tried to use it to watch inxile's thing. kept crashing. i gave up

that's odd. I've been watching for like an hour and no issues of any kind. you have an iPad 3 don't you? maybe a reboot will fix it? idk.

also, cross-posting screens from new interface:

really well done, IMO. If you like to watch competitive gaming, you need this.

Yeah, I really like Dolphin, the only issue I have is in full screen mode there are no gesture controls. You can do their letter drawing to perform actions, but that isn't very quick to use for easy things like reload. On Aromic I can use 2 fingers to swipe down and it reloads.

Atomic and Dolphin are my main two, each does something different well though.

Atomic also supports the shake gesture so I have refresh assigned to it which somehow feels intuitive.

I now recommend iCab. I started to find Atomic constantly crashing with several tabs open. That same tab arrangement poses no issues for iCab. And it has just as many custom gestures, Dropbox saving, saving inside the app, integration with other applications, etc.

Also, iCab seems to have much better developer support than Atomic. I don't think Atomic has been updated since...December? iCab has had 5 or 6 updates between December and now...and it shows. Better interface, better stability, just about all of the same features, and some that are even nicer.

If Atomic gets a proper update, I think this conversation can be reviewed again...but as of right now, I've tried/own:

Safari
Dolphin
Atomic
iCab

iCab is best of the group. I am only sad that I can't change iCab to my default browser. I'm not a fan of everything opening in Safari, and only jailbroken devices can change the default browser.

And what about Mercury and Maven? I have them along with Safari and Dolphin. I really wish there would be some browser that combines them all, as there is too much choice and too little that differentiates.

And also Dolphin now is the only browser I still see checkerboards.

Mercury is probably better than Atomic at this point, but Mercury Pro has a built-in limitation of 10 tabs, which Atomic doesn't have. I like that in Atomic and Mercury, they show the website icon on the tab (iCab does not). Both support Dropbox downloading, so that's winning.

Maven seems fine, but lack of Dropbox integration is a show-stopper for me. Being able to transfer downloaded shit through iTunes is for suckers in 2012. It supports unlimited tabs which is a plus over Mercury, and the jog dial seems pretty cool. But no Dropbox support = no buy for me. If downloading isn't a point of interest, Maven is probably a little better than Mercury. Infinite tabs, track pad and jog dial are really cool.

Based on my priorities (Dropbox integration + built-in file manager/downloader + as many tabs as I want + good, customizable gesture support + ad blocking):

iCab > Mercury > Atomic > Maven > Dolphin > Safari

Atomic would move up the list if it was better supported.

twitch app is a complete mess. Try searching for something...then clicking on what it finds. Doesn't even work.

App crashes nonstop - when it doesn't crash it's constantly rebuffering the stream...app drives me nuts

Not to mention half of the screen is now being used up by chat

Thanks for the overview. I believe I bought iCab a while back so I'll have to reinstall and check it out. Agreed about the default browser thing; I'm jailbroken and it is nice being able to change it. Don't understand why Apple doesn't allow it without resorting to that though.

I know many on GAF hate the "piss" filters and effects that we see in photos using Instagram and the like but I recently got an app called Pixlromatic which I believe is based on a web version going by the same name and it kills any other app I've tried in terms of effects and filters. It's free and has a 99 cent in app purchase to unlock hundreds more effects and filters which I feel is worth it. I'm sure it's been mentioned before in this thread but didn't see it listed in the OP (it should be), so thought I'd mention it. Free version is great as is without the extra filters/effect 99 cent pack so worth a shot.

Regarding Pocket new Read It Later: is it working ok for you, guys?
I'm having some troubles. For example, the view "all items + home" won't show any articles (despite I have lots of them).Itt will stay in a white screen with the loading wheel spinning forever.
However, if I change the filter to "articles", or if I go to the archived links instead of "home", it will show articles alright.

Any idea?

I also checked through my computer the pocket homepage, and from there I can see everything just fine as well.
BTW, this is happening in both my iPhone and my iPad.

I just checked, and it's working perfectly.

I just got stickystudy to help with my language studies (specifically chinese). Love the interface. Just beautiful. There is dropbox integration for sync between devices too, but I haven't tried that.

I much prefer Pleco's flashcard function. Much more full-featured, and the varied SRS options and different testing options are amazing.

The app you mentioned is gorgeous (just checked out the free version) but it appears that you can only have the test show you the character and you guess the pronunciation. I prefer seeing the pinyin or definition and then guessing the character.

I also like that Pleco's has responses other than "correct" or "incorrect" ("almost remembered", "forgot", etc.) for more nuanced repetition algorithms. All this on top of being integrated into the iPhone's best Chinese dictionary <3

Holy crap. I have pleco. But I didn't know that it has flashcard function. Thanks for the heads up.

One thing that I like most about sticky study is this layout.

I thought more flashcard app should copy this.

It's an IAP add-on but it's well worth it. As is the optical character recognition IAP. And the stroke order diagrams IAP.

App of the forever.

I have the optical character recognition. Helped me quite a bit during my travels. :). Have you seen bing on w7 take on the OCR? I want that on pleco.

You can do this on sticky note. That's how I use mine. I use the definition then guess the pinyin and character.

Yea. The bing translate app is quite something. It's free too. You can download language packs. Would so useful for travelling. I want the equivalent of that in iOS. The bing app is actually more useful than iOS' wordlens, because it doesn't try to remove the text like wordlens. It is more practical.

Am I an idiot or does the iPhone YouTube app suck? If a video has a 1080p/720p version, it tires to load that resolution no matter what, every time. I can't change it to 360/480 (i.e. YT prime)?

This is a pain in the ass, it makes watching most videos useless since it takes so long for my internet connection to try to load them up, that I might as well just watch on my laptop... Solutions?

There's no good alternative apps that do a better job? After all these years you'd think someone would've gotten around to it by now...

Snapseed just received an update with retina support among other things, as well as Instagram exporting. Also only $4.99 (limited time?) as opposed to $14.99 iirc.

Cross posting:

I am looking for the best app that will allow me to store files locally. I am specifically looking for a way to load the ipad with pdf's or presentation software files.

I cannot use the external cloud for security reasons. Optimally, I could use wifi to browse files to transfer for local storage onto the ipad. All viewing of files would be without dependence on network connectivity.

thanks.

Looks like GoodReader may be good to store and view pdfs locally? Seems like the Kindle app stores them locally as well.

Maybe the Filebrowser app for network grabbing files?

ProTube but you gotta be jailbroken to get it. $1.49 on Cydia. Dev even makes an "open in ProTube" plugin that can direct any YouTube link to open in the app so as to avoid the official iOS one.

With its database of over a million foods, a barcode scanner, and a recipe calculator, the My Fitness Pal app makes itself indispensible to those looking to track their fitness goals. It will not only track calories but all nutrients so you can see how balanced a diet you do (or don’t) have. Users can also keep track of your daily exercises, weight, goals and more.

Not exactly a new app, but just posting it for those who don't know about it.

No radar? Why use this over the stock app?

I'm also wondering how this adds functionality because I thought Apple denied apps that didn't provide a service the iOS could already perform. :)

My favorite free weather app is still AccuWeather. Quick/clean weather information, radar, and is more stable than the other free weather apps I tried.

Just use YouTube.com. You can toggle the HD option.

iOS 6 is more likely to fix the youtube app by removing the youtube app.

That would be crazy. Though the YouTube app is already taken off Chinese iOS devices.

And they demonstrated a Vimeo video download for the LTE iPad keynote demonstration instead of using YouTube.

it would be a little crazy yeah. but you know what I think would be even more crazy and would affect me more (in a negative way) than removing the youtube app?

removing google maps data and google street view.

yet most everything thinks that's a done deal at this point. in my mind, losing street view is a bigger loss than the youtube app, which can be implemented much more easily in a webapp.

If Apple is going to divorce itself from google data over the next few years as people think they will, there's going to be a few nasty bumps along the way.

Although still not 100% ideal, the easy solution would be for Apple to put the old Google apps (Maps, YouTube) on the App Store for people who need them.

But then Apple still needs to have that relationship with Google for the data. the only reason (from Apple’s POV) to drop the apps is to drop the relationship. so, no, I don’t see Apple offering their apps up on the store.

Google, of course, could build their apps. but then they need to weigh the pros of the eyes of iOS customers vs a selling point of Android handsets.

The size difference is huge. 645 shot is 12mb and normal is 3mb. My 4S starts to get hot pretty quickly and the live view can get pretty laggy. The 645 shot is also pretty noisy but that's expected I think.

Not the greatest shots but it's the only thing I could do right now.

Is there a better Google Reader app for the iPad than Reeder? I hate the thumbnail view, except for two feeds it only shows very tiny favicons.

I'm looking for something that is GR only; for feed/news discovery I've already got Zite and Flipboard.

I wouldn't buy that camera app. not sure but from the shot, but it was blurrie but yeah, I don't think ITS THAT MUCH BETTER.

might update appraisal later. But heres a quick test. colour balance is also off.

fullsize crop. http://i.minus.com/ibh0hk9fxjzJKD.jpg

did another test while typing.

http://i.minus.com/iAqiGnjbluKS7.jpg

here it is. again; left is this "app", right is apples. iphone4s here. I think the default cam is properly exposed/WB is right and less grainy.

so

um, yeah. YMMV.
