Hmmm, for whatever my anecdotal evidence is worth I've been part of a cosplay crew for several years and I've never seen a community more complimentary towards each other. Might just be our different areas.

Heck I met more friend groups cosplaying then I did doing almost anything else

I find it kind of hilarious that Kill la Kill's completely absurd fantasy outfits got cosplay out so quickly. They're like more mainstream Queen's Blade outfits.

It could be regional. In my experience, I get along way better with West Coast cosplayers than East Coast. But yeah, in a big way, just...catty gossipy bullshit all the time for dumb reasons. That dumb "dramu" mentality that steams from being new to popularity. It's annoying and it's rampant. The stories I could tell you...I've been the fly on the wall in this game for a long time.
