Can anyone please recommend me a good, simple camera app? I don't usually process images so I'm not too worried about that side of things, and generally I just want to take decent quality shots through a simple interface (ie ideally it'd do most of the settings for me)

Should I just stick with the default Camera.app? Maybe use Camera+ for occasional processing, and things like the 'Clarity' function? ProCamera was tempting since it lets you chose the video quality, though since I only have an iPhone 4 (will pick up a 5 when it's released) it doesn't really benefit me at all right now

Thanks

You can easily get up to 500,000 after you "get" the game.

Btw, I think new star soccer belongs in this thread. I've never encountered a gaming crack as crazy as that game.

:( no it doesn't. This thread is for apps and there are many other threads for iOS games—which I purposely avoid. Now you have infected this thread and I've spent the last 3 hrs playing new star soccer. Shame on you!

playing for alders in eng L2. Teammates never read my clever passes *sigh*

Oh should probably mention since I don't see it on the list - Logmein apparently released a free version of their app for the iPad. Not sure of all the differences, but deserves a mention.

I'm looking to get an app for Wikipedia access offline. Anyone know of what's out there/best one for the money? The ones i've seen are pretty expensive.

Thanks srrucks, I'm going to update the OP soon :)

Has anyone used ACDSee Camera Flash? Looks like a great alternative to the 'Clarity' feature of Camera+ (although it does add yet more confusion with regards to how many apps to have on my phone relating to photography, agh!)

As a new iPad owner, I'm extremely grateful this thread exists. I've heard a lot about Flipboard. About to try it out for the first time.

Any other standout must-haves I should have right away before I either wait for the update to the OP or begin reading the 25 pages of this thread? :)

In accordance with above recommendations, I've been giving Cinemagram a run on my iPhone. Really fun app, it makes you think of creative ways in which you can use it.

Not sure if it's been answered or if anything's changed, but what's the best writing app for documents? I'm leaning towards Pages, but I'm not sure if there's anything out there that's similar to MS Word.

Thanks!

I know this has been covered a million times here but what is the best Comic reader for iPad?
I heard comixology is the best if you want a store to buy the comics in as well, which is handy but I also want just the best comic reading experience even if I import the comics from elsewhere.

Watching that smashcomic video a page or two back.. that looks really nice.

A couple of people here so far seems to like Smash. I'm tempted to buy it, as well. I'm currently using Comic Flow. It's free, but pretty barebones. No store or any organization features.

Yeah, I'm just making a list of apps to buy for my new iPad tomorrow.
I see in the reviews of Smash that not only does it not support the new iPad but that it crashes out on it? Anyone experience that?

So here is my shopping list

Tweetbot for iPad
Reeder for iPad
instacast HD
Smash comics
iPhoto
Garageband
Instapaper

That seems to be more or less everything I need. Anything I'm missing?

Is AvplayerHD really that much better than AirVideo? The main difference is that it decodes the video on the iDevice itself rather than transcoding it on my Mac and then sending a quicktime compatible file to the iPad/iPhone, right? I read in the reviews that it doesn't work well with 1080p videos.

Cool. Well I already have AirVideo. Why is everyone saying AvplayHD is supposedly so much better then?

Has anyone downloaded Smash yet? Impressions?
I definitely recommend it. Though tbh, when I get my new iPad, what I use will all depend on which has retina support first. I was using Comic Zeal a lot, but Smash is pretty great (mostly using it on iPhone for now).

Has anyone tried out Panamp? It seems like an amazing iPod replacement app, watched a YT video for it and I am really impressed. It has everything I wish the stock music app had.

Wondering if anyone has played with it yet.

Regarding flipboard, it feels a bit clunky to customise feeds and so on. Does anyone have any twitter or rss feeds that work well with flipboard?

my favorite ipad apps

CNBC realtime - realtime stock market update and videos

Bloomberg TV - live bloomberg TV

Xfinity TV -interactive cable guide

TurboTax - great easy way to do turbotax

Mercury News - daily paper. I think this is in the newsstand section

Houzz - interior design photo book

Twitter - best way I've found to use twitter

Well, ComicGlass is completely retina compliant right now, still the only comic reader with that distinction. Probably the best in class too.

But I LOVE the Auto-Zoom feature of Smash. I'm so hooked on it that I'm not sure what to do if if isn't updated to work in retina soon. Must... have... auto... zoom!

Can someone recommend a good todo list app? I'm not looking for something sophisticated (e.g. no need for setting priority, extra notes for tasks), but what I want is to be able to select pre-entered tasks rather than type every time. That is, if 9/10 of tasks will be the same day to day, I'd like to be able to just add those from some list that populates with already entered tasks, or a list I created specifically for the job.

Finally got Flipboard setup to where I need it. Really is a great one stop place for all news/twitter information.

Love the UI design and how it handles pictures embedded in news stores and tweets.

Does Viggle give you endless ads or steal your information?

I'm slightly intrigued.

Nope. The ads are all user initiated. When you open the app you are greeted with a screen that says "tap here to check in". You can do that if you are watching a show, otherwise you can click "what's on" to cycle through tv shows Viggle is featuring as on now or starting soon, and also to look for ads to play. There is also some social stuff like you can go to IMDB pages or Facebook/Twitter pages for a show, as well as see set reminders for when the show is airing so you can check in and more. It is really cool, I have never received any unsolicited emails from Viggle. Just try it, it is pretty addicting and has me all day long trying to get points (because I hope to buy an iPad from these Best Buy gift cards).

Is there a really good iPad app for instant messaging? That's like the one thing I'm missing right now.

I asked this in the iOS gaming thread, but I figure this is the best place to ask: I'm looking to watch flash videos on my iPad (and iPhone too, but iPad is more important) and was wondering if any of you do the same? Right now it looks like my options are the Skyfire browser ($5 x 2), another browser I can't remember off the top of my head that starts with an O I think ($5 x 2), or this new Skyfire program where you email them the URL that has the flash video and they get it running for you ($2 universal).

Any experience with any of them (or something else)?

I don't necessarily watch flash videos on my iPad, but I did just buy AVPlayerHD for the iPad, and it plays FLV. I'm happy to report that the app works pretty damn well. I loaded up a 720p MKV movie and TV episode and it played both without a hitch.

AVPlayerHD - $2.99

I only use messaging apps on my iPhone, since it is always with me.

I use beejiveIM which is really good and well worth the money for me.

They have an iPad version which probably is as good as the iPhone version

http://www.beejive.com/ipad/
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/beejiveim-for-ipad/id372269251?mt=8&ls=1

though there seems to be a problem with the iPad version if you look at the ratings

Try iSwifter. I've been testing it out on Jtv and its working surprisingly well.

Free to try.

I prefer iSwifter because it's the full browser experience. Chat, video quality options, ect.
It's the same price (actually cheaper if you consider jtv's HD app) yet you can also use it for any flash site or game. No noticeable lag either which is impressive. Check it out if you have the time. I am still open to suggestions but this the best option I've found so far.

Actually, it has WebDAV support, so just fire up your client and you can drag and drop entire folders, rename them, move them, etc. You can sort files like you can on your OS. I'm not finding this power of organization on any of the other apps yet.

The one thing I'm missing too. Would love a Retina IM app with push and all the trimmings right now.

"imo" is all you need.

Smash is a goddam waste of money. No manga (right-to-left) mode. No horizontal mode. Do you people even read comics? I honestly don't understand why anybody would care about organization and streaming features when the reading experience is so bad. And Smash's headline feature is that gimmicky zoom-in nonsense. Why would anybody want that on a comic not specifically designed for it? Moreover, on a new iPad with retina display, it's worthless.

What I want in a comic app:
  • Displays comics full screen, auto-resized to fit screen, with black borders where appropriate.
  • Optional left-to-right (loads at top left) and manga mode (right-to-left, loads at top right)
  • Simple page turning and transitions (slide to next page is fine), cached next and previous pages and option to jump to any page in comic.
  • Autorotate to landscape for big page spreads. It should automatically decide which orientation is best for the page and switch to that
  • Option for double page view (I might try this out more often on the retina display iPad)

I don't give a fuck about wooden shelves and WebDAV if the comic app can't handle the basics.

Yeah Smash has potential, but Comic Glass is king. It's a little goofy looking at first, but it has all the options anybody could need (and it has themes, so theoretically it could look better).

Haters gonna hate (the reader isn't "SO BAD"). Now what do you mean by no horizontal mode? And not everyone reads manga/gives a shit about right-to-left capabilities. Oh, and the zoom feature isn't gimmicky. Pretty useful imo.

I agree with your list, but a big deal for me is organization as well.

OK, I bought Panamp ($3). This app is fucking GREAT. Still could use some improvement with additional features, but even at this point, i'm going to be using it as a replacement to the stock-music app.

Some screens (click for demo vid);

I've been looking for something like this for a while now, and the queueing stuff is just what I wanted. The gestures are pretty awesome too (two finger slide for volume control).

I wrote a review on the app page of stuff I think could be added and improved, but nevertheless it's a great start to becoming the perfect default music app replacement. Hope it keeps getting better.
