some crappy refurb this time around. Good thing I have a PS3 (this time) in case Microsoft makes me wait for 6 weeks again...

edit: called Xbox support (surprised they were still available after 9pm). Got a very friendly woman on the phone. They'll send a UPS dude to my house some time this week. I have to arrange my own coffin, again (cheap ass European Xbox division). Still +1 for Xbox's support service. My previous encounter was not so smooth but I guess they've had plenty of time and dead 360s to perfect the service. :lol
They said it will take an estimated 3 weeks for it to return but I'll take that shit with a grain of salt, last time it took them twice as long to send me a pathetic refurb.

Ah, you see I don't bother calling anymore. I just go online and fill out the request. 3-4 days later UPS arrives with my box.

If you send in a non-HDMI 360, you get a non-HDMI unit back.

I'm sure you can imagine how many towels would be grabbed off their racks if MS started sending HDMI 360s to all faulty console owners. :lol

A man can dream can't he? :lol

so I contacted Microsoft support last week, my 360's drive was having issues reading brand new discs. My power goes out yesterday after Ike reached here in southern Ohio and we get power back this evening. Fire up the ole box to play some COD4 and I get my red ring of death. This will be my 4th 360, thank god I have a PS3 now. Support says "and you also get a 30 day free month of xbox live, isn't that cool?".... "um no, I'll be without my fucking system for a month and I paid for that so how is that free?"

Update:

Just logged into the repair centre home on xbox.com and it seems that a new 360 has been registered to me (at least, the serial number of the console is newer). Hopefully that means mine has now been replaced and is on its way back to me.

Incidentally, my old serial number was 428******** and the new one is 506********. I hope that is somehow indicative that the 360 winging its way back to me is a new (or newer) model than I sent in. (it had better be a falcon unit too or I'm going to throw my 175w psu at someone...I did actually put an A4 piece of paper in the box that said "Falcon with 175W PSU. Please don't send me a 203W unit back".)

That's kind of sad.... :/

Been roughly 6 months since I got my 360 back... and now I'm getting a disc read error. It goes to a white screen that's 480p with japanese and english text about inserting a 360 disc? I'd take a picture but my camera's outta juice.

Microsoft covers faulty drives too, right?

EDIT: No, no they do not. Looks like I'm calling the hot line tomorrow. In the meantime: roasting it in blankets and then putting it in the fridge until RROD.

EditTwo: Got a free repair from calling and bitching about it. :D.

So i bought a new 360, beacuase my elite is on its way to the repair center. The thing is that when i connect my new 360 I can't get it online it always says ip address obtain failed. I've tried a lot of things the last 30 minutes.

Anyone got any clues?
