Mks with Universal Media Server dont work for me.
Everything fine with Serviio
I'm using UMS, sounds like I should move to Serviio instead.

Any idea when the app will be up in the store?
Can't you just tell your media server which folders to access? Most of them let you when you set the server up on your PC..
...plus it doesn't support subtitles or language switching at all
Is there a trick to using a USB drive that I'm not getting - I've tried files with every format that it claims to support and no matter what, I get a message saying: There is no playable media.
Have you put the files into folders, Video, Music etc?
I popped a couple into the Videos folder I made and they all worked a treat. They were . avi files.
For some reason not all MKV's and MP4's dont work. This is very half baked. I think it has to do with certain audio and video codecs involved...plus it doesn't support subtitles or language switching at all
Is this happening with anyone else ? Twice I have streamed a video to my PS4 via Universal Media Server and the streaming stopped about 4/5 through the video.
Sounds more like a buffering or transcoding issue with UMS than the player app. Try increasing the buffer size from the default 200 in UMS ?
Why would you not use the Plex app?It works great for me with Plex media server (Free edition) with all sorts of formats so far.
To be honest I have just tried .mkv files up to 6gb without any issues.
I stream wireless from my Intel core i5 laptop.

We were trying to get this working with some anime for my friend's collection and watch something tonight but that got completely derailed.
Query:
Is there any way to turn on subtitles that aren't baked into the video feed?
This doesn't seem capable of 10bit playback?
Why do some MKVs come out utterly color crushed and artifact laden?
You could always add the subs yourself using other methods (hardcode) and then run it that way. I used to do this many years ago, but I cannot give links or info because it's just been too long, so I couldn't give a good source of information regarding that. What I do remember is that it's not very hard to do.
I know how to hardcode subs but I'm not going to sit around and hardcode a library of thousands of episodes on the off chance we want to watch one spur of the moment, and he doesn't have a computer to do it fast enough to make it worthwhile. So I take it hardcoding into the video stream is the only way to show subtitles.
Fair enough. I hope you find an ideal solution to your dilemma.
What is an App on Mac that I can use to stream to it?

Is there still a (roughly) 4 gb file size limit? Like the PS3?
Jesus. Then wtf is my tv? BRAINDEAD? Huh!?Seriously no subs? Even the built in USB port on my non-smart TV handles mkv and subs.
App is terrible. Downloaded multiple trailers from gamersyde and none loaded on my PS4 while my TV was able to read all of them.
This is not the final version. It's 500 MB when Plex is 40MB, it doesn't have Playready 3.0, doesn't use the Xtensa codec accelerators or player in Southbridge so it uses something under 120 watts to play media...that's a no-no as far as the EU and Energy star power boards are concerned (21 watts is the current requirement for blu-ray).It's a shame that they said it was taking awhile because they didn't want to just copy what was on the ps3, and yet it seems identical to what's on the ps3 except not as functional.
Guess I'll stick to Plex on my Roku, probably for the best anyway.
