So I have the original VLC app that was temporarily available on the App Store two years back, but I get no audio from my vids that are copied over to my (new) iPad.

Is the current video playback utility of choice Video Stream as the OP says?

Or the newer VLC app, VLC Stream?

I really don't feel like converting shit on my PC/Mac first.

Boy I thought the new sync features in Tweetbot would be useless for me but it's really nice to have Tweetbot go right back to where I was in the timeline when someone in my stream posts a 4000x4000 picture and Tweetbot crashes.

I use an app called Goodplayer, by Hustmobile. It plays absolutely everything you can think of perfectly and its updated frequently with new features and improvements. Has document sharing and you can add videos via wifi in your browser without iTunes.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- A new app hit the iTunes store Friday morning that your carrier probably isn't too thrilled about.

It's called CarrierCompare. Developed by Boston-based startup SwayMarkets, it allows you to see which carrier offers the best service for your iPhone in any given location.

The crowd-sourced app is simple to use. After you touch the start screen, the app takes about 15 seconds to analyze your network for signal strength, response time and speed. It then compares your result with other nearby results on the other two national carriers' networks.

The display is intuitive, telling you where your carrier ranks compared to the competition.

Thankfully, it doesn't look like it's region restricted, either. Working fine here in Australia (though the nearest comparisons are 10,000 and 2,000 feet away atm :( ).

AVPlayer HD is what I use, it costs like a buck I think but it has been good to me so far. I stopped using VLC a long time ago.

Get your full-featured MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint on.

It's legit, it works with Dropbox, it works well, and it's completely free.

Can't recommend it highly enough for anyone who needs access to the real Word/Excel/PPT apps.

and it's completely free?

:O

this may push me towards getting an iPad sooner.

I already have my entire documents folder synced with Dropbox. Holy moly.

How are those keyboard attachements for the iPad?

My favorite discovery of the day:

With iCab Mobile (and presumably Atromic and Perfect Browser and any other browser that has a built in Downloads folder), I can download images and upload them to Imageshack right in the browser through their imageshack.us website.

No more trying to work with an upload manager or the Dropbox public folder. Very happy about that.

But yea, glad I could pass CloudOn to the rest of you guys. It really works. <3 <3 <3 What's really nice about it is that it automatically saves, so if the app crashes or if you switch to another app and come back, it'll all be there. No need to ever worry about saving.

Can someone tell me what this is?

I,m on my iPad, and it takes me to the store and simple says 'request cannot be completed'.

Just a name for the apps would suffice.

Edit: awesome, quoting for the win...is it cloudon ?

Can you create new files with the program, or does it only allow you to open and modify already existing files?

Yeah, CloudOn http://www.cloudon.com/

The videos make it look very slick. How do they make any sort of money without ads? I assume it's only free for a limited time?

CloudOn looks like crap on the new iPad.

Not sure how trustworthy it is and how long it'll be on the store. Wasn't there something similar to this before that got banned?

Apple should recognize your apple id is tied to an iPhone and an iPad and allow you to view iPad apps in the AppStore on your phone.

I have tried iCab, Atomic, Safari, and Dolphin HD for browsers and found Dolphin to be by far the fastest at rendering pages, and Atomic the best for full screen browsing with gestures. Any others I should try? I haven't found the one that is fast and featured yet...

I like Dolphin the best because it's the only browser I've encountered that lets you stream audio in the background. So I stream my language tapes in Dolphin while I browse GAF using Safari :p

Yeah, I really like Dolphin, the only issue I have is in full screen mode there are no gesture controls. You can do their letter drawing to perform actions, but that isn't very quick to use for easy things like reload. On Aromic I can use 2 fingers to swipe down and it reloads.

Atomic and Dolphin are my main two, each does something different well though.

Are there any video players that can playback local or streamed videos at 1080p well? 1080p MP4 files should be no problem, but what about MKV and other formats?

Pocket's home page gives you horizontal scrollbars if your browser width is less than 1300px. It took me forever to find the login button. Daft.

Read It Later got a revamp, goes free and is now called Pocket:

This actually looks really, really good. Just watched the Verge video; http://youtu.be/q1iwpsNr4-U

Can't wait to try it out, the tags and image/vid sorting options seem like something i'd actually use as well.

New to iOS and just discovered Flipboard. LOVE IT. OP says it's iPad only, but that's not correct.
It used to be, and the OP hasn't been updated in quite some time.

yeah, was surprised to read about the readitlater rebadge with my app updates; just fired up itunes so will update shortly. looking forward to the changes. I really quite like readitlater but btw the wifi @ home/work; I dont have use for it much. :p

Is there any way to get that pocket view on the desktop? The app page preview pics show an iMac with the pocket interface on it, but I can't find anything like that.

The iPhone version of Flipboard is terrible though. All that flipping gets annoying real fast.
Coulda fooled me. Flipping seems quicker than the usual scrolling. One of my favorite apps.

the iphone is good for ... smses, photos, mp3s, viber, skype and not much else. I don't really do much with it when I have the ipad to do everything else. screen realestate. I don't even like to use shit like snapseed on the iphone. just awful. iphoto? awful.

only okay if you don't know any better.

Works just fine.

Been using it hardcore for the last few days and it's officially met my needs for Microsoft office. I can (and do) work on existing documents in my Dropbox, create new documents that automatically save to my Dropbox, have access to the large variety of fonts that you expect with Office.

And it's fully licensed, so there are no concerns of banning or that such.

Yes, parts of the UI look fuzzy, but Office has not been scaled to Retina resolutions such that the buttons would look sharp at 2048x1536 (or whatever the resolution is). and some buttons needed to be much bigger for touch. They made that all happen without compromising the functionality or feature set people expect in Word/PowerPoint/Excel...

...all for free...

...and you're complaining? You're silly.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57...e-ipad-app-adds-pdf-viewer-and-e-mail-option/

App has been followed and its popularity noted for some time.

Again, I can't recommend CloudOn enough for people who want/need *real* Office compatibility, consistency and productivity. It does what it says it does and it's free. Until Microsoft releases an iPad version of Office, this is pretty much the best thing available. No irritiating limitations like having 5 fonts available...no concerns that something isn't going to look the same when you open it on your desktop...and no worries on how to get it off your iPad, since it saves right to Dropbox. Oh, and no space taken up on your HDD since it's basically just a VNC client (but better than Splashtop for this use).

At this point, it's just silly not to have CloudOn. If you have a BT keyboard and a need for real MS Office.

I don't even understand this comment. What in the world does wifi at home/work have to do with finding something interesting to read and having no time to do so right then?

Time-Shifted reading apps (much like a DVR) have very little to do with internet connection and more about reading articles later when I have the time or when it's convenient for me.

Woah.

Twitch.tv app got a MASSIVE UI upgrade recently. greatly impressed. Not sure if it's limited to the iPad app or not, but it looks fantastic on iPad now.

It got updated on both. I don't think there was a twitch iPad app before this update.

I'm really liking Pocket right now. I feel kinda sad for using it over readability since I do use tweetbot, but read it later / pocket is just more widely supported and has a much better UI IMO. I'm glad developers are starting to put a LOT more emphasis on UI.

Some people have low data caps and download articles for offline viewing in RIL.
