Unlike Skyrim or GTAV (and im assuming witcher 3) the world is completely designed by hand, no generated landscapes and trees etc., so basically very area was made wit ha purpose, your even encouraged to explore more than other games as you actually earn EXP from finding new landmarks
Do you know the source for that "completely designed by hand" claim? I had asked for it in another thread a long time ago, but never got an answer. I think someone said it came from the Iwata Asks for the game, but I could never find any such claim.
I also don't know if it's fair to say that games like Skyrim, GTA V and The Witcher 3 were *not* made by hand. The world of Xenoblade X is absolutely massive, but there isn't much in it but monsters and cool looking environments. You're not going to be finding towns or quest-giving NPCs or cool hidden treasure chests. Just lots of monsters and exp/crafting item giving objects. Not sure if it's totally fair to compare it with other open world games.
Thank god for no fall damage. I've been annoyed by it in recent games I've played.
Having no fall damage allows for you to navigate the environment and do fun stuff like jump off cliffs, but I do miss it sometimes. It was fun to kill enemies by knocking them down from high places in the first Xenoblade.
