I didn't think it was good or bad, just meh. But most people that I know and love it have some sort of empathy for Shinji or they see a reflection of themselves in him, that and the kinda controversial theme of it make it so good for some people.

6/10 for me.

What an absolute catastrophe of a show.

It takes so long for anything to make sense, and when it does, it's just too obscure and absurd to be taken seriously.

The characters are a disgrace. How the two female leads became such all time favourites are beyond me, they are barely one dimensional and treated like plot devices the whole way through.

Special mention has to go to Shinji though, i've never hated a character so much in my life.

Not just in Anime, but in all forms of media. This guy is scum. He's either whining, looking depressed or screaming.

The first thing he does in the movie is accidentally reveal Asuka's body while she's unconciouss and proceeds to masturbate then and there in the hospital room...

Dire, Dire, Dire.

The Evangelions look okay though as do the monsters.

The main character is a whiny ***

um

Well actually Shinji is likely suffering from depression and also the entire show is kind of about how nobody really gives a shit about his mental well being, they only want to use him as a tool. Its an interesting and more realistic twist on how mecha shows usually portray their young mech pilot protagonists.

Edit:nvm

Shinji and Asuka are probably two of the worst fictional characters I've had the displeasure of witnessing (in any medium). Utter trash.

Emo fag.....
Great job deconstructing the work, I highly recommend the transformers movies. Shit blows up and hot women show up, you'll love it. If your looking for an anime watch black lagoon, it's a show without any substance and shit blows up. Don't forget about tits!

Edit: okay look I get the hate with the main character but if your complaint of a show is that the characters aren't mentally stable then you are limiting yourselfs so safer viewpoints. There's alot of shit you can give Eva but that's not one of them. If you are looking for shows where the main character kicks ass and gets the girl you have literally an infinite amount of entertainment at your fingers.

this might actually be the only interesting thing shinji does in the whole story, though.

You are right it is a shit anime but eva is well liked because the theology/symbolism makes a lot of people think it is deep.

The remake movies were pretty good until 3.0 when anno decided to give everyone the finger and threw shit at a wall.

I liked the series + the all the films except (even the original budget cut eps 25+26)

But.....

3.333333333 REDO is STRAIGHT UP GARBAGE

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I find it kind of funny that people consider Shinji the worst character they have ever come across and yet there are so many other characters that are far worse because they're poorly written, have no depth, are Mary Sues, and so on and so forth. However that kid expected to save the world by his incredibly cold and abusive father who has a mental breakdown? Yeah fuck that character.

No one has to like the show but I find people go out of there way to the point they are tripping over themselves to shit on Shinji.

It's almost like the point of Shinji was to dislike him.

I honestly have trouble accepting criticism from a person if their criteria for a good, well-written or complex character is whether they liked them or not.

Way too many people equate "good character" with "badass fantasy stand-in"

If you think it was edgy or trying to be deep, I honestly don't know what to tell you other than "Sure"

As i said that Synopsis was copied from other website i don't use this kind of words, see the rest of the post.
People still say emo?
Also why did you watch all of it if you don't like it?
I have this problem with anime if i started with one i have to finish it :(

It's a show about depression and isolation on a micro and macro scale, and it has amazing design work and visuals.

The end.

One of my GOAT. Sorry you didn't like it, OP. It does seem to inspire highly emotional responses. The majority of people either love it or hate it with a passion.

Hmmm... Interesting... wording in your OP.

It's hard to believe one cannot find any kind of emotional attachment to any of the characters. They all come from a wide range of emotional backgrounds and issues which are all very human in how they're written.

The "whiny emo fag" Shinji for instance is the realistic emotional boundaries of a isolated teenager placed to a ridiculously abstract version of a mecha anime. His arc for most of the show involves a very solid building up, almost reaching typical anime hero levels, the growth of which is very easily relatable to me. Of course it doesn't last the whole series, but it's just an example.

Maybe the manga would be more to your liking OP? It's more typically shonen and thus could be easier (in some ways) to take.

Edit: Just saw your edit OP. While I question you copy pasting such a thing, please ignore me making fun of your vocab.

As an aside, feel free to post about Evangelion in the OT I made. I'm sure posters there are willing to discuss even with detractors:

Congratulations, someone finally said the right thing.

EVA is so overrated it's confounding how it stands the test of time.

I understood the show perfectly. The last two episodes deviate to a message about self-esteem and mental health.

Misato gives a very succinct summary of the Human Instrumentality project in the last ep.

This might help:

The biggest source of lore outside the series are:

The Red Cross Book - a glossary distributed at special showings of EoE

the Classified Information entries made for a PSP game

That's a valid opinion for the Rebuild 3 movie.

Is that how people like OP view the rest of the series?

Yup, "too deep, you don't get it" just go read some books, watch some movies, you beloved anime is just a wonderland of cliches that tries too hard.

Well no, everyone hates Joffrey but he is a fantastic character, because the conflicts he causes make Game of Thrones a great story. Shinji is just unbelievable and tedious. What's the point of tedious entertainment?

I have never in my life met anyone or heard of anyone liking the show because they said it was "deep" so I will never understand that criticism, personally. Also, fuck the haters. Shinji is the best. That kid deserves to be happy.

In what ways is he unbelievable or tedious?

I'm not sure you should be holding Jeffrey up as an example of a good well-written character.
