New PS4 Media Player launches today - DLNA, MKV support and more

It's clearly a temporary stop-gap app so they could say they had media support at E3, but this thing is missing a lot of features. I'm not worried but I look forward to the real DLNA v2 update, probably fall I guess?

Honestly I don't even really have a need anymore as I've been using AirPlay + an Apple TV to stream stuff for the last 2 years and that thing seems bulletproof for codecs or anything I throw at it. But I like being able to quickly throw on a home movie or some photos, PS3 was good at that.

So I got this working with the PS3 Media Server - although it wouldn't play any HD mkvs it was very quick for other files.

First I used the home network and file sharing thing in windows 8, I got the music and avi files to stream without any problems but could not get mkv to work. So I downloaded Universal Media Server and using that I can now also stream mkv files.

I'm just glad I can play straight off my hard drive now, and that it supports exFAT because my TV doesn't.

I wish exFAT support was more widespread in general. It's ridiculous that you still basically have to format external drives as FAT32 if you want to ensure compatibility across all OSes and devices. Particularly considering how easy it is to exceed 4GB in these days of HD video.

None of my mkv files worked. Had to leave my pc on last night to convert a bunch of them.

Might need some help setting up a custom AVSVC profile for this in the future. Any takers?

As barebones as it gets, hopefully they improve it swiftly.

Guess I should try this then, I'm now just using WMP 12 iirc. (Windows 7)

I've set up a media server using Plex on my PC which is connected to the same network. Everything works, I even used it on my phone and tablet and the server works and everything streams fine.

But my PS4 is just not detecting it. I even used Universal Media Server, and no luck.

The media player plays videos from the USB stick perfectly well, so it's probably not an installation issue. Everything's connected to the safe network, so I don't get why it's not working.

Any help?

So I downloaded Serviio and everything works flawlessly with it. Super happy.

One problem/question: I've specified only one folder to be accessible (called "Movies"). However, in order to access it I have to open the PS4 Media app and go:

Serviio -> Videos -> Folders -> Movies (this is off the top of my head, there might be another one I'm missing)

I see that you can favorite files, but is there any way that I can favorite that folder so all I have to do is select Serviio (or even Serviio -> Movies) to cut out those extra steps?

In the "Presentation" tab you can set the Video and Folder folders to "display content only".
You can save one more click by using the default Movies folder and set it also to display content only (though for this folder each file has to be named in a way that allows Serviio to identity which movie it is), then the files should show up when you click on the Serviio icon.

Tried with PS3 Media Server. My PS4 doesn't like a lot of avis, which strikes me as odd for what is usually the most compatible format, and seems to be selective about which titles it displays. The speed seems to be better than when using PS3, and the thumbnails are cool, but PS3's compatibility clinches the decision to stay with it as a media player right now.

Still, not bad for a first version, not bad at all.

So these reactions aren't very encouraging. I'm still figuring out whether I'll get an xbone or ps4 first, can anyone compare the ps4's current media center functionality to the xbones? Specifically I would like a system that can play video files from my NAS.

Finally tried, and worked flawlessly on my side. Just allowed the connection between my PS4 and the PC, and i can stream without issues. I will try tomorrow with some MKV files i had on my other PC.

My results were mixed when using Universal Media Server. MKV and MP4 files with no frills would play immediately and the seeking was really snappy, which is nice. Videos with subtitles (external or embedded), non AAC or AC3 audio, and videos encoded at a H.264 level higher than 4.2 all refused to play. All attempts at remuxing through UMS didn't work either.

Remember any files have to be in folders in order for them to show.

Yeah, i wonder why that is, now i can atleast see a lot of my MKV's but a lot f them as well as many MP4's dont even work. What bullshit. What chance is there of fixing this?

It worked great for me with Plex Media Server. Everything played smoothly. However it is pretty lackluster in its current form. Seems like a quick job to me. Hopefully they update it in due time and add more features.

Yessss, Megatooon!.At last!. I now have an alternative to using my WD TV live player that takes forever to boot.Almost the perfect OS now!.

Plugged in my had, nothing works. Music and video all in folders says there's no media on device. Oh well i'll stick to ps3 for now.

To break in my use of the Media Player I downloaded the press conferences and decided to stream them from my Plex server. Works perfectly!

Same here, all my MP4s and MKVs have worked using Universal Media Server....I have tried a bunch too...

What settings are you using though? None of my high quality vids run (if they do the sound usually does not work). Haven't changed the settings yet as they work perfectly fine for the PS3

Do we still need to use the same folder structure as on the PS3 (i.e. root level MUSIC, PICTURE, and VIDEO folders, with the corresponding media inside them) for playback off USB?

This is years to late. Who wants to use there ps4 for movies if you can get a raspberry pi loaded with kodi. It plays everything, from DTS-HD to .ts files. you can control it with whatever you want (TV remote out of the box/smartphone by app) and it only needs 3W of Power. Did I mention that a raspberry pi only costs about $30?

No thanks.

Well if you already own a PS4, as I'm assuming most of the people taking an interest in this thread do, then the media player functionality which they just added costs you $0. If you were going to express the difference in price between $30 and $0 as a ratio, it would be infinity! Also the problem with a raspberry pi is that it plays everything except PS4 games :)

It's just nice to finally be approaching feature parity between the PS3 and PS4. The PS4 still can't play audio CDs or let you set your own desktop picture, but at least the DLNA stuff has finally been crossed off the list.

Don't forget that the ps4 needs much more power(and therefore money) for playing a video than a pi. But I now what you mean.

This is going to show everyone just how perpetually-college-student-broke I am, but this literally means I now have a far superior method of listening to music. Based Sony.

I have a nice-ish soundbar hooked up to my TV and it'll be a heck of a lot sweeter on the ears than this 2005 laptop can achieve.

Yeah barely any of my files are working

The PS3 is not getting retired yet,

I'm using Universal Media Server and all my mkvs worked without issue.

Really? Is not playing any MKV on my end. In fact, the only thing is playing is some random youtube video I download. I can't watch anything from Gamersyde or some of my .avi episodes from Slayers :(

Any help, guys? I'm using Universal Media Server and no luck.

On Mac side, using Playback and Plex. Media Player won't notice both at the same time.

Haven't tried (or searched the thread for) options for auto-playing in folders yet, but that's next on my to-do list.

I'm just happy to not have to switch consoles to get this done anymore! Lol
