New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

I've wanted to get more into board gaming for awhile and I played a bunch of different games with my friend last week. We played Ticket to Ride, Qwirkle, Love Letter, and Sheriff of Nottingham. I enjoyed all of them and am looking to buy a few games of my own in the future.

Are card games considered board games?

Broadly speaking, yes. But technically board games have to include a board where tokens of some kind are placed. I'd say most people use the term board game to represent some kind of tabletop game that is a self-contained experience. So that ignores things like Magic : the Gathering, a deck of cards, or DnD campaigns.

Played two more games of Flashpoint today with just the SO, still with the basic rules. The second side of the board proved to be more of a challenge, or at least the variables lined up so.

Also we played our first game of Among the Stars. That so did not take 30 minutes to play. O_O I think we spent 1.5 to 2 hours. We were learning the game and might have flubbed some of the rules. We did use the updated 2 player variantpublished with the Ambassadors expansion.

I read through the Pandemic Legacy rules and it seems like it's going to be a good time. As an aside, why anybody would consider playing this "Non-Legacy" is beyond me. The permanent changes to the game is the whole point. If you want a game that resets every time just play regular ass Pandemic.

Any of you here back the Connan game?

I came close to backing it with a late backer pledge, but The Others hit and I backed that instead. It looks neat, though so I'll keep an eye on it when it gets released.

You should consider playing the advanced game soon. It adds a lot to the gameplay while not adding that much to the complexity.

It will go faster next time. The game is as fast to play as 7 Wonders once you are familiar with it.

Curious about Legacy with 2 -- trying to decide whether to play it with just my wife, or with another couple. In the latter case it will take a good deal longer of course.

I'm looking at Betrayal at House on the Hill but I'm not so fond of the miniatures. Any good resources for finding miniatures to customize a game? I saw on BGG someone used Scooby-Doo miniatures but not quite what I want.

Edit: On second thought, reading mixed things about it as a two player game.

Won our first three games of PL. stopping for the night. Game is great. Can't wait to talk about it. We stumbled upon a great combo. We just barely beat March. Stickers are the future of gaming!

Played my first game of Lost Cities. We both misunderstood the scoring. They got a 55 and I ended up with -55. T_T

One of my daughter's favourites, though we play without the special cards, just the straight numbers.

Gah, I so want to play this. How long is each individual 'game' likely to take with experienced Pandemic players?

I saw Mystery! Motive for Murder in Barnes & Noble today. I sort of wanted it, thinking it was some sort of deduction-ish game, but I found this:

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1438827/designers-diary-2

It's apparently more of a race game where you're betting on certain outcomes and influencing them. Instead of someone actually being guilty of a crime, you're just playing cards / tokens to give a particular suspect higher motive than anyone else.

Played Lost Cities with my SO's sister and she ended up damaging one of the cards. :( From the way she was handling the cards it was inevitable. I have OCD so that got under my skin. I'd sleeve all cards for my games if doing so was within my budget.

I got invited to be the fourth player in a game of Pandemic Legacy with three friends who live together. I feel kind of bad for holding them back since it'll be a while before I'm over there again.

Ugh my cousin's girlfriend was absent-mindedly flexing my Love Letter cards today but luckily didn't crease any.

The new edition of Fury of Dracula looks interesting but it doesn't seem like it will make it in time for Halloween.

Decided to get some Mayday Games card sleeves for Lost Cities, Among the Stars, and Temple of Elemental Evil. It seems like it can be a gamble with their quality control, so I hope I luck out.

I use Ultra Pro Matte Clear exclusively. I have had nothing but good things to say about their sleeves. I've sleeved all of Mage Knight, almost all of the currently available LotR LCG, all of Shadows of Brimstone, and every Ascension expansion. People who say Ultra Pro aren't good must have some bad luck...I've got over 5000 sleeves and never had a bad one.

E: Also sleeved sith UP when I played Magic. It's nice that I can get a box of 600 for 30 bucks on Amazon.

Ugh I hate it when that happens. I sleeve all of the cards in the games I play a lot. Had a game night playing Mascarade one time, and one of my friends kept on picking up the cards with her damn fingernails. Not only did it damage some of the cards, but it also gave them visible marks for a game that requires secrecy.

I think it's just their budget sleeves that I have seen mentioned as being a gamble.

D: Luckily in my case she didn't have long fingernails.

You might have to invest in a playmat. It makes picking up cards so much easier because you can press into the surface around it

If you have issues, make sure you follow the instructions to email them. I think they're supposed to have great customer service / support.

I should have done that but may have waited too long since I had a few sleeves that weren't perfect. I think they also offer a free pack of sleeves if you fill out a survey about your experience.

Any "expert" Mage Knight players here? I've played 5 games and still can't wrap my head around how people are able to take down dens, keeps, towers, etc within the first day. I'm starting day 3 of my latest solo game and am on track to defeat 0 cities. I had no available units until day 2 (all keep or tower, no village), so I had no way of generating early advantage for anything but the most basic orc. On top of that, my map is a path from hell in that I am required to deal with high move terrain to get ANYWHERE. Do I chalk this up to bad draw luck, or are pro players able to still take this garbage down?

Don't be afraid to take wounds early; you have the entire rest of the game to clear them.

Anyone pick up AGOT LCG 2nd Ed? I'm itching to pick it up since I want to start from the ground floor and the game looks interesting and fun. Only downer is my primary gaming partner is my wife and she's not keen on CCG type card games at all. (I've tried to rope her into LOTR LCG numerous times and failed every time). I can probably get a buddy to try it out who used to play Magic but then it's just 1v1 and I'm not sure how into the meta he'll be.

I'm interested in any impressions from GAF'ers who may have jumped in.

I really wanted this, but now I put it on hold as it doesn't seem that great with just 2 players (which is how I play most of my games). I'll just manage with Letters from Whitechapel (which is awesome with 2 imo)

Yeah, Letters works great with just two.

Like someone said take wounds is acceptable. I usually try taking out the roaming orcs and level up quickly. I also used to play conservatively but taking down keeps, raid the village and burning down monastery to level up are all acceptable. Remember you are a MageKnight a conqueror and invader. I usually looks at the board and maximize my movement and combat before day end. Range attack is also good to have as you can take out enemy before they hit you.

Wow. Did you jump into the game big time? :)

I remember you were asking about how the game was awhile back. I take it you like it?

Yeah, I love it. I'm not really building my own decks yet. I'm using some net decks to get a handle on how various cards play well together. Once I've got a good feel for things, I'm going to start with some themed decks that I've been wanting to tinker with. I love that it's cooperative and zero competitive. I also enjoy how MtG drafty it feels - it's like every AP and expansion is simply building your personal oversized cube.

Regarding MK, I have come to terms with the wounds thing. But I guess I just need to learn how to be more efficient on round 1. By round 2, I'm able to start doing things, but this past game I just had terrible unit and tile draws (and thus no units) until start of night 2. I also need to focus on how to deal with elemental damage early so that I can snag a Mage Tower.

But hot damn do I love this game. I haven't even touched the expansion because the additional complexities (and rule changes, ha) aren't worth it to me yet.

Oh and the Tezla...Did Wiz kids ever address the bullshit token issue for that game?

I really want to get one of those types of games (hidden movement) but the SO isn't going to touch anything with Jack the Ripper. I showed them Specter Ops and they were receptive so I may get that to scratch the itch.

Aw, man, you're killing me! There was late-pledging for Conan as recently as a few weeks ago?! That's my most-wanted missed KS game... :(

You mean the miscolored print? I just bought Tezla and Krang this past month or so and both of them still suck in that regard. Also the manual is still miscut and busted up in both boxes. I feel like maybe WizKids should not be allowed to print such a good game...

(To be fair, they may have been old distributor stock that my LGS found and not actual reprints. That part is hard to tell.)

My tokens are all slightly smaller, so I'll know when I'm drawing a base game token vs Tezla token. It sucks.

Played my first two games of Pandemic Legacy last night. We barely won our second month, like literally 1 turn from losing and I was able to top deck the card we needed to win. The game is awesome and I can't wait to see what else they have in store.

Sorry to say, but yeah you just missed out. They kept the pledge manager open for a good month.

Yes, they open the pledge to everyone as late as last week I think. I got an email from them several days ago to complete my pledge or there will be delayed in my shipment. I back Conan instead of the Others .... I watch the game play and I find Conan to be more interesting.

Ricky Royal, also has me edged closer to backing 7th Continent ...

Tezla have big quality issues especially with difference size cards and the monster tokens. It also suffered from cards being difference colors. I don't sleeve my cards, and while I can deal with difference disk sizes by using draw bag, the card size is the deal breaker for now until I decided to sleeve all my cards ...

As for Krang I don't know if what you got is a reprinted. There were rumors that it will get reprint. I got it off Amazon last month when a dealer in UK got some but many people said, they just found an old deadstock. I finally got it last week but the box was completely smashed in .... though the contents were mostly undamaged except for the manual.

Yeah, it's a shame that such a good game is being publish by WizKids.

First two months of spoilers insides:
I switched from Dispatch to Quarantine in February and created a rival relationship with the scientist. We had had red mutate previously and I was using the containment tokens in Asia. The ability to take your rivals played and discarded cards by discarding two of your own is amazing and saved our bacon! How is your first couple months playing out?

I was playing the researcher and switched to the containment specialist. Our red disease is the mutated one as well. For Februray we had black positively mutated at level 1 so we kind of ignored it then all hell broke loose. We were down to 1 black cube and the dispatcher had four black cards and was standing in Moscow. I top decked Istanbul and the dispatcher was able to move to Istanbul, move me to her and I was able to give her the Istanbul card and have her cure for the win. We had one black cube left. So far we have two diseases that we eradicated so we have two positive mutations. We also added a permanent research station and the unfunded event that lets us discard cards to remove cubes.

Really tempting to hit those spoiler tags for Legacy lol. I put in an order for it over the weekend. Didn't realize it would be out so soon. Would you guys say it's fine to play with 2 players or should I get 4? If it were regular pandemic I'd split 2 roles amongst 2 people but I dunno if Legacy changes that.

I played it with three last night and planning on playing with two for most of the campaign. On first impression, I don't see why it wouldn't work well with just two. It ultimately plays a lot like Pandemic (so far) and that plays just fine with two.

Agreed with Joey said. I would even go so far to say that there is a new small advantage for running less than 4 characters beyond the overall advantage of starting with more cards that has been there from the original. It is extremely small though, so if you like playing multi hand with 2 players you won't feel penalized.

Played Ra last night for the first time, and I loved it. Damn, we really should recommend more 'old' games, especially to new boardgamers.
