New Hobbit poster revealed

And weren't they trying to be inconspicuous? Two hobbits, Gollum and the fucking ring of power riding giant eagles would ever so slightly draw attention.

Anyone else not excited about The Hobbit at all?

I remember reading the book in school and loving it, but the trailer and this poster have me concerned. It doesn't look exciting at all. Looks kind of corny actually

To put it in laymans terms, the eagles are inhabited by what you might describe as etheral beings, not unlike Gandalf. They do not meddle in the affairs of middle-earth, unless they're sent to, as Gandalf was. They don't really fight for a "side". They only ever assist Gandalf, who is a being similar to them. Someone more familiar with the lore might be able to elaborate a bit more.

Did you really want a 5 minute long scene explaining why the eagles couldn't fly them to Mt. Doom? Pretty ridiculous criticism.

I'm pretty sure eagles are just animals. And how is hitching a ride considered "fighting for a side"?

The first trailer looked great, and that was released when they were still early in shooting. New trailer should be a lot more telling.

Wasn't the first trailer just them all sitting in the hobbit hole and Gandalf naming a bunch of hobbits like they were Snow White's dwarves, and then telling Bilbo he's going on an adventure and that's it? Felt really lame.

You know that The Hobbit was written as a children's story originally, right?

It was essentially a teaser trailer, and a pretty good one at that. Like I said, they were pretty early in shooting during that trailer so what do you expect?

They should adapt it to be more adult to fit in with the other movies.

Meh. Also, the sets looked really bad, especially the one of Gandalf by himself in a blue night area? Totally looked like an indoor set.

Oh well, whatever, hopefully the new trailer will be better and more epic.

First of all, they were dwarves.

Second, I had the exact opposite reaction. The trailer gave me chills, especially when the dwarves started to sing. I don't need trailers to have explosions or fight scenes to be epic.

Like was stated earlier, The Hobbit was written as a childrens book. It reads much lighter than LotR. If I'm not mistaken, PJ has said that the second movie will kind of bridge the tones of The Hobbit and the LotR trilogy.

I still have no idea what they plan for the second movie. The story of the book will be done in the first movie as far as i know. Gandalf and Aragorn hunting down Gollum? The council fighting the Necromancer? The rise of Sauron?

€: okay according to imdb they splitted it at the lake city:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1170358/

I wonder how whimsical it will be, if at all. When Guillermo was still attached, didn't he say that he wanted to include the talking animals from the book?

I have a hard time seeing PJ and crew keeping that.

Why is Gandalf's robe grey again? Does he not have Tide or something and now it's dirty?

Just kidding, I know they didn't have Tide back then

wait when did The Hobbit become two movies? Is this recent news that it wouldn't be all one film? This disappoints me for some reason

It's been known for ages that it'd be two films. Maybe they thought they couldn't fit enough in one movie. The Hobbit isn't nearly as wordy as LotR. Or maybe they're just greedy.

Fuck no. I really hope Jackson doesn't make the Hobbit all serious and grim and preserves some of the whimsy of the novel. Thats what ruined King Kong. Jackson gave the same serious, earnest tone to what's essentally a pulpy monster film, which made it insufferable to watch.

They are much more than just animals. They were created by Manwë Súlimo and sent to watch over The Noldor. Gwaihir was also capable of speech. Much more than just an animal.

Giving the ringbearer a ride to Mt. Doom would have been choosing a side as they would have played a huge rule in determining the winner of the War of the Ring.

Watching the animated movie by Rankin/Bass, it's obvious that you'd have to cut a lot and rush the rest to fit it all in one movie, and Jackson also wants to tell additional stories surrounding that period in LotR history.

So Gandalf's just some scrub with weak magic?

He's actually like the incarnation of fire or some shit...I think? I don't remember what little information I managed to parse out of the Silmarillion
He's very very powerful though, Wikipedia tells me that he's one of the elder spirits that existed before Creation.

Eagles are not created by Manwe. No one in Tolkien's mythos has the power to create sentient life except Eru. Not Aule, Melkor Manwe, Yavanna or any of the Aratar could do so. Corrupt and engineer existing life yes, but not create life with a fëa.

An Ainu of Maiar rank, the equivalent of a lesser angel. The Ainu were Eru's (god) first creations. The Valar the most powerful, the Maiar subservient to them. Then he created the Earth with their aid. Some descended into the new world to shape it and govern it. Melkor, who was second only to Eru in might rebelled and waged war on the Valar, he was the devil and it was he that corrupted Mairon of Aule aka Sauron. Then came the Children of Iluvatar (elves and men) and the stepchildren of Iluvatar (dwarves) as well as the Children of Morgoth (all the corrupted beings in Middle-earth).

Great summary.

In terms of power, the only thing I would add is that even within the same strata of beings, there are varying levels of power. For instance, Tolkien himself stated that although Gandalf was a Maiar like Sauron himself, he was of a far lesser level of might.

Know what that poster needs?

The Hobbit.
Gandalf is instantly recognisable and known due to the trilogy, whereas Martin Freeman's Bilbo is a total unknown amongst the general public, only those who have been following the production and keeping up with the news will know him. It's understandable as to why they're using Gandalf as the front man.

Erm, whilst indeed a fair degree more lighthearted than the Lord of the Rings, the original novel does feature quite a bit of adult content (mass slaughter of goblins, war, the razing of towns, racist tensions, etc). Not sure what your concern is here, that Jackson and co up and forgot all of that?

Dear Lord, Such ignorance.
