New English Gameplay of Xenoblade Chronicles X

A couple of the videos being posted definitely contain story spoilers that anyone who thinks they might be interested should probably avoid. Some of the characters shown, for example, are meant to be reveals at earlier parts of the story.

Which part do you think is derailing, honestly? Telling something that their post (which ostensibly was written to get other people excited) contains factual errors is not a derail in my mind.

Listen, I don't want to get into backseat modding, but it really felt that way. Sorry.

It's hard to judge without playing the actual game, but I like the idea of story taking a backseat to exploration and discovery. Skies of Arcadia is one of my favorite JRPGs because of that very reason.

I just hope the majority of missions aren't worthless dribble drabble. It's going to be hard to stomach countless "run and collect this" and "kill this many enemies" after experiencing the stellar side quests of the Witcher 3 just mere months ago.

I mean, they kind of are from a gameplay perspective, but the actual stories that play out during the side quests can be really interesting. Some of the most memorable moments in the game for me came from those optional side missions. They help flesh out the world and the people of NLA and their past.

It's 400km2, around 10x bigger than Skyrim and 3x bigger than The Witcher 3 (all regions).

I mean, I've been playing Witcher 3 and collect X, kill Y, investigate/read Z are pretty much all I've seen. Going to Skelige right now after finishing the cabaret dandelion secondary quest.
The one good thing is that they actually give a good (sometimes fleshed out) story to those side quests which is what makes them feel much better to go through :3

Having recently finished cataloging all of the normal and affinity quests, every objective is either "go to place", "kill these things", "collect these things", or "talk to this dude". Occasionally you have to inspect things, but those are basically just "talk to this inanimate dude". So, any enjoyment you get out of them will have to come from the exploration/fighting itself(which is quite enjoyable), or the events that require all of the talking to dudes and killing/collecting things.

Considering dropping my preorder for the special edition. It looks fine, but I really don't need to spend 70+ dollars on a game I may not completely play.

How much does the "main" story lasts? If its as big as the first game , but not as good then thats very dissapointing.

Hmmm... well I can live with that as long as they are dressed well enough to provide incentive to continue doing them via story and/or gameplay gains.

I concede that in the end they do mostly boil down to killing/collecting/investigating, but like you said the story and method of getting to the typical kill or collect gameplay element is what makes the side stories so compelling. In my original post I was mostly referring to your typical two-lines-of-dialogue side quests that only provides you with in-game currency as an incentive to complete them. I'm fine the battling and collecting all day long as long as proper incentive is provided.

Thanks for the clarification. I just hope that the story and exploration elements of the side quest are as enjoyable as Zelah has alluded to. Overall, would you say you enjoyed the side quests or were they mostly a slugfest to get through?

Poor dino, just tryna get a drink.

First Fallout 4, then this, looking pretty stacked for the rest of the year! I like the sky box at night too.

It's hard to say exactly, but the designated main story quests definitely don't add up to nearly the amount of content as the first game. Of the 50+ hours I've spent, I'd say the majority was on side quests/Kizuna quests or doing stuff to fulfill the conditions required to unlock the next story quest. You will frequently encounter walls that prevent you from taking on the next story quest unless you hit a certain level and/or activate X number of points on the map. Many also require certain Kizuna quests to have been completed first. In that sense, I guess you could treat all of those requirements as "the main story," since you are required to do them.

Regardless, there is certainly plenty to keep you busy in the game. You'll be unlocking major new features well into your playthrough. I think I didn't get the ability to fly until around the 35 or 40 hour mark.

I didn't really mind doing them, but I get the feeling my gaming tastes aren't particularly normal, so that might not mean much... For a lot of quests, I had already explored enough to know exactly where the enemies were, or I already had enough of the required items to complete the objectives instantly, so very few of them felt like they dragged on. Sweeping NLA(once during the day and once at night) after every story chapter to see if new people had quests available was more annoying than actually completing any of them ever was.

On the bright side, some of the quests were absolutely hilarious.

I'll have my copy next week & will post footage soon after. Looking forward to this game.

Won't reviewers get access to the data packs that will speed up the loading times or will they have to play entirely from disc? Or do they get the 100% digital version?

Not too sure. Right now I know retail copies are being sent out. I'll have to look at any additional information when I get my hands on the game next week.

Japan has mastered the "Terrible Voice Direction for Young Females" so the VA performance quality could only go up in the localization.

The dub is great so far and everything, but japan treats voice acting alot more seriously then the western world does

Mmm i may be wrong but i don't think you can see the entire continent of Primordia from up there. He was close to NLA when he went up.

Apparently Elma is the main character, not the silent avatar.
Whoa that's huge... ;)

Perhaps in the sense that their voice actors become stars with fan followings, but in general they do not give a fuck about believable acting. The same can be said with most Japanese productions, honestly. They seem to love melodrama and over exaggerated acting and dialogue, or at least tend to value it over having believable characters.

Pretty much. Japanese voice acting is just as OTT as English dub voice acting.

A lot of people actually recommend not using anime as inspiration when you're learning to speak the language, just because nobody actually talks like that in real life, aha.

That's good....that's fucking good

The environments are massive, but do keep in mind that even on foot your characters can move very quickly, can jump large distances (it's actually quite fun) and there is no fall damage (also very fun to leap off cliffs), and once you get your mechs you can generally zoom around very quickly, and fast travel is available from anywhere as long as you've unlocked the travel point.

It's impressive how seamless most of the world is, for sure. Being able to walk around talking to NPCs in town one moment and then hop into your mech and fly off into the wilderness ("Over the rainbow...") the next moment all with no loading is quite impressive.

If it's not big for the sakes of being being and mostly all useful terrain it's quite an achievement.

December is too far :(

Unlike Skyrim or GTAV (and im assuming witcher 3) the world is completely designed by hand, no generated landscapes and trees etc., so basically very area was made wit ha purpose, your even encouraged to explore more than other games as you actually earn EXP from finding new landmarks

That worries me, could it be, too BIG? O.o

whats the point in having a world 3x the Witcher 3? time will tell if its not tedious to travel.

I cant believe it, GTA V not made by hand?

Thank god for no fall damage. I've been annoyed by it in recent games I've played.

I mean, if this game allows you to fast travel from anywhere (rather than only from a stupid sign post a la witcher 3 or guacamelee), that's already infinitely better.
