New Hunter x Hunter Anime |OT| of Hunters and adventure and NO MANGA SPOILERS

I love that this arc has finally been animated. The fights are as I pictured them and more. The art for this arc was so bad at times they were just lite sketches. Yet I kept reading because of how interesting the fights and the thought process of the characters were during the fights. This episode is a prime example of that. It's why I took to this series so easily back in college when I finally came across the manga. To the point it was one of the few series I started to collect (manga volumes and dvd (kicking myself I didn't keep up with that as I just have the first box set and can't get the rest)) as I read the scans and watched the show via methods.

Just going to enjoy the rest of this arc while last.

I do have a question. How does the York Shin and Greed Island arcs of the new series compare to the first series/ovas? Better? Worse? Just as a good? From what I remember those arcs had no filler at all and looked great.

Edit: Sorry that's Greed Island, not Green Island. Always make that mistake.

Yeah, the manga had shit art at times, but I kept reading b/c it was so good. I too am glad that this arc finally got animated, and it was amazing.

I watched the 1999 anime a couple years ago, and the Yorkshin arc is on par with the current Yorkshin arc, although the new arc is more visually pleasing imo. Greed Island in 2011 is far greater than the Greed Island OVA from 1999.

Sorry if double post

If you watch Dragon Ball Z then you'll know exactly what it means.

I have seen DBZ, but do you just mean visually, or otherwise?

Only implicitly so far, but they'll go in to why by the end of the series. There are a few reasons.

When is this explained? I read the manga but I don't remember.

I wouldn't say it's a complete ripoff, but it's got the same idea when Gohan reaches SS2, and he's lightning quick with his attacks, and the little lightning sparks around Killua even remind me of how it was animated in DBZ.

I'm okay with it though, as I've seen a lot of other anime/manga influence in HunterxHunter, for example the Kurta tribe's eyes are a lot like Uchiha eyes from Naruto.

EDIT: I just looked at wikipedia for the manga of HunterxHunter and Naruto, and it looks like they both came out first at a similar time, so it's hard to say who go the inspiration from the other. But this series does seem to borrow ideas from others which is clear to me.

I am pretty sure its the other way around as far as influences go HxH is pretty damn old afteral

I see what you mean by a visual similarity, but I don't think the powers are that similar. SS2 grants an increase in speed and power. Killua's Kanmuru is a much more specific power, granting speed and other abilities. But like I said, I see the similarity as well.

The Kurta Eye/Uchiha thing I think is similar, but also not the same. Uchiha eyes grant a specific ability (sharingan), but as far as we know Kurta eyes don't do anything except for changing Kurapika's nen type. (Maybe scarlet eyes change all Kurtas to a specialist?)

Edit: to the post above me, H x H began serialization in 1998, Naruto in 1999, and DB/DBZ have been around since the 70s/80s

Yeah I know all of the above.

Glad the Greed Island arc is better. Looking forward to going back and watching. I enjoyed the previous version so if the new one is better all the better. Glad York Shin is just as good. That's what really made a fan of the series and made it harder to watch other shonen series.

I do remember at the time there were the HxH and Naruto comparisons. I always figured it was Dragon Ball that influenced HxH (you can easily see this. The King is a send up to Cell and Freiza for example.) and then HxH influenced Naruto. I remember thinking at the time that HxH improved the elements it used from Dragon Ball while Naruto resulted in a negative outcome. Mainly because there was no significant trade offs in Naruto for the powers that were being put on display and events that were taking place. I could be wrong but that is is what I remember feeling at the time.

Citing the minute differences isn't really the point, as each anime, even if influenced by another, would try to differentiate itself by making it's own spin on a specific idea. But the similarities are definitely there. And yeah, as I said earlier that it's possibly the other way around in terms of who was influenced by the other. But the eyes are incredibly similar in each: Both tribes have special eyes that are 'red' and give them special abilities and are sought after by others in some way. Not to mention, both tribes have been eradicated except for a few (or in HH, only one). Quite similar, but yet each show utilizes the idea in a different way.

Can't wait for his next fight. Whenever it is.

I fully expect to hear some variation of: "Impossible!! No one should be able to keep up with me in this mode."

Yeah I guess you're right. I do appreciate the differences and similarities. Do we really know if the Scarlet Eyes give anyone special abilities other than Kurapika? It's never really explained, but I guess all the Kurtas are dead so unless they explain the history, I guess we won't know.

Yeah we don't really know that, except that it seemed like Kurapika got stronger, at least from the fact that he went into rage mode. But once he realized he becomes a specialist the similarities grew between the two tribes. The fact that he gets special power that gets exausted quickly is pretty similar to the Uchiha eyes.

But anyway, I still think it's awesome. I can't wait to see more Kurapika, and I've been wondering what he's been up to during this arc. His fight with the troupe was amazing.

Yeah, i really loved his fight with Uvo. Kurapika is a great character, and I hope he gets more spotlight later on.

I've read the manga though, so I know what happens

The fuck? So I need to see 20 episodes more to get to that point? Is it me or this show started getting really slow after the first 60 episodes? And the Greed Island arc felt like pure filler.

Uuuugghh, I'm getting sick of these characters just standing around doing inner monologues in every episode. They think too much and nothing gets done. This kind of shit is like watching what goes through the mind of someone with anxiety issues. Reminds me of the times when my brain would not shut up about everything and end up in a crying spell, just like what the octopus did in this episode

90% of all action anime I've ever watched is like this, and frankly, it's why I love anime. I love seeing what they think and the tactics being devised on the spot. It does get overboard but it's kind of like hyping up each moment for me.

EDIT: Maybe 90% is a little high lol but many anime shows do this...there's also the trend where the enemy or hero will stop to tell you how he/she became so strong or how the special attack worked. It's not realistic but it's fun to see ha ha.

Stupid question...

Was it ever explained why only a couple of hunters, granted it is Netero, were sent to deal with the ants?
It was said that Natero had some opposition to his presidency of the hunter association that want the operation to fail so that he would loose his position.

smurfx

get some go again
wonder if killua would be able to program his body to dodge neteros attacks. pitou didn't even know what hit him when netero used his attack.

Interesting take, Netero's attacks are instant so there's not really any room to react....
As Zeno said you can't predict where the president's attacks will come from based on his aura.
Chances are Killua would use his juice very quickly and be left open after that.
Netero is that overkill IMO.
At this point I don't a RG standing a chance against Killua's new skill.

Yeah sure, I get what you're saying. But the show have been excessive about this lately. What's worse is that it makes the "cleverness" of the characters feel contrived. Kurapika and the spider troupe didn't need this kind of bullshit in the Yorkshin arc.

Anyway, I just want the show to pick up the pace and be done with the chimera ant arc because it's terrible imo

Just visually. I mean, it kinda makes sense for him to glow a bit, but I just didn't expect it to be this much.

Yeah, I get that.

Did Togashi do Yu Yu Hakusho first or HxH?

Yu Yu Hakusho

Yeah, Killua's ability is pretty insane but Netero's attack are insanely fast so, no way.

I would say that as Killua grows and trains that eventually this could become possible

There's not that much manga discussion in here but yes, I'd recommend holding off on discussing any further otherwise stuff will start getting spoiled.

Cut it out geese.

I'm sorry, but this is why I show people the Chimera Ant arc instead of the beginning. It just escalates, people like it and are willing to go back.

It's criminal how HxH is misjudged, I think it escalates and becomes good, rather quickly frankly. Nobody seems to give it a decent chance though.

I first learned about HxH in a Shonen Jump magazine and the description was basically "boy on a quest to find his father" and Gon is shown riding a turtle.

The main character being a young boy made the manga appear childish to me when compared to the other shonen mains (Luffy, Naruto, Ichigo).
Have to say I was greatly surprised it turned out to be the most violent/graphic out of them when I finally decided to check it out.

At first, I also never gave the series much notice at all. Overlooked it constantly because of the child protagonist, and the 1st volume artwork. Till the day I simply wanted to read the best Shounen comics ever made. Hunter x Hunter, a series I'd never really heard of, was constantly mentioned as one of the best Shounen Battle/Tournament series. Shit, all I needed to know was Togashi made it. That was a good 8-9 years ago.

Name drop Yu Yu Hakusho, it get's people's attention.

I just rewatched it. As Youpi is ruminating over Kilua's disappearance, the dark space disappears. Which means that either Shoot is unconscious, out of range, dead, or deactivated it for some reason.

Dying doesn't remove the effects of Nen though, wasn't it said around YorkShin/GL that often it intensifies the Nen (re: Kurapika's chain, I think.)

Shoot being conscious could be a requirement of his Nen(Shoot said this right?). You are still correct though, be cool as hell if Shoot's nen got more effective if he died.

He needs to be conscious for the ability to be active, but if he died that would enhance his ability effect on youpi and he wouldn't be able to disspell the nen or it would be much more difficult to do it.

Is his ability limited by distance? Could also be a continuity error.

It's not a continuity error, in the scene where killua escapes youpi, you can see how the effect vanishes and stays that way.

i'm glad i am not the only one that thought killa looked super saiyanish (ssj2 to be precise :p)
I am really hoping they tone down the narrator though... I swear he has had more lines in the last few episodes then any other character @_@ (though I suppose the most recent ep was better about it... after we got away from the real action)

i'm just sick and tired of hearing every scene that I can see described by the narrator, the inner monologues in general done by him, and him hinting at stuff to come and at times spoiling the end of a fight before the fight was resolved. (I didn't think killa would defeat the guy but you don't need to explain the character was going to eventually learn how to do something after the fight)

I've debated to check the manga to see if the narrator is as obnoxiously used there as well.... but i fear if I crack open the manga I might not stop with my checking and just continue on... which since I am watching this show with my wife is not something I want to do lol.
