NeoGaf OLED owners thread

To anyone OLED owners out there who doesn't know.

On Windows 11 some games do not enter Auto HDR mode and you cannot play it with HDR and vibrant colors. Try below solution. I tested it on Balatro and Noita and the games enter Auto-HDR mode when started and plays with vibrant colors and HDR mode. No more washed up colors.

--> Go to Nvidia Control Panel.
--> Choose 3D Settings.
--> You can either choose globally or you can apply it game by game basis. I choose the latter.
--> Scroll down on to the "Vulkan/OpenGL Present Method"
--> Choose "Prefer layered on DXGI Swapchain".
--> Save and exit.

Now, like Balatro or Noita, the games which don't trigger auto HDR before enters HDR mode upon start up. Sorry I don't have any info on AMD side but there should be similar options there, I'm sure.

Either the Samsung S90D or the LG C4. Cant go wrong with either one. The Samsung has a brighter panel and better color saturation. LG has a superior OS. The OS is very important if you are not planning on using an AppleTV or something similar. The Samsung OS is pure trash.

Still have the first oled I bought, the C7 and it works perfect. The CX I got after is on my room now. Last year i got the G4 and is absolutely fantastic. Will probably wait until the G7 to upgrade.

Do you see the G4 as a massive upgrade over the CX or more of an incremental one?

So, I've had an LG CX for four-ish years now. Running good in general, no burn-in or dead pixels despite heavy use.

I've had one issue. I'm not really a fan of the "Magic Remote", and usually avoid the Wiimote functionality, but that cursor just wants to pop up at times when you pick up the remote. And on occasion (rarely, but it does happen), the cursor will get stuck somewhere on the screen. And it will remain there - turning the TV off and on again via the remote doesn't help. You'll have to unplug the TV for it to reset.

Annoying, but infrequent. However, yesterday two times, and today two times again, the TV will seem to work fine. But the streaming apps - while browsing for content works fine, when trying to play a video, either there will be sound but no image, or the app will complain about something. And again, simply turning the TV off and on via the remote doesn't help, a full yank of the power cable is required.

Anyone else who has experienced this? I'm not really looking forward to replacing the TV just quite yet (or some years even, if possible). As far as I can tell, I'm running the latest firmware, at least no updates are available for me (via the TV).

Maybe get a streaming box like an apple tv or something. The LG CX should be about 4-5 years old which in chipset terms is quite old.

Yes, hence I've been using it for four-ish years :) Thanks for the suggestion, but if possible, I'd like to get by without another device. But ehh. If this persists, maybe I'll just use the Chromecast Ultra that I already have.

If it's really just the apps misbehaving and there is no solution found I would just buy an Apple TV and stream through there. Not worth the money to replace the whole set if the apps are the only issue.

I agree regarding the remote btw. I have the 77 inch CX and the remote sucks. I spent 3000 bucks to get a remote that needs line of sight to work, come on man. My mid tier Roku TV remote has Bluetooth for god's sake. That's among other poor remote control designs on that stupid thing.

The remote doesn't need line of sight in general, only for the "on/off" signal that's via IR. Otherwise, you can point anywhere, in my experience.

...on a related note. When I bought the TV, there was a bundle with a rather decent Atmos-compatible soundbar+subwoofer. Add a pair of rear speakers, and it's a serviceable home cinema setup. But, said soundbar just barely clears the bottom of the TV, and in the bottom right of the TV frame there's TV IR receiver. So whenever I want to turn the TV on/off, I have to hold the remote high and point downwards. This wouldn't be so weird otherwise, but both the TV and soundbar are made by LG. This is on a standard stand, wall-mounting obviously would rectify this, but I'm willing to bet the majority of customers don't do wall mounts.

Huh, now you're making me second guess myself. I don't usually use the remote much. But I remember using it under a blanket and the damned thing wouldn't register any of my clicks unless I took it out from underneath the blanket.

Maybe many won't agree, but I think the built in speakers are actually quite good! Astonishingly good for their compact size. I got my TV mounted on the wall so I could easily put a soundbar underneath, but I never bothered to get one.

Just tried, watching some shit off the tube. Pointed the remote right down at the couch. Play/pause works just fine. For the sake of argument, put the remote inside my couch-pants (this is purely for science!). Same result.

So yeah, I maintain the actual connection is by some wireless protocol, be it Bluetooth or something else. Just that the on/off signal is via IR, which is kinda annoying.

I got the Sony INZONE M10S a few days ago (27"/ 1440p / 480 Hz). It's my first OLED screen so it's been great! I have two IPS monitors to the side (24" / 1080p / 240 Hz) and the difference is like night and day.

480 Hz feels super stable, it's unreal. The difference from 240 Hz is visibly noticeable. Pretty good stuff.

Hi GAF, finally after several years of waiting I'm upgrading from my decade old 1080p LCD to the S90D OLED, so excited. Can't wait to see whether 4K HDR is truly worth it.

Will use is mainly for PS5 but don't now anything about what I should do with the settings (SDR or HDR). Are there any comprehensive guide to set up the TV and what are your general tips ? Many thanks !

HDR has only ever been worth it on an OLED

I just got an S90D as well, followed this guide for the settings: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/s90d-s90dd-oled-qd-oled/settings

Great ! are you on PS5 as well ? trying to follow general settings to set up the HDR.

What do you think about the TV ?
Yep got PS5 Pro + S90D at the same time. Using those settings, it looks great.

Coming from an LED TCL, I love the S90D. The UI is much better and faster than Roku, and if you have a Samsung soundbar as well, it gives you the option to use Qsymphony.

Please keep your S90D off of the internet. Samsung likes to nerf or make TVs worse with firmware updates. The latest update for the S90C and S95C nerfed the brightness too oblivion as they did with the S95B
I looked into this as this is the first I'm hearing about it.

Based on everything I've read in the past 30 minutes, it seems like a lot of nothing burger fear mongering with no real data backing it up reported by one infamously unscrupulous YouTuber looking for clicks.

Is it fair to say that most people probably have an OLED now.... Any flagship smartphone from the last 5 or so years is rocking one

I don't watch quantum tv, that guy is fucking nuts. I use avsforums where there are talks as well. Well, enjoy Samsung fucking up your tv and making it worse
The people on avsforum are literally saying there's no issue with the S90D firmware, and that QuantumTV is the one spreading false information about it: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/wh...330&nested_view=1&sortby=oldest#post-63710330

Unless you can provide some data to back your claims up, you're just spreading QuantumTV bs as well.

They nerfed the S90C and S95C. But I'm really not going to argue with you, because clearly it's a waste of time. You sound as crazy as Quantum TV

Ok, are those the S90D? Also:
Why would they do that ? Because they are bad guys lmao ?

It sounds like you're getting emotional because you were called out for being wrong. Provide data that backs up anything that you're saying.

Going to upgrade from my 75" X900H to the 2025 Samsung S90F once the price drops over the coming few months. 30% brighter than last years S90D. Can't wait. But I still consider my X900H a great TV. It's a FALD.

I have a 42" C2 and C4 and a 65" S95b. The C4 has been my go to for everything. It's just a really great tv. I have been doing some Doom the Dark Ages on the 65" from the couch and its bee very enjoyable.

I did some research, but the S95C being nerfed is just as unverifiable as his S90D claim. You can check out the owners thread here on avsforum; one guy with a modded S95C claimed that it got nerfed, then somebody else with an unmodded S95C claimed everything looked fine.

Two people, one modded and one unmodded, giving conflicting reports with no real testing done.
I did not mod mine and I never noticed any brightness changes over different FWs (I am running 2024, the latest one right now).

Yup, got an E7 and I got some uggo burn in too. They said the risk was low and all that but I've honestly been quite careful and it still happened. On the bright side I no longer care anymore about it and just yolo with whatever content so there is that. But I would definitely say, Oled for regular content, but gaming is probably better on LCDs, Oled is just not made for it unfortunately if you want a long term screen at least.
B6 and E7 had no mitigations to avoid burn-ins like newer OLED TVs have. For instance, my B6 got burn-ins but my next one, the B9, never got any burn-in. My current S95C is also fine.
