Maybe I'm missing something. How are you charging? By plugging your phone into an external battery pack? What do you need the splitter for?

Does this mythical phone of yours have two ports? One for power and one for audio that isn't a 3.55mm jack?

Let's take the iPhone for example. A single port is used for both charging and headphones. You can't do both without a splitter.

Was going to have my wife adopt my S8 once the Pixel 2 was available, but even with Bixby souring me on Samsung, the S8 seems like a better phone for me. Thank goodness that TouchWiz isn't the abomination that it once was. I'd still prefer stock Android, but not at the expense of what I think is better hardware on the S8.

Not interested in having to worry about the battery life of my headphones of all things. Was looking at the Pixel 2 as my next phone but I'll be skipping it if there isn't a headphone jack. I'd be willing to overlook things like waterproofing, but no headphone jack is a deal breaker.

I would be ok if smart phones stopped getting thinner for a while. They could use the extra space for a bigger battery, or better cooling.

I don't disagree, but the number of audiophiles who care about the quality difference is small compared to the number of people who don't even use headphones anyway, or do but don't care about the difference. Making big improvements for a billion people while making it slightly worse for a million is not a hard decision.

Bluetooth provides 24Mbps/s, which is more than enough for cd quality audio (which requires 1.4Mbps), so if you're not getting it then over time as devices improve you should (and transfer rates may increase further with future iterations of the Bluetooth spec).

Sure although, charging isn't much of an issue for most people, sound quality really only matters to the 1% audiophiles considering how people are fine with earpods.

Interference issues..well that's a new one, I have no idea if that's a real threat or not personally.

Some of us don't want to use Bluetooth headphones as our primary output set because 1) sound quality sucks, 2) another thing to charge and keep track of its charge level if you want to use it for an extended period, 3) wireless interference issues, 4) greater potential of being nabbed when out in public. I have a Bluetooth set for the office but I've experienced the first 3 of these issues several times and they don't endear me to the technology.

If I'm going to be out all day, it's pretty typical for me to bring a battery pack and keep it plugged in all day, and use my wired earbuds instead of Bluetooth because I don't know how long the the BT ones will last. With only one port, I have to sacrifice one of these options. And for what benefit?

Probably will just stick with my S8. Was probably going to go Pixel XL 2, but no headphone jack or water resistance would be a downgrade from what I already have.

Seems silly to defend the lack of headphones jack. Phones with jacks can use wireless headphones as well. The removal offers nothing but a lack of choice.

Because uh... With 3.5mm, you aren't losing anything. Nada. Zilch. There is literally no reason to remove it.

What you are "losing" with a 3.5mm jack is space that can be used for something else

How exactly is a headphone jack stopping stereo speakers and a larger battery? Yay thinner phones I guess, I always wanted my phone to be more fragile.

Thinner would definitely be a negative at this point. Phones are thin enough as is. And there are plenty of phones on the market now that have proved you can get large batteries and stereo speakers without sacrificing ports.

Surely we can agree that a 3.5mm jack occupies a non zero amount of space in the phone, and without the jack that space could be used by other circuitry?

No surprise there. Samsung remains the best Android phone maker. I really don't get the love people have for Google phones anymore. They aren't that cheap and no where near as high spec for the price.

There is no fucking way you will get any kind of benefit from stereo speakers on a fucking phone. The speakers will be inches apart from each other, possibly even less.

I love my Bluetooth Bose cans and all but it's pure fuckery taking away headphone jacks for an absolute non-benefit like stereo. The argument Apple made was:

- We're adding water resistance
- we're including an adapter
- we have a "just works" solution (airpods)

To do none of these and just yank the jack out of there is consumer hostile and a huge misstep.

Good thing my current Pixel is still running like a champ.

It will always be a grand debate over what exactly Devs will use that space for.

I have an iPhone 7 and I won't lie: the headphone situation is significantly worse than before. I've been in places where I can't connect to a car or my wireless buds are dead and it sucks everytime. But it's manageable since the solution is just dongles everywhere you may not use wireless buds. So I got a dongle in the gym bag, dongle in wifes car, dongle in my work bag and a dongle at my office.

Since everyone can do this (and pay more for accessories) it's no surprise that companies remove the jack. And everyone complaining will get over it and use those solutions. Sucks but what can you do. Companies got courage cuz there is no meaningful competition sticking to its guns

Actually they aren't; unless you were blasting yourself in the face at close range there was zero separation. The mono front speaker on the 5X gives you all the front speaker benefit you're talking about. And it shipped with a headphone jack.

There are phones with stereo speakers and a headphone jack though? Like my Nexus 6P for example.

With phones without headphone jacks, is that extra space being used in meaningful ways? How much extra battery can you get from that space?

Seeing as the iPhone 7 Plus has a much smaller battery than the 6P, no they aren't doing much with the extra 'space'.

Absolutely. My 3 year old Z3 had a jack, stereo speakers, was waterproof and a battery that lasted longer than any phone without a jack. There is no sensible argument to remove it.

Having a 3.5mm headphone jack does not prevent a phone from having any of those benefits.
