NBA 2K9 Trailer + gameplay

took me several games but I can now drive at will with Kobe and get either : a layup, foul, or dunk.

I hope it isn't this easy against a human because yikes. I can see the abuse coming from a mile away this year

It's probably set on Pro.

I played for about an hour. It's still solid as ever but I did notice a couple of things that bothered me. Before inbounding the ball the player you're controlling walks through molasses. Once the computer decides to let you control him freely, it's normal, and while it's not affecting gameplay, it's really annoying fro some reason. Also, I don't like the "run into the defender" animation this year. it seems much longer and drawn out. For example, I'm arounf the top of the key, but closer to the sideline. I make a move towards the basket but the defender gets a step and fronts me. No big deal, but the animation of my player pushing into the defender sends me all the way to the baseline and now I'm vulnerable through no fault of my own.

Also, they dumbed down the post moves a bit. Last year if you had a player like KG and you were backing someone down, you could let go of the LT and he would spin in that direction and leave the defender behind. This isn't the case anymore, forwards can still do it, but it seems big men will do a little hopstep and stop in their tracks without you telling them to.

Anybody else notice the lack of commentary?

yeah...doesn't bother me though

the game is always better than the demo...none of the complaints have bothered me so far
it's also better playing with gaf people.

Pretty much. I went up against my brother earlier and attempted to just fucking spas the hell out in the paint by using isomotion and just do to the speed and variation of the moveset I was able to work my way into the paint fairly quickly.

For leagues, local games, player matches, and etc this won't be a problem, but for your typical ranked matches I can see cheese being worse than ever this year due to default game speeds.

360 Demo is Live Gold only. Sucks because I wanted to compare to see which version I was gonna buy ;/

Not sure demos of the game are the best judge for this type of comparison, but the 360 version of Live appears to suffer less from the jaggies going off the demo.

In addition, I prefer the way the 360 version renders versus the PS3 version though that is probably a matter of preference.

So i was a ble to play about 2 hrs of NBA Live 09 today on Xbox 360.

Gameplay

Gameplay is much better because fast breaks actualy transition properly, the amazing pick and roll feature and they really tweaked the layup and dunk animations and players move very well and break out of animations.

Graphics

Court Textures are done well, backboard lights, statdum lights reflect and graphics animate fludily.

Audio

Commentary is very good and they talk about history as well as call plays.

Modes
Dynasty Mode, Allstar weekend return with added features like NBA Academy and Be a Pro. Plus we have DNA and 365

So looking at what i played i'd give NBA Live 09 a 9.0/10

why does everybody look average....and KG looks photo realistic lol.

2k9 aint that half bad. When they said they went for quality they really meant it. Once again they do somethin to the controls and it changes everything. With games like FIFA, Live, PES, and Madden the game controls exactly the same every time. With NBA 2k, tweaks to the general mechanics seem to make the game feel screwy. last year they changed everything by putting dribble moves on the movement stick (on top of many other tweaks). Now the new weight, some carefully placed animations, and a whole assortment of other random shits put the game upside down for me.

So once again i'm in a position where i'm hating the demo, but i know i'll probably like the full game.

I can hold em off by suggesting the purchase of used games at gamestop....but i don't know how long that will last.

The more I play the Demos of both games, the more I appreciate Live... I know Live has been horrible for the past 10 years, but
<Magic Johnson>HE BACK BABY, HE BACK!</Magic Johnson

The play calling is simple but lovely... Some of the player models look better as well imho... Kobe on 2K is UGLY. He's Ugly on live too, a bit overweight, but he resembles Kobe more on Live than 2K. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings BTW.

Really? Really?

D/L'ed the demo today. Sucks that you can't change the camera, i prefer playing behind the back view. Graphics are definately much improved. Animations are great too. Less robotic and the transitions are better. Makes it feel much more natural when running fast breaks, pulling up for 3s or fighting for rebounding position.

seriously, anyone who plays sideline view is a communist. 2K view is the way, the truth and the light.

*salutes the USSR*

it was ok in the early games where the players were all extra blocky and you couldn't see past them, but now default is the best, Especially when you run plays where you have a guy running the sidelines on catch and shoot plays.

I had issues with Live on 360(control setup) and with K9 on PS3 (jaaaaaggies)
but K9 on 360 and Live on PS3 felt great overall. I made the right call on my pre-order.

jobber are you playing in the 2k9 league? for some reason you don't like responding to my pms, but go to the online forum and let us know.

i have to agree. i was going to get both, but after playing the shit out of both demo's, i've settled on Live 09 outright. i just like it more. fresh, new and awesome.

I still don't understand why I can't shoot a jumpshot after I create space with a jab step.

wtf. this better be in the full game...

Strange. I'm able to do a backwards hopstep or whatever and shoot at any point after that in the demo.

same here. i actually get open jumpshots now...

ps cerrius you are screwed for getting the heat and you know it. i have been playing the camera angle from the demo forever now...and you have been using 2k. consider it my homecourt advantage!

The backward hopstep isn't a problem. It's when you're in the triple threat position and you can jab step, protect the ball, shot fake, etc. If you jab step and the defender falls back thinking you're going to drive, the game doesn't let you shoot the ball for some reason.

for those who don't know, the triple threat position is activated by holding left trigger + right trigger.

Yeah the side view just doesn't click with me. It feels extremely awkward. I think I can still pose a worthy challenge though.

Yeah the shot from the triple threat (after jabstepping) is broken. I mean, you can let go of turbo and everything else and shoot, but the defender is back in your face at that point.

Also, after TXB's review of Live I re DLed the demo. After playing both demos an embarrasing amount of times I can say with ease that Live isn't up to par. The player model are so off, they all have monkey limbs with arms that are too long. Players don't resemble themselves at all animation-wise. After watching Kobe be Kobe in 2K9 or Odom throw up a layup high off the backboard, watching the same players in Live leaves alot to be desired. The flow in 2K is also better, and I have no problem with player spacing myself. Man I'm glad I checked for myself cause I was seriously considering picking up Live this weekend at my mom and pop. It's not good enough yet.

I completely agree with you from the respect of Live 09 not having the signature styles down quite yet. It's very hit and miss thus far in Live 09. On one hand you have Carlos Boozer that moves around in the post with the sharpness and preciseness you see in real life, and then you have other scenarios like Lamar where he isn't represented quite right.

I don't think you can go wrong this year, it's all about what feels good to you.

what i don't understand about live is, why the hell can't the players jump quickly? everything is so heavily governed by momentum that it hinders actual playability and functionality. I think I've maybe blocked ONE shot in all my play time.

yeah, the signature styles are pretty big for me. i don't know why...if live does get up to par with 2k on this i will switch. especially because the whole DNA feature sounds incredible

well signature styles do dynamically change the way you play the game by each character. You end up really liking how some players play and you get to know some people really closely. Thats one big feature for me.

Like I remember in 2k7 you know who was my favorite player?

Shannon Brown.

there was something about that guy. The way he shoots, the way moves with the ball. It was magic.

In 2k8 It was Carlos Arroyo and Hakim Noah.

downloading psn demo now. I have never really played any b-ball games, and I have very little knowledge of the game. Will I be able to function in this game? is there a tutorial or something'?

Will you be able to function? :lol

Analog stick is to move right stick is to shoot it's simple!

Although if you've never played bball games before you might wanna try the Live demo. 2K is the better series IMO because of the amount of control it gives you, but it can be really intimidating to new players.

Try both though and see what you like.
