Is the "black pope" liberal? That's all I care about. I don't want the next pope telling people not to wear condoms, etc...
All the cardinals are what you'd call conservative. Don't expect the Church to encourage gay people to marry and things like that (I wonder why people even expect that from them).

That's disappointing...we don't need another conservative Pope. That's something that directly affects peoples' lives in a negative way.
I have news for you: the church's political (and everyone's, for that matter) is more nuanced than socially liberal or conservative.

Catholics are fiercely progressive when it comes to living wages, supporting the poor and warfare - believing that charity can only do so much and the Government must have a major part in those problems. Extremely radical in comparison to protestant Christianity in the United States.

At the same time, they believe in the sanctity of human life upon entering the womb and abstinence in sexual education.

Please tell me they're not wasting all that flavor, they got a brisket going at the bottom of that chimney right?

I know that's not going to happen. I'm just tired of the Catholic Church telling HIV-stricken countries to not wear condoms. Oh, and child abuse....that needs to stop. Hopefully that's not too much to ask for in 2013.

Personally I hope they pick the Filipino guy.

Why he might be pope
With a Chinese mother and roots in the Philippines, he would be a pope from the developing world. His charisma has been compared with John Paul II, and he is described as humble.

Yes, I'm sure it's nuanced as you say, but when I say liberal I'm asking for a pope akin to Pope John Paul II.

Same here, but it won't happen. It will be the Italian guy.

To the delighted surprise of many, clouds of white smoke poured from the chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel March 13, indicating a pope had been elected on the conclave's fifth ballot.

The smoke signal went off at 7:05 p.m. The 115 cardinals gathered to elect the 266th successor of Peter had taken one vote late March 12 and two votes the next morning, resulting in clouds of black smoke.

The Vatican estimated it would be about an hour before Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the top-ranking cardinal deacon, would come out onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and confirm the election with the phrase "Habemus papam" (We have a pope).

The white smoke comes from burning the ballots and cardinals' notes and tallies along with special chemicals to produce abundant white smoke.

But the world did not know the identity of the new pope right away. While the bells of St. Peter's Basilica rang out the news of the election of the new pope, he was inside the Sistine Chapel changing into papal vestments and praying with the cardinals who just elected him.

He also was scheduled to stop on his way to the balcony to pray briefly before the Blessed Sacrament in the Pauline Chapel, where the cardinals began their solemn procession into the conclave March 12.

Ex-Catholic here.

I only care who the new pope is, because it will impact my family. My family is religious, and I would hate for the next Pope to be even more conservative than the last one.

I don't know how many times I have to say it. JPII was not a liberal, and I have no idea where you're getting this idea...
