New PS4 Media Player launches today - DLNA, MKV support and more

For some reason not all MKV's and MP4's dont work. This is very half baked. I think it has to do with certain audio and video codecs involved...plus it doesn't support subtitles or language switching at all :(

Is there a trick to using a USB drive that I'm not getting - I've tried files with every format that it claims to support and no matter what, I get a message saying: There is no playable media.

Have you put the files into folders, Video, Music etc?

I popped a couple into the Videos folder I made and they all worked a treat. They were . avi files.

Sadly this isn't going to replace using my slower stereo system for media.
I feel like this is a really cheaply built solution.

It has issues seeing files with certain characters in the filename(-).
Some files are showing multiple times for some reason.

And I have a folder of mp4s ripped from dvd with the same software & settings, and some work, some don't :(

I don't have the patience to try to learn all the idiosyncrasies. I want to know that the all the files on the drive will be visible and will play when I click on them. This doesn't deliver.

I've had even more odd behavior there, some mkvs play, until I try to play one that doesn't work, then none of them work. I appreciate the feature finally being added, but the codec support seems shameful in the light of open source stuff like vlc being around.

Edit: And subtitles and multiple audio tracks too...

Seems good from what I've tried. Got the mgsv gamersyde trailers to play but there was stuttering since I used a shitty sandisk drive. Noticed exfat was supported so I might try copying a harmy avchd rip and seeing the results.

Definitely wish there was more codec support. Would love to know sony's issue with flac.

Is this happening with anyone else ? Twice I have streamed a video to my PS4 via Universal Media Server and the streaming stopped about 4/5 through the video.

App is terrible. Downloaded multiple trailers from gamersyde and none loaded on my PS4 while my TV was able to read all of them.

Sounds more like a buffering or transcoding issue with UMS than the player app. Try increasing the buffer size from the default 200 in UMS ?

I can try, but it would be weird if that was the problem, as I have been using UMS for years with my PS3 without any problems.

Worked flawlessly for me, it's the first time I've bothered with this kind of functionality, now I can see why everybody was pissed off this wasn't there from the start.

It works great for me with Plex media server (Free edition) with all sorts of formats so far.
To be honest I have just tried .mkv files up to 6gb without any issues.

I stream wireless from my Intel core i5 laptop.

Why would you not use the Plex app?

Thinking, maybe right now UMS is thinking the PS4 is a PS3. There are media render config files per device. Since the last UMS release was 6/14, probably will have to wait until they update it.

At least through the Plex server, it won't let me play any of my MKV blu ray rips :(

We were trying to get this working with some anime for my friend's collection and watch something tonight but that got completely derailed.

Query:
Is there any way to turn on subtitles that aren't baked into the video feed?
This doesn't seem capable of 10bit playback?
Why do some MKVs come out utterly color crushed and artifact laden?

This is wonderful. Sony is finally giving us DLNA. MKV support is also orgasmic.

You could always add the subs yourself using other methods (hardcode) and then run it that way. I used to do this many years ago, but I cannot give links or info because it's just been too long, so I couldn't give a good source of information regarding that. What I do remember is that it's not very hard to do.

I know how to hardcode subs but I'm not going to sit around and hardcode a library of thousands of episodes on the off chance we want to watch one spur of the moment, and he doesn't have a computer to do it fast enough to make it worthwhile. So I take it hardcoding into the video stream is the only way to show subtitles.

Insane For Sony
This thing works perfectly for me. Plays MP4, MKV, AVI, Images, music from external HDD, and for media server software (I'm using Kodi). It's also far better at MKV playback than PS3. No need for MKV2VOB anymore, and no ridiculously long pause when rewinding 5.1 MKV files. Rewindi/Forward is absolutely instant from both USB HDD and from Kodi

It's a shame that they said it was taking awhile because they didn't want to just copy what was on the ps3, and yet it seems identical to what's on the ps3 except not as functional.

Guess I'll stick to Plex on my Roku, probably for the best anyway.

Fair enough. I hope you find an ideal solution to your dilemma.

They won't run from root, so just create a folder and put all your files in there.

Is there still a (roughly) 4 gb file size limit? Like the PS3?

Use ExFAT to format you HDD and you can have <4gb files.

FWIW - I've only been running off a USB but I've not had any issues so far. Will check out some media serving software tonight...which will then make it 3 devices that can all access a media server (TV, STB & PS4)

Did you have them saved in the root directory? You need to create a folder to store them in if you're running from USB.

Seems a little under-done. Has bugs too. A video that played fine, didn't play again, until I killed the app and restarted it. Also you can't cancel out of it into the system, you have to press the PS button. Still, the PS3 one was not so hot to start with, and got a lot better over time.

I'm still using PS3 Media Server. Tried UMS a while back, but it choked, and I rolled back.

This is not the final version. It's 500 MB when Plex is 40MB, it doesn't have Playready 3.0, doesn't use the Xtensa codec accelerators or player in Southbridge so it uses something under 120 watts to play media...that's a no-no as far as the EU and Energy star power boards are concerned (21 watts is the current requirement for blu-ray).

October-November is likely when Playready 3.0 will be released and when the XB1 and PS4 will announce they are 4K blu-ray players which requires Playready 3.0 (requires TEE level DRM hardware which they support) for the features (digital bridge, Media hub and Vidipath) Sony-Microsoft.com have planned.

See Vidipath Guidelines (gives you an idea of the features that are required by Vidipath) and the leaked Sony Digital bridge proposals or this page for a summary. Playready 3.0 is required for 4K playback but the digital bridge allows downgrading to 1080P and then if the content owner allows, DLNA with DTCP-IP streaming to Playready 1.0 platforms or copying the file to a Phone or tablet with Playready 3.0 for playing.

There are two reasons why I think ooVoo didn't show at E3. 1) ooVoo is going to support file transfer while chatting and possibly video chatting while watching a movie and for sure playing a game. File transfer will require detecting DRM protected content and not allowing it or allowing playing a movie to another platform that doesn't have rights to that movie. 2) HEVC encoding if the PS4 is going to support it for ooVoo like the XB1 does for Skype.

More info on PS3 and PS4 apps here.

I've tried a few mkv files and it works nice, but I have two major issues with it:
- it should allow to transfer the file to hdd
- you can't move freely on the timeline, only fast-forward (or am I overlooking this feature??)
