New Dragon Ball TV Series Announced: Dragon Ball Super

Everyone in the show can be useful the situation just needs to call for it.

Sure they 'can', that doesn't mean it's going to happen. They can't all have a big Mr Stan 'save the Earth without fighting' moment.

I think the most they do is get hit by main villains before other fighters step in.

It's not like every power up and transformation is directly tied to the SSJs though. Things like Fusion or the elder kais power up could have been used by the human characters if they still had been part of the main cast by the Buu Saga. Of course, they weren't so we got only SSJs getting even more power ups separate from the SSJ transformations. If the main cast remains similar to the composition from RoF though (with Goten and Trunks sidelined), there's space to give power ups to the humans.

On the other hand, I guess there's a chance that Goten and Trunks weren't in that movie because they'll be heavily featured in the new show, probably with older looking designs...

IIRC I believe the backstory for Dragonball Online had all the humans getting a "power-boost" thanks to Gohan's research, including how to fly becoming common knowledge and such. Would like to see that become a plot point here too.

That's referencing the general population. In DBO, Gohan writes a book about ki which becomes a best seller and a while after that a large part of humanity starts controlling ki. It doesn't mean a boost for people like Kuririn and Tenshinhan.

I would definitely like to see Gohan return as a powerful character once he gets furious. Such a wasted potential after the Cell saga. :(

So not worth it
If Gohan is going to get really strong I want him to actually earn it.

He earned it, come on now.

1. He was abducted as a toddler by Piccolo and got harsh training.
2. He travelled across the universe to fight Freeza.
3. He trained for years to fight the Androids.
4. Another year in the Time Chamber to fight Cell.

He only stopped training after he bested Cell and peace returned to Earth, since there was no pressing need for him to train and he was a teenager who just wanted to have a normal live in school like everyone else.

So the 30th Anniversary site has been teasing something for reveal on May 9th (Piccolo Day) so we may or may not get something DBS related tonight or tomorrow.

Why? She's a fantastic voice actor, understands the character perfectly and is highly respected by the Japanese fanbase.

no matter the quality of the acting in her other roles (or even her quality as kid goku), in adult goku she just doesn't remotely sound right.

it would be like if Betty White voiced darth vader :/ Sure it might work on some level, but deep down we would know it should have been voiced by someone like james earl jones :p

beyond all of that her goku voice just sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me thus dbz is unwatchable in japanese for me... which puts it in some very rare company as I watch a lot of subbed anime.

Complely agreed. I watch most anime with their original dub, but DBZ is unbearable. Goku just sounds too ridiculous.

That's again a different matter. You obviously don't like the voice, but it doesn't mean the same as straight out dismissing it. She is Goku to a lot of people in Japan (including Toriyama) and elsewhere (including Sean Schemmel). This fact of course doesn't matter if one legitimately finds the voice annoying, by to say having such a good actor that gets the character so well is NEVER a good thing is ridiculous.

Well, that is the joke.

Yeah, fuck all other Goku voices. Nozawa is Goku. This old lady kicks your ass with a Genkidama

I put the people complaining about Goku's voice in the same category as Faulconer supporters over the original music...

Nozawa is Goku, indeed. A "mature" voice or whatever the complaint is wouldn't work on Goku at all, his voice is such a big part of his character.

it works just fine in the dub. I would go as far to say that if goku had been voiced with a little boy voice like he got in japan in america most people wouldn't know what dbz is in english speaking countries Americans would have just turned it off, and it would likely be more obscure than one piece at this point.

for the record I am in no way saying that they need to change the japanese voice. I understand that the japanese like her for goku, just saying I can't remotely watch it and wish that I could tell apart goku and gohan in japanese without looking at the screen. luckily dbz has a good following so I don't have to worry about dbs never getting a dub.

Goku's japanese voice is horrible. Main reason I prefer the dubs. I grew up with the more manly voice and hell, here we have the defender of the universe with a shitty, non-threatening voice. I think this is more of a "baka gaijin" case than anything though.

Goku's US dub voice -> Goku's MX dub voice -------------> Goku's Japanese voice.

Sean Schemmel voices both a playful and a serious mature Goku perfectly. Vegeta has a good voice in the dub. Can you imagine a high pitched Goku voice competing with Vegeta's in the dub?

At this point, those who grew up with the dub have just imprinted upon a different version of the character than the one in the Japanese version. If that changes, Goku will not be Goku to a wide range of international audience.

I agree that Goku's Japanese voice sounds ridiculous. Even on principle, the idea that "he's pure so he has a child's voice" is just hamfisted as fuck. They couldn't find a more subtle way to convey that?

Moreover, Bardock is not pure yet has the same voice actress.

Sean Schemmel's Goku isn't exactly a manly voice (at least not anymore) which is part of why he's the by far the best English version of the character. He seems to get who Goku is too.

Yeah I am so glad that we got the original soundtrack in Germany lol. Gokus German voice actor was also very good - he had that childish part in it a bit. :) Nozawa is a godess though... cannot believe that she is able to get these screams out with that age lol

The only thing the German dub did wrong was change the Gohan SSJ2 transformation music, really.

German dub is definitely the GOAT of all the dubs, in both music and voice acting. Also, the german opening themes are just the best, that's including the japanese.

Do you remember the Cell Games special that they aired? Where they cut all the filler scenes to a 2 hour special? That was the shit. Dub was glorious and sometimes I still listen to the German Cha la head cha la :)

I guess they would have to pay more for the SSJ2 transformation music...

Sean Schemmel has also learned to lighten up on Goku throughout the years too, less of "I'am japanese superman!" and more of his original character, idiot savant who likes to fight.

You dub fans are missing out on these little quirks Goku as a character has. The dub completely ignores this. Schemmel also sounds like a normal joe which is completely different from Japanese Goku who sounds like a person that was raised in the woods. When Goku speaks you can tell he's a hick. In the dub he sounds nothing like that. He sounds just like a regular guy.

Example:

They made Goku sound like a proper gentleman that knows romance with his proposal when in reality it was anything but that. These things alter his character.

Funimation's dub (the one that uses the Japanese music) doesn't use the Gohan SSJ2 theme either. It could just be a rights issue.

But goku is Japanese superman even down to color pallete and origin
Eh maybe storywise (and remember him being an alien came way later) but character wise it's not even close. I doubt there was any inspiration till Z era and like I said, only from a story stand point.

Goku does care about saving the world.
ArchedThunder never said otherwise. Personally I view it as a fine line. He cares about his friends and family a whole lot, but his need to fight and grow stronger is deep in his core basically from day one.

Edit: And he's a idiotic hick so that doesn't help either :p

The Japanese dub for Goku is amazing, I think. And Wendel Bezerra for the Brazilian dub as well. He's iconic for us.

About Gohan, I think that the movie with him and Trunks in the future showed a really cool character. Sure, he wasn't as strong as he could be, but he was a fighter.

Also, since you were talking about soundtrack before, I really miss this one in Kai: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Bep710u9sQ (up until 1:00, except for the part between 0:40 and 0:44, which isn't really a part of the theme).

Goku does care about saving the world.

In his fight with Piccolo Jr, where the fate of the world was hanging in the balance, he constantly told people to butt out of the fight because he wanted to become the world champion. After Piccolo was beaten into the dirt and Kami wanted to kill him (or they could have easily sealed him with the Mafuba at that point) Goku says fuck that shit and gives him a senzu, saying "I'd be lonely without a rival". He cared more about getting to fight Piccolo again than possibly saving the world from future harm. Then in Z he does almost the exact same thing (minus the senzu) with Vegeta, he lets Freeza power up to 100% because he wants a good fight and then decides not to finish him off because he's pathetic compared to him and then there is the often pointed out time that he gave Cell a senzu.
It's not to say that he doesn't care about the world/universe, it's just that he is much more immediately concerned with fighting strong people.
And as a side note some of these instances where covered up in the Funi dub, for instance in the dub the reason he lets Vegeta live is because he can "sense good in his heart" or some bullshit, when in the Japanese version he outright says he's being selfish because he just wants to fight him again.
