Anyone have any recommendations for a good budgeting/personal finance app?
I'm in the UK, so Mint (which seems to easily be the best) is unfortunately not much good. Preferably something universal that syncs between devices. Everything that's free or has free versions I've tried has been garbage.

What's that you say? An opportunity to plug the Budgeting OT? ;)

I use YNAB personally, though I haven't tried their mobile app. It's a great program, and the mobile version has some good reviews. Note that YNAB is a zero-based budgeting system (see the thread linked above for more info), so if that's not your thing, avoid.

Newsify An RSS reader gone free at the moment. It has thumnails when looking at the article list, something I wish reader had:

What's the best app out there if I want rain sounds when sleeping? I'm currently using Sleepmaker Rain and it's quite alright, though I'm wondering if GAF knows something about this very specific niche.

Oh! And has anyone paid for Sleepmaker? Does it add anything worthwhile? The features don't sound that interesting.

^Beautiful. I'm not a big fan of metro UI but I love that look on a tablet for simplifying the UI of specific utilities.

did you not activate find my ipad?

I thought I did, but apparently I didn't. I don't even know why I'd have to activate it myself, that should be on by default. But whatever, I still have my OG iPad and now I'll probably wait for the next one in 2013. Can't wait.

oh god, my sides. Metro has no business on the iPad.

What does that even mean? Hiding Apple's iOS UI is the best thing every developer can do with their apps.

Well when you first turn the iPad on it asks if you want to activate find my iPad. You must have selected no.

That doesn't make any sense. There's no reason why I wouldn't activate it and like I said, it should be just on by default. Whatever, I'm not even mad or trying to blame anyone. It's 100% my fault and I can live with it. It's just an iPad.

If you restored from backup, and never had activated it previously, it wouldn't have been on, I think. It wasn't available as a standard iPad feature until iOS 4.2, I think.

Oh, this makes sense now. Like I said, I know it's my fault and I know where I lost it. It just kinda sucks that my budget is already planed for the next 4-5 months and unless I find a really good deal, I'll just wait for the new iPad.

Does it work with iTunes Match?

I hate the stock iPad music player.

I'm not in love with the iPad music app, but it's a massive improvement over the one in iOS 4.

What'd you do, just leave it somewhere?

Shit, I'd be mad, I spent 700 for this thing. (well actually only 400 but it should have been 7)

Yep, I left it somewhere. Really stupid, but it is what happened and there's nothing I can do about it. It was the 32 GB WiFi black, so it's only 600 for me. Problem is, I don't see the point in getting an iOS product 6 months after release, so I'll have to wait for the new one next year. I'm really gonna miss the retina display and the overall performance. *sigh*

It's only been like 2 months, hasn't it?

That track 8 music player looks really nice, the only problem is the only person in our household with an ipad is my eight year old son and he doesn't have music on it. ......I may have to tell him we've been burgled :p

Just out of interest I tried http://www.rainymood.com/ on my iPhone and it works, obviously with it being flash based you don't get the rain droplets running down the screen but the sound works.

Track 8 looks really nice, but what's the probability that it will be banned from the store? I wouldn't want to buy a music player that can't be updated in the future.

One thing to keep in mind is that iOS products, especially the iPad, have a pretty absurdly high resale value right up to the announcement of the next device.

Using it. I like it more than the stock player. Not much else to be said.

Is it able to access your home sharing library? Hell, are any apps allowed to do that, or is it another forbidden API?

So can we revisit video playback?

Video Stream is on sale for $1.99 and has streaming and local playback + retina support.

Air Video, streaming but not local playback.

AvPlayer HD does local but not streaming playback.

Is there a comparison of these somewhere online? Which of these is the best choice for the new iPad as far as handling 1080p video, etc? Is it a better idea to just convert my videos to a format that works in the stock player?

dunno if there are any online comparisons, but I have been using Air Video for 3 years. When neeeded, you can always tell Air Video to convert a particular video file into an iPad format. You can then sync the converted file normally in iTunes.

So I've been testing a bunch of different RSS apps over the past few days (Feeddler, Feedly, Newsify, Byline etc.) and I think I finally came across one that seems to do it all. It's called iReadG which is a rather odd name but I guess if it does the job. There's a free (ad supported) version so it's easy to tryout.

Anyway after playing with it, here's my mini review/features that stood out to me:

- thumbnails for feeds
- 2-way sync with Google Reader
- swipe up/down, left/right or both for next/previous feed
- Reader Play
- can add, delete and manage folders from app
- offline webpage & image caching
- startup syncing or manual sync at anytime by pulling screen down
- RSS searching
- fullscreen viewing
- vertical and landscape support
- multiple font and background colors
- displays profile pic on main screen (useless but kinda cool)
- able to add feeds from within app
- supports multiple Google Reader accounts

Here's a bunch of screens showing some of the UI. *And yes I did just discover the screenshot function.*
I also took shots of the settings menu but didn't post 'em cause it took 8 screenshots to show all of them; there's that many.

Does it work with iTunes Match?
Sorry, I don't use iTunes match so I couldn't tell you. From what I can tell, it's not much more than a reskin of the regular iPod player. Like, if you swipe up to show the running apps, then left to see the volume and brightness controls, it shows the regular iPod app running instead of Track 8.

Hail to the KING baby
I'm getting Apple TV tomorrow to pair with my iPad. What are good apps for that? Here's what I gathered, please feel free to add. Pay or free doesn't matter:

-Remote
-Netflix (don't know how ATV works though am I supposed to use the app or the app from Apple TV?)
-PBS
-TED
-Showyou
-Qello

If you already have AirVideo, it works amazingly with it. Better than connecting from the Mac/PC.

Netflix is already on the AppleTV itself.

Wow track 8 looks stunning, does anyone know, or can you test it to see if you can use this with home sharing. I haven't got any music on my iPad and would prefer to stream it from my computer like you can with the standard music app.

Thanks.

Other features:

All-new Fast Pagination mode, a complete rewrite from the old pagination code that greatly improves accuracy and page-turn speed
New draggable dot bar to replace the scroll bar in pagination mode
New two-finger-swipe gesture to close an article
Full-screen now has “Auto” mode to switch to full screen after a few seconds
The subtle Twilight Sepia color tint can now be selected at any time
Added sharing to Drafts and the upcoming Quotebook 2.0
Many bugfixes and performance improvements

I've noticed the page-turn animation isn't quite as nice and buttery smooth as iBooks' is.
