Naoki Hamaguchi interview with Epic Games about the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Despite Final Fantasy's long history with PCs, stretching back more than half its life, it still feels like a console series to many fans—but that's something Hamaguchi and his team are hoping will change, especially when it comes to newcomers.

"While Final Fantasy is a popular series in the RPG genre, PC players who may have never played a Final Fantasy game before may not know that each installment is a unique and standalone experience," Hamaguchi explained. "As such, Rebirth on PC is a perfect entry point."

This PC release also provides an opportunity for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to shine on the unique hardware available to PC gamers—above and beyond the already impressive PlayStation 5 version.

"The lighting rendering has been greatly adjusted," Hamaguchi said, referencing one of the major complaints from Rebirth's console release, in which the game's dramatic lighting would sometimes create an uncanny valley effect with character faces. "For high-spec PCs, we have prepared even richer 3D models and texture resolutions that cannot be processed on the PS5."

Going back to its initial release, Final Fantasy VII has long symbolized Square Enix's desire to bring console RPGs and PC gaming together under one umbrella. It's an apt goal, given Final Fantasy and the PC have been spiritually intertwined since the beginning, and a perfect tribute to the ambitions of Hironobu Sakaguchi.

Square enix can continue to throw the ps5 and sony under the bus for why final fantasy isn't selling as well as it once did but the truth is that the series has sucked since ff10. They keep wanting to make these realistic and gritty final fantasy games when the fanbase truly wants them to go back to the silly and quirky characters and stories that they use to tell. The older games worked so well because the combat was great, the story was high fantasy with incredible worlds and unique destinations, the characters were all fun and unique and had appealing designs, and the games all had a unique feel to them. Final fantasy has lost itself as a series and square enix has no one to blame but themselves for that.

They take too much time to complete development, and then they offer nothing of relevance to the table. I think they should've perhaps settled with a certain direction and stick with that. You could argue the SNES and PSX games did, they were fairly similar in approach. Mostly the settings were different, but for the rest they played rather similar.

After X they tried to do whatever without any clear direction. For me they did struck gold with XII which I really enjoyed and I felt grew along with the ageing audience but then threw everything outside and came up with the immature XIII which was a heavily simplified, linear emo game and moved on to the weird and dysfunctional action gameplay of XV.

Lmao the game doesn't look nearly as good to not been able to run properly on a ps5, you are just shit at optimizing :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Old ass engine, it's old even by UE4 standards.

Game was also stuttering already on PS5 so I don't have much hope for PC version.

If they don't update engine for Part 3 they can go fuck themselves (also for that nonsense story).

Some of the models and textures in the game are truly terrible, like PS3 quality or maybe worse. I'm not sure it has anything to do with hardware.

Their engine is a mess, they dont know how to optimize it properly so they can implement normal modern looking textures. Its frustrating to play Rebirth and finding constantly ps2 textures in the environments. Even the geometry and polygonal count of some assets is a fucking joke.

Lmao, you pinpoint the salty Sony fanboys on this thread.

To me it seems Square is the one thats kind of salty. They probably expected more sales from both FFVII Remake and FFXVI. Ignoring the fact one is a heavily drawn out piece of an old game, and the other is a slog to get through. Plus, Rebirth is piece 2 of said old game, ofcourse its going to sell less as a chunk of players rightfully noped out.

To sell a JRPG in this day and age you need to come up with something better than they did, simple as that.

Maybe not fucking release it one year later for a high price?
Actually, the price of Rebirth on PC matches Rebirth's PS5 Black Friday price, at least in my country. That's a good price for a new release.
As for PS5, its performance falls short in many games, this generation underdelivered... they should have waited more to release these consoles.

I don't think anyone is a fanboy for saying the series has sucked since ff10. No one gives a crap about final fantasy that much anymore because square enix has moved away from what made the series great to begin with. It's less so being a fanboy, and more so being a realist.

These lot always moaning why not just be multiplatform from the start.

Exclusive games are an awkward relic of the past. I find it really weird that everything isn't just available day one on all platforms.

Make your engine scalable. Spend time doing it. Then release it on all platforms. ps5 sales aren't going to stop if you don't have exclusives.

If Sony are so worried about hardware sales stopping they need to be the best place to play the damn games and innovate in hardware and capabilities. Stop pissing about with mid tier hardware and give customers options.

PS6 should be a top end 1k + system that is equal or close to the available PC hardware. Then they should release a significantly cheaper and weaker option like a PS6s that is hadl the price still relatively powerful but foregoes the high end features like RT and high fps.

Series X tried it but it was too much the other way . It went from mid spec to potato. Go high end and mid spec. Release all games day 1 on pc and Xbox and then just make your console the best place to play them.

If the sales are disappointing on the platform where it’s by far the most storied and popular, then odds are that it won’t do great anywhere else.

The only place where FF would have a chance at selling better than on PS is on Switch. I think it does alright on PC, but I bet it’s another late port with poor performance. They’ll likely be disappointed with the sales there too.

Like many pc ports of late, this will bomb. They’re trying really hard to sell up their games on pc but don’t be surprised when square is disappointed once again in sales.

Maybe they can try and blame it on the lack of a mobile port next time for the laughs
It always happens with games with bad word of mouth like Remake, GoW:R or Horizon: FW, but games with a good word of mouth like Persona 5 and 3, Days Gone or first GoW did well, so this might do better than the last 2 Final Fantasy released there or last Horizon.

What are you talking about? FF7 Remake looks fantastic on the PS4, and even better on the PS5, so how does Rebirth manage to look worse on the PS5 than Remake did on the PS4, despite having the same exact look?

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FF titles for either system, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and cancel FF titles for PC or you can kiss your business goodbye

same shit GIF

On every late release of S-E games on pc they say the same shit.

Then the game sells like shit on pc, because most of people that really wanted to play it already did it on Playstation.

Yes, there are people that like FF on pc, but Sony's money is probably better than those sales or at least thats what S-E believes, because they keep doing the same thing over and over.

They said the same thing with Integrade, and trust me friend, the textures were slightly better but ultimately the improvements were still lacking, apart from the lighting and the jpg backgrounds which admittedly, made the game look better

sure thing. I'll experience the "slightly" better textures myself next month.

Honestly, you guys are getting a bit insufferable with how you imply that the only platform games sell on is PS.

I can't wait for the steam release!

I was having such a good time on the lower ps5 ver that I stopped playing to wait for the far better pc experience. Looks like the right decision. 😎

I don't want to hear that when there things in the game that look straight out of the PS3 era with blurry textures. Not to mention how long it takes to make each part of the Remake that by the time the third installment releases we might as well have the PS5 by then.

Most PC ports will bomb because they’re late and the hype cycle has died and most PC gamers just don’t care at that point. Then there’s the tech issues a lot of the ports face.

A point I don’t see brought up as often as it should be is PC is a massively multiplayer focused platform versus PS5 so it’s no surprise that games like Horizon, Spider-Man and God of War sell fractions of what they do on console.

Just as Returnal did on PC, right:

Or as Horizon: FW:

I played hfw on pc and ps5 and the texture are the pretty much the same, what you see is probably the difference between native 4k and upscaling (dlss quality can look better than native and DLAA looks always better than native) or because you have some blur in the left pic, almost no sony game has better textures on pc, it's usually a matter of native vs sony upscaling solution, they just look sharper on pc.

Days gone is another game that look much better on pc but i'm not sure if it had downright better texture or it was just a matter of better iq\higher framerate that give even better clarity.

I didn't played returnal on pc so i trust you.

Looks like motion blur+bad AF on PS5. The textures are the same.

Returnal is 4K vs 1080p. Pretty sure the textures are also the same.

How's that different from what the DLSS upscaling does? And if the assets used by the two versions are exactly the same, why does the end result look so much worse on a console?

- It's the blur's fault.
- It's the bad texture filtering.
- It's the resolution's fault.
- It's the engine's fault.
- It's the bad PSSR implementation.
- It's the poor optimization.
- It's the developer's fault.

It's always someone else messing things up with the PS5.

It's different because the textures are identical. If you drop the resolution to 1080p on PC, it will look the same. The reason the PC side is clearer is because the entire image is higher res. The texture hasn't changed.

I mean, if you wanna go that route, sometimes, PC straight-up looks worse than PS5 in some of those ports.

I'm saying the shots you used aren't examples of worse textures on PS5. In Sony exclusives, the PC version often barely scales above the PS5 one and there are frequently visual bugs such as missing lights, shadows, effects, and more. In game like BMW, sure, the textures on PC are better. Not in Returnal or HFW though.

Unfortunately for them telling lies that Rebirth is a standalone game and a perfect entry point to the series when it's a direct sequel with an open ending that requires having played the previous game to understand something about the story and characters, won't help their sales.
They're just admitting that they think that multiple parts have hurt the sales potential.
