New PS4 Media Player launches today - DLNA, MKV support and more

Yeah barely any of my files are working

The PS3 is not getting retired yet,

Weird all mine do without issue, mkv's, any types to really.

Yup. It's capable of holding an uncompressed BD stream, but most files out there are still lossy.
Didn't know that...looked up the specs and found the following:
There is only one reserved word for Element Size encoding, which is an Element Size encoded to all 1's. Such a coding indicates that the size of the Element is unknown, which is a special case that we believe will be useful for live streaming purposes. However, avoid using this reserved word unnecessarily, because it makes parsing slower and more difficult to implement.
I guess this should be obvious since HTML5 <video> is supposed to support Matroska MKV and it is streaming and will include live events where the size can't be known. This PDF contains the supported Codecs which includes AVI which can be uncompressed.

How do I refresh the file list? So a newly added video to my PC will show, struggling to make that happen.

Opening Windows Media Player library used to do it for me when I used PMS/UMS.

Universal media server keeps crashing when trying to play music. Its also not scanning my itunes library fully.

Not sure if noted but it supports videos @60fps aswell, I downloaded the 40 min MGS Demo and it wouldn't play on my TV's media player due to being 60fps, so I try this and it worked perfect.

Sweet addition but it's not as good as the one built in with my Sony smart tv. For example, you can't select subtitles track in the .mkv format.

it doesn't, last night i try with the street fighter 5 video on 60fps, desync audio and slow video..

Well if you already own a PS4, as I'm assuming most of the people taking an interest in this thread do, then the media player functionality which they just added costs you $0. If you were going to express the difference in price between $30 and $0 as a ratio, it would be infinity! Also the problem with a raspberry pi is that it plays everything except PS4 games :)

It's just nice to finally be approaching feature parity between the PS3 and PS4. The PS4 still can't play audio CDs or let you set your own desktop picture, but at least the DLNA stuff has finally been crossed off the list.

Not even close. You can't save videos and pictures on the HDD. The biggest USB i have is only 1GB. I have gigs of videos on my PS3. The USB method is stupid.

We'll probably never get to store our media on the PS4s HDD because of what happened with the PS3 being jailbroken.

The biggest thing I've hopped for DLNA on PS4 was that its wireless is better than the PS3's which leads to a better streaming performance.

Even with SD content and a perfect connection I always had freezes during videos. That's completely gone on PS4. In fact, once a video is started you can skip around the video instantly, pretty awesome performance.

I could finally ditch the LAN cable I had to use for the PS3 across the room :p

Still, no more divx/xvid codec support sucks. I have tons of old video encoded in that because they still played all fine on the PS3... I wonder if I should just accept it's never coming or if they might add it later. The XB1 supports it after all...
Does anyone know if the Plex PS4 app supports divx/xvid?

Does it need to be native support? The Plex app will automatically transcode anything it needs to, and the quality can be decent if you set bandwidth high enough.

Sadly, the Plex app is stuck with the codec Sony gave them, so they're not likely to get ahead of the media player. Currently they're behind, with just the browser's mp4 codec.

Ok, I have tried just about every possible combination of settings on my PC (Universal Media Server), PS4, speakers and TV and I still cannot get any of my MKV files to play. I don't even really know where to start. Is there a good knowledge base for setting all this up?

Edit: Ok. So Plex's media server seems to be working but the quality is kinda crap. Any way to fix this?

I've had no problems with any MKVs I've tried, and I'm happy to say that ALL of my anime MKVs with embedded subtitles worked like a charm! There's no way to switch between different subtitle or audio tracks, and .srt subtitles don't work at all, but all in all the media center is a LOT better than what I thought it would be after reading through this thread.

All this coupled with the amazing performance I'm having with regards to seeking inside videos has me very happy with this update. I really hope everyone else gets their problems resolved in future updates (along with support for .srts & switching various sub/audio tracks), but I'm quite happy with the media center as is :D.

EDIT: I'm connecting over DLNA straight to WD MyBook Live NAS btw, maybe its implementation of DLNA has something to do with the fact I'm getting good results.

But I watched the 2gb MGSV 60fps video, you can't say it doesn't if I've just said I watched a 60fps video because obviously it does, its more then likely a problem with your video

I see, thanks. I was just wondering if the codec is supported by the PS4 but just not integrated in the Media Player app for licensing reasons or whatever. Firmware update please!

I would like to avoid transcoding due to the shitty (for high quality) laptop I'm using for streaming. Oh well... if I'm fed up at some point I will just use a dedicated PC to re-encode all the divx stuff.

What settings are you using though? None of my high quality vids run (if they do the sound usually does not work). Haven't changed the settings yet as they work perfectly fine for the PS3

I honestly haven't changed any of the settings in Universal Media Server, it is all default. And it has played everything I have thrown at it, MKV, MP4 and MP3s.

So these reactions aren't very encouraging. I'm still figuring out whether I'll get an xbone or ps4 first, can anyone compare the ps4's current media center functionality to the xbones? Specifically I would like a system that can play video files from my NAS.

XB1 working better for me, it has no issues playing any of my files while the PS4 plays little over half of them. Also the XB1 supports NTFS which is much more convenient.

Currently does not seem to play 24 fps content correctly: I just tried the Dark Souls III trailer (which is 24 fps) via a usb stick and I get a juddery picture on my tv. Note: my tv supports correct playback of 24 fps content such as blu-rays and hence this is an issue with the media player.

Tried to connect my phone, but all my music (nearly 1000+ tracks) is strung out in one long list. Are there really no organization features to this thing? It'd better be getting some updates down the line.

I downloaded some of the trailers from Gamersyde (wanted to watch the Horizon trailer on my projector), put them in a USB stick, connected to my PS4 aaaaannddd... Nothing =[ it doesn't recognise the MP4s from Gamersyde.. So sad.

They have played fine for me via dlna. Even their 60fps videos.

Edit: make sure you put files in a folder and not the root of the drive. PlayStation likes folders.

Surprised UMS hasn't received an update since the app was released, although I found a PS4 filter created by someone in their forums

Still seems very hit and miss though...some of my videos still refuse to play.

I figured at the very least my Star Wars trailer downloads straight from Apple Trailers would work. They were .mov files, didn't even show up. Changed to .mp4 which played on my laptop fine, showed up on my PS4 this time, but.... didn't work. Just didn't load up the said they were broken. Pretty frustrating as the PS3 did these kinds of files with aplomb, but lacked MKV support... now it's almost reversed lol. Surely this needs massively improved, these kinds of files should just work..

C'mon Sony!

Thanks for the tip! Will try it later!
Haven't tried DLNA yet. I only got a Mac, my WiFi sucks.. I usually don't bother with those things anymore.

So far I've been able to play everything I've thrown at it which is admittedly not much but I'm having a problem with .MKV's. I can't fast forward or rewind them. Is that common? I recall having the same problem with my old Vizio 3D TV. It would only play them if I renamed them to .MP4 on the USB and even then they would only fast forward or rewind at one speed.

I wonder if the Plex guys will make an effort to make dlna work well with PS4 or if they won't to get more people to pay for the native app.

It's funny that I'm not getting a PS4 yet until it has all the media functionality of the PS3, and we're still not there yet.

Love my PS3.

I've never been able to FF or RW MKV files from the PS3 (DLNA), either. Haven't tried on the PS4 yet.
