Question: did it really matter that the last pope was conservative? I mean, he wasn't pope long enough to influence generations like John Paul was.

He cracked down on the US nuns who were focused on helping the poor and issues of social justice, and allowed the US Cardinals to fight universal healthcare. Along with John Paul II refusing to address the child abuse scandals it has created a huge divide among Catholics in the US.

Its not so much as a problem of the Pope being conservative as it is allowing other conservatives to alienate moderate and liberal catholics.

This is all so weird. All these spears and swords, and helmets. I mean its cool, but still...
It's hardly exclusive to the Vatican.

Well, with Christianity being such a fractured religion, there really aren't that many global figureheads outside of the Pope. I guess Billy Graham, but still not to the same degree.

Protestants generally find televangelists like Joel Osteen creepy. Neil Clark Warren has somehow avoided this label.

At the same time, technically Protestants believe Catholics to be heretical for praying to Saints and the Pope. And also think Catholics are weird for not personally studying the Bible.

Well, Catholics will always have the Martin-Luther-Was-Suffering-From-Crazy-Visions-While-Having-Explosive-Diarrhea-and-that's-the-foundation-of-Protestantism thing over us.

JPII did more to reach out to the youth in the Catholic Church than any other pope before him. That's his legacy.
I, uh, yes.
Oh, you meant to ask a different question than the one you did. Ok.

The answer to that is the same as why Sony fans would care about a change in hierarchy at Nintendo.
Now this I understand.

To be honest, the divide has always been there- really the reports of this past pope being in any real way faaaar more "conservative" than JP2 are overblown. JP2's message of peace and unity was great, but with regards to the actual issues they had precisely the same views.

Whoever it is, I hope he takes Peter as his Papal name and is vaugely Roman. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing conspiracy theorists suffer heart attacks.

Well, the Catholic Church isn't as top down as you'd think outside of doctrine.

Each Diocese actually has a wide range of independence when it comes to operation.

Also, you're conflating the issue regarding the Cardinals' letter. The Catholic Church is all for Universal Healthcare. They. Love. That. Shit. What they weren't down with was the government sanctioning of contraceptives and abortion. They didn't want "Catholic" (QFE) hospitals being forced to, in their eyes, commit murder.

I see your point, still, while that is damaging he wasn't pope long enough for the damage to endure. Just observing from afar it appears Benedict's whole tenure was just a placeholder and he was just going to reinforce the status quo.

Yup.

The new pope then comes out onto the balcony and gives his first blessing "urbi et orbi" (to the city and the world) and usually gives a short speech.

For the crowds in St. Peter's Square and for those watching on television or listening on the radio, devoutly following the new pope's blessing carries a plenary indulgence, Father Lombardi said.

Sweet!

Wait, what's a plenary indulgence?

By a plenary indulgence is meant the remission of the entire temporal punishment due to sin so that no further expiation is required in Purgatory.

Baller!

What's expiation again?

1: the act of making atonement
2: the means by which atonement is made

Got it, legit!

[Father Lombardi] did not say if the indulgence applies to Twitter followers.

Snap!

I propose a game. The first poster with the new Pope's name becomes an honorary GAF Cardinal.

Regardless of name it'll be Pope Peter, to fulfill the old prophesy that the last Pope will be named Peter after Benedict and just before the end of times, just after Benedict resigns after the December comet seen in the sky.

No really, look it up.

Probably not, you are right. But it still impacts (to some degree) the church, and the people that worship there. It influences attitudes.

I'm just saying, I would hate for the church to continue the status qo or go back when it comes to social issues. The last pope was against condoms, even if it helped prevent STDs in Africa. Shit like that has to go.

Of course, I also understand that I'm an atheist -- so what I want, doesn't really reflect the religion. I was just saying, my family is still super religious. So on some level, I feel it will impact me.

You guys also have a point that Diocese operate on their own level.

Well obviously. :p Its just something I dont usually relate to the catholic church. At least not the contemporary one that is. Seems like those things you see in documentaries or old movies. I guess it just didnt change as much as I thought it did, thats all.

Nobody should give a fuck about the pope, catholicism, or religion in general.

You're in a thread exclusively about a new pope, what are you expecting exactly?

I'm all for team atheism and all, but c'mon dude...

Italy is a old country with lots and lots of history that they want to preserve. They formed Roman empire, after that they embraced Christianity, proved to be very important in kickstarting Renaissance [strong naval and land connections with MiddleEast&Asia] that completley changed European history.
