Naughty Dog absolutely disgusting TLOU:R MP monetization

I never understood outrage for something you're not forced to buy.

Can't you just...not buy it? I played the MP just fine on PS3 without spending any extra money.

Naughty Hogs while reading this thread

lol...ok i'm done. i really need to try the mp myself

Lol, is that really in the game?

Naw. But apparently made by the same guy at ND that did joel banderas iirc. :D

Having options is an advantage. Having flexibility is an advantage.

Having an unlock that is a situational or fits a particular playstyle, is an advantage because it will make you better when you are in that situation, or are playing in that particular style.

You can argue over how much of an advantage it is, but you're just sticking your head in the sand if you think there's no advantage at all.

I am shocked that all this grindy unlock stuff in multiplayer has led us to this point.

I saw it yesterday and just shook my head. I haven't tried mp yet. I hope the preorder landed me some of that stuff for free. We'll see. PEACE.

So wait. I have the season pass for the PS3 version, so do I get this DLC or do I have to pay for it? I haven't picked up TLoU:R yet, but I'm planning to.

You should be fine with the exception of one mask pack. Quoting myself from earlier in the thread:
I bought the Season Pass for the original and also pre-ordered the disc version of the Remastered edition and the only thing coming up as needing to pay for is the masks/hats in the "Killer Bundle". Everything else; weapons, abilities , masks, etc... was free for me when I downloaded them from the PSN store yesterday.

I honestly thought a thread wouldn't even be made.

I'm upset I even bought the game. If I knew, I wouldn't have. I haven't read too much into the perks, but I've been on the receiving end of some of the DLC weapons and I pretty much just embrace death.

Like I said before, I think the compromise they found here is acceptable but they should have included it all in Remastered. Sony's MP games actually do stuff like this most of the time, they just fail to gain large enough communities for people to take notice. I assume Sony makes them do it in case they decide to make MP F2P like KZ3 and Uncharted 3. They really need to wait until the F2P transistion happens to load all that crap in though.

I wonder how many of those who are disgusted would think differently if they had any idea how The Last of Us' multiplayer worked? These pieces of DLC give you more customisation options. They do not give you wholesale advantages because to use them, you have to forgo other perks, and other weapons.

I'm not exactly in love with the idea, and I wouldn't pay for them myself if I didn't have a Season Pass anyway. At the same time, this conversation is pointless if people who clearly don't know what they're talking about are going to just spew hyperbole. Without context, I can absolutely understand why this seems so outrageous, but realistically it's not that different from the weapons that are attached to a piece of DLC in Battlefield or Call of Duty. So long as they are balanced with the free stuff, it's not really that bad.

I absolutely adore The Last of Us' multiplayer, but in places (like so many multiplayer games these days) there are areas where gameplay is sacrificed for debatable reasons. It's a pity. At the core, Naughty Dog have produced two incredible multiplayer games in UC2 and TLOU, but they need to learn a lesson about the value of simplicity.

But it's fair! Really!

Is anyone reviewing TLOU for the multiplayer? I can't imagine it's taken too heavily into account, just like most games with tacked on MP modes.

Tomb Raider MP - Tacked on.
TLoU - The real deal.

You can use those weapons without purchasing the DLC you know, read the op.

Was gonna pick this up mainly for the multiplayer when I get a ps4, wtf is this? This is horrible even by f2p standards. No way I'm touching this.

I'm really getting sick of this "it offers a different style of play" or "for gamers who want an alternative route" or some other bullshit phrase defending the increasingly ridiculous amounts of monetization being present in games. Enough is enough.

Kind of hilarious... but people who should actually get this stuff for free (PS3 season pass holders) are prompted to buy on PSN.

It's possible many people have paid for it twice.

I can guarantee it's happened to at least one idiot.

And they're available to everyone in preset combos? The "paid" part is if you want to create custom combos?

I guess I'll try it for myself, but if I understand it correctly it doesn't seem like that big of a deal, unless there is a game breaking custom combo.

This is NOT a relevant counter argument because

A. You're getting base level versions of the skills instead of the much more powerful level 3 versions of the skills.

B. The loadouts suck in general.

I'm guessing you don't play a lot pl MP right? Those are 2 huge factors.

Its not the worst thing in the world and its not as bad as like 2k or something but in a competitive multiplayer this is the worst implementation I've seen and it deserves to be called out.

Edit: Anyone who is saying the multiplayer doesn't matter is so full of it. What does that even mean? How would you know its tacked on if you don't even play it?

Tomb Raider MP - Tacked on.
TLoU - The real deal.

They're both pretty tacked in IMO.

They both play fairly horribly. I really want those missing trophies on the PS3 version but I'm not sure I can drag myself through it.

At least in Tomb Raider you can grind it out alone and chip away at it for a few of them.

Nope. TLOU multiplayer is the best exclusive multiplayer on Playstation consoles. It is not really tacked on at all, and is some serious and deep and unique fun.

You have to claim it on the PS3 store but season pass owners do get everything except for the new mask pack.

You liked Tomb Raider multi more than TLoU multi?

And how can you really say its tacked on when almost all of the DLC for the game is centered around multiplayer?

Multiplayer games should offer an even playing field to players by allowing access to all weapons/perks that have an impact in games or the ability to customize them. If you want to have bonus cosmetic dlc I could care less. Sucks you can't unlock it but whatever. When its something like not being allowed to customize your character's abilities the way you want and there might be better customization choices then the preset then it gives people who threw down extra money an advantage. Essentially you're promoting Pay2win.

I like how you used that image. I have taken note.

On topic: I don't see what's wrong here. I don't usually buy DLC, unless it's taken out of the game as part of the story, that I am guilty of (fucking Mass Effect and the shadow broker)
This shit is supplemental and doesn't look like it would give people much of advantage over the next person who doesn't own the stuff.

Naughty Dog's paid dues, they should be paid in return. Long as they don't start slicing out parts of their games and selling it as DLC,

Many people have already paid them for this game twice though, in some cases with DLC/season passes on top of that. That's why it's a little disheartening (maybe not absolutely disgusting) to fire up the MP and see that there's still paid content beyond that, even if it is just weapons/perks/cosmetic items. ND are far from the only ones guilty of this, but the growing trend of micro-transactions in retail games has reached the point where it's an expectation, and that's probably where a lot of the frustration lies. Especially to see it in what many people expected to be a "definitive" release, even if it was never explicitly marketed as such.

Nope, it isn't available in custom loadouts which sucks.

I have to agree with this. The mod-edit makes it sound like it's not really a big deal, but take for instance when I played Titanfall... unlocking the extra Titans for custom loadouts through playing both "Campaigns" was annoying enough. I'd be pretty angry if things like that were only accessible in custom-loadouts via my wallet. It's in bad taste IMO.

I "purchased" (for free) it last night but you're right, they popped up with the prices initially but after about a minute it reverted to Free. I just chalked it up to PSN being PSN since that happens all the time; something I've purchased pops up with the price sometimes but then a moment later the "Purchased" status clicks in.

Like what!?

This irks me to no end. All of those things are something I wouldn't spend a dime on and you are telling me I couldn't just play to earn them? Especially considering the remastered edition should have all the dlc content? This is just down right dirty. The "Eh, option this - it doesn't effect me" bs needs to stop. This is straight up underhanded.

Its not an essential part of the main game its optional and you don't have to play/buy it.

Is this real life? You don't have to buy it? Did you say the same thing about Battlefield 4 or *insert f2p game you don't like here*? And who decides if its essential or not? Its a diamond in the rough and easily the best multiplayer Sony has ever produced.

This isn't F2P bullshit, this is 4 semi-terrible weapons (except for the Spectre and Enforcer) and 8 extremely situational perks as DLC in a game where you don't even have to win a match to succeed in the herd-building. Should they have been in the game completely free? Yes. Is it unfair having them be paid? No.

I understand where you're coming from. It's why I tend to stay away from DLC. Redundant as it sounds, I still feel dirty for buying that shadow broker DLC. Ok, this topic is reminding me how frustrated I once was with DLC.

Carry on, infuriated.

Because you are an uninformed consumer. I already made a post about this in the OT and I'm too lazy to dig it up, and I AM NOT DEFENDING SONY(just stressing this before someone calls me a shill
lol
) . Perhaps they did a bad job at this. But if anybody is going to be this upset over $5-10, then you should have bothered to have done some research before hand. This doesn't make it right, but this could have also been avoided.

You are right i am uniformed. I have been avoiding the OT and anything that has to do with this game because of spoliers (i did not own a PS3). I guess i was a little bit fast on the burn in hell ND train, im sorry about that.
I have never played the MP so i dont know what kinda impact these "items" that are locked will have but reading this thread makes it sounds like its not a big deal. I guess time will tell when more pople get into the MP. As long as its not pay to get an advantage im fine with it but it sounds like they are on thin ice here.

Huh. That's weird. I have the season pass for the original and also preordered the Remastered, but everything minus ONE mask bundle was priced.

I just chalked it up to PSN being PSN since that happens all the time; something I've purchased pops up with the price sometimes but then a moment later the "Purchased" status clicks in.

A couple of the country flags kept saying $0.99, so I had to purchase them through the online store and then, they showed up as purchased and installed on the PS4 storefront.

Those were the only issues I had, although even with the disc inside, in the game view it still has the option to buy it for $54.99 (as a digital version), which can come really close to being purchased again if I decide to play Dark Souls 2 on my PS3 with my Dualshock 4! I don't like this.

And what if my playstyle fits one of those situational perks? And what if my playstyle would be better suited by using those perks in a custom loadout?

It is an advantage. A huge one? Probably not, but is there a point to arguing over how much of an advantage? Why argue over how bad something is? The point is it's bad, there's no upside. Players would be better served with this stuff not being behind a paywall.

Damn. An apology for jumping to conclusions.

Nice shit.
