Woah woah woah Nozzy, save the anger for the ice, alright buddy o pal?

Well now that we seem to be Sox free someone has to be obnoxious.

I feel oddly tempted to use my kinect as a mic and blast "Bonecracker" into it

Plus 1 for party chat over the shoddy in game chat.

I for one, won't be picking up the season pass (since I lack the funds) but on Tuesday, I should have it. My hype is building up.

You can buy a season pass whenever right? Like it doesnt matter if its close to early release or anything, probably gonna get it tomorrow morning

Ughhhh I don't wanna buy it....but '12 sucks...does it last a year? How much HDD space do I need?

Lasts a year yeah. It's two things, the Season Ticket app (which is inconsequentially small) and then the full game download, same size as if you installed it to your HDD. So like 3.5-5gb

Hmmm so year should get me early access to '13 and '14 right? That makes it more appealing if true. Especially cause I might not be able to get the full game for a couple of days.

Unless you get owned and the early release for 14 is a day or two after your expiration date.

I dunno, mine actually expires tomorrow, but I'm not sure when it expires vs when NHL becomes downloadable

I've been thinking about strategy stuff the past couple days and have been busy making diagram gifs for some more advanced stuff, but wanted to hit on 3 basic things I think would be helpful to focus on starting out the year:

1) COMMUNICATION - STANDARDIZE OFFENSIVE ZONE AREA NAMES
If we hope to have better communication this year and improve our offensive zone possession, goal scoring and reduce turnovers (cue Viz jokes) it might not hurt for everyone to be on the same page as far as calling out areas when you are open or if someone else is open. The image below is mostly self-explanatory, lets keep the names short and distinct.

KEY TERMS:

  • WALL can stand for either the winger along the wall up the boards on the defensemen down the boards near the blueline. Despite the names being the same there shouldn't be any confusion as really the only time you will be calling for someone to pass up or down the wall is when some already has it along the wall.

  • POINT is the big change. Last year, most of us used POINT to refer to either defenseman position (along the wall or center ice), I think it might be helpful to separate them, so if someone calls out POINT you know immediately to look to the center of the blueline. This split second saved not needing to check both areas could result in us getting some more goals.

2) EASY GOALS - SETUP SCREENS AND DEFLECTIONS
In general, we did a really shitty job with this last year, but there wasn't a whole lot of incentive to really use these tools. From all I've played in the demo these look to be waaaay more effective in 13. The improvement we need to make is 2 fold here.

FORWARDS
  • Pay attention, if the puck is passed out to either D-MAN at the blueline, either the weak-side WINGER or preferably the CENTER always needs to go to the front of the net to set a screen. Every Single Time...

  • Good screens that result in clean goals on a blind goalie or deflection goals usually require that you be out away from the goalie at least a body length, so keep that in mind. Don't stand right on top of him, it usually doesn't help in the game as it does in the real NHL, and you may get checked into the goalie causing an interference penalty
DEFENSEMEN
  • Our job is simple. Keep it simple. When shooting for a screen don't wind up for a big slapshot, it's pointless, the accuracy has been drastically reduced and they result in turnovers more than they make it on net. Just move laterally if necessary until you get an opening/shooting lane and fire a high wrister on net, I'd recommend curling the wrister too to get a little more power on it. Only curl if you think have the room, if you are too close to the line the curling motion may cause you to drag the puck back across the blueline for offsides.

  • I think this can be a nice added dimension to our offensive game that is easy to execute that we can get a shit ton of easy and garbage goals this year. IF... the forwards focus on making sure they go to the net whenever d-men end up with the puck and the defensemen make sure to put the right kind of shots on net.

3) LIMITING TURNOVERS - DO YOUR PART TO HELP US ESCAPE THE FORECHECK
I have no doubt it the forecheck will be vicious this year, and we will run into some teams who smother us worse than anything we've ever seen before. Every position has an important role to play to ensure we can smoothly get the puck out of the zone.

WHEN 1 OF THE D-MEN GETS THE PUCK IN DEEP BEHIND THE NET
  • The other D-MAN needs to get behind the net and be available as a pass option

  • The CENTER needs to comeback and position himself in the center of the defensive zone slot to give the D-MAN his 1st outlet. Make sure you constantly adjust your positioning to give the D-MAN a clear passing lane if the forechecker is trying to deny the pass

  • The WINGERS need to be all the way out against the wall. If you get lazy and leave even as small of a gap as 1 body length away from the wall it makes the pass a lot more difficult for the D-MAN to aim and complete. There is some glitch with the auto-aim that has trouble locking onto the receiver if you are slightly off the wall.

IF THE D-MAN DECIDES TO WALK THE PUCK UP

The other D-MAN needs to trail slightly across the ice to act as a safety valve. There are 3 important reasons for this:
  • In case the puck carrier runs into too much pressure you are in a position to allow him to make a safe pass.

  • In the puck carrier is turns the puck over, you are in position to back them up on defense rather than being ahead of them which would result in a 1v1 with the goalie

  • Ensures you are also not blocking a potential passing lane preventing a long outlet pass to the opposite side winger.

D-MEN when in doubt if you get in trouble and there are no other pass options, there's no harm in flip-dumping the puck down the ice. I will take a icing over a turnover/easy scoring chance the other way every single time.

So, what you're saying is that I need to constantly go behind the net to give Marvie a passing option? Alright, consider it done.

From my playing time with the demo, d men taking the puck off the faceoff and moving to the left or right a few week and writing it is really effective. Shooting into people's kneecaps never works out. About the screen thing, I'll have to work on that I'm not very good at it, I prefer working off the wall and behind the net. Marvies pretty good at screening. The rest of the D diagrams look look good as easy to follow. Having terms will make this easier.

just get in front of the goalie and the shooter will do the hard part

as a Center you really don't have much else to do once the puck goes out to the blueline

it also helps to face the shot and let your left stick go neutral as the shot is coming near you as that usually kicks on the random animations for tips and getting out of the way of shots

I'll just have to practice it more. Im going to be making a smaller / lighter player too so it might be better to get a big PWF to screen. Well try it all out when we get going. Two things I think we really need to establish are entering the zone and playoff strategies. We can do that when it comes out or w/e.

First, the top "wall" is the half boards and should be referred to as such. Granted, the half boards entail a decent sized chunk of the boards but it's the winger's responsibility to read the play and make sure they're in the best spot possible. "Wall" can refer to where the d-man should be positioned on the strong side when we're on offense. It'll just get confusing if we have multiple spots with the same name.

Second, the point is inside the offensive zone. Your preschool level diagram is way off. ;)

Another thing, we HAVE to make sure we're keeping our eyes moving looking to find open guys. I'm going to use Legit as an example here but everyone has been guilty of these things. Legit loved him some short side cheese, but far too often, he'd miss a wide open player while attempting to go short side. We HAVE to make sure we're looking for the best possible option. As far as the players without the puck go, make sure you're trying to get open and make yourself into a good option. It doesn't help if you're standing still next to a defender with your stick up your ass.

Another thing to note for forwards: We need to use the area behind the net more, whether its passing around the boards or have someone positioned there as a passing option. We tried to do it a little bit last year but we never used it enough for it to be effective. Viz and I like to use a give and go type play when he's down below the goal line and if we used it more, I know it can be effective.

DEFENSEMEN Our job is simple. Keep it simple.
Sums it up well. Same goes for forwards though. One player trying to do too much gets us into trouble.

3) LIMITING TURNOVERS - DO YOUR PART TO HELP US ESCAPE THE FORECHECK
One thing that would help on this is to not have two forwards cherry picking all the way down the ice all the time. With passes being easier to break up this year, We can't force these long stretch passes through 3 guys anymore. It doesn't do us a damn bit of good to have someone taking themselves so far out of the play.

WHEN 1 OF THE D-MEN GETS THE PUCK IN DEEP BEHIND THE NET
Wings are WAY too high in this diagram. They aren't even options at this point because they're too far up. Passes to them are turnovers waiting to happen. Center needs to be in the slot area like you have in your diagram but the wings need to be inside the defensive zone near the blue line.

IF THE D-MAN DECIDES TO WALK THE PUCK UP
[*]Ensures you are also not blocking a potential passing lane preventing a long outlet pass to the opposite side winger.
That LD - RW (or RD-LW) pass is dangerous if it's not COMPLETELY WIDE OPEN. Rather than forcing these huge passes all the time that end up being turnovers, the d-men need to use each other more to move defenders around and open up better passing lanes. As I mentioned before, we're not going to be able to get away with these ridiculous half ice passes anymore so we have to make smarter passes.

I forgot about the download for the demo, wonder how big the file is because 5gb would take awhile on my shitty college network

Hey Viz you should be teaching yourself about the turnovers, Mr. #1 in turnovers in the club ;D

Stop shitting on my team. Start shitting on my finger.
Hmmmm I might just get the season pass after all, so I can get some playtime in this weekend. Probably for the best if I take some time off GW2, that game's very time-consuming. When is it gonna go up, 6pm I remember reading? EST or PST?

When are tryouts?

I DON'T WANNA DOWNLOAD MILLY'S HOME MOVIES

I wouldn't call bestiality porn, really...

This ain't Madden!

We do have to work on dumping strategies as well and the cycle.

Whats Madden?

Pro difficulty. Also, demo settings =/= full game settings.

Never said id do it all the time. Lol. Just when
I know its open... catch human Ds off guard...
