I thought Sony didn’t use Mediatek?

They're using Mediatek paired with own custom picture processor. The exception are X90H, X85J and X91J (rebranded X90H) models which are using Mediatek alone and thus lack Smooth Gradation feature as well as can't handle full 4k@120.

SMH. I just bought the A80J which has the same limited HDMI 2.1 ports, but since I only have the XSX hooked up it's not an issue for me at this point.

But if you have a receiver that supports HDMI 2.1 can't you hook the PS5, PC and XSX up to that? Why do you need separate ports on the tv?

It only supports HDMI 2.0, and added eARC (which does not require 2.1) in a firmware.

Do you guys think A95K would be a good upgrade over a LG C9?
My main, although slight, issues with the C9 are black crush and not very bright highlights.

Or should I wait for next year's TVs?

I would wait for reviews. A95K should be the best when it comes to highlights and also the most expensive, while A90J or LG G2 might be very close for much less. When it comes to avoiding black crush, Sony is your best bet but LG could be good as well. Every year LG makes some changes when it comes to handling near-black details. For example LG X series (2020) had good shadow details and then a year later LG decided to crush the near-black gamma more to make near-black issues less visible. If there's some progress in the processing for the 2 series (2022) then shadow details could be improved as well.
QD-OLED (so A95K) should be the best with near-black handling thanks to lack of the troublesome white subpixel but I would wait for reviews to avoid unpleasant surprises (by reviews I mean mainly HDTVTest on youtube as he's definitely the best when it comes to testing these things).

How is the x90J a rebranded x90H when it uses the bravia XR processor?

X91J is rebranded X90H, not X90J. X90J has Mediatek + custom processor, both together called XR processor by Sony. X91J has Mediatek only which Sony calls X1 processor.
So despite higher number in its name, X91J has worse processing power than X90J.

A95k would be a good update over everything. If you have the budget for it, dont even hesitate and buy it. Every preview i watched praises it and claims qd oled as the next big leap in display technology.

Ofcourse samsungs upcoming qd oled wont be supporting dolby vision probably and with the sony chipsets being the best in the biz, a95k will be the best representation of the new display tech.

Just got a promotion. So considering the a95k qd oled. Question for people who know the tech more. Oled is really making me want to upgrade the living room tv.

I bought the x90h 55in at launch in 2020. Would you say the visual difference is worth the 4 thousand or so the 65in will cost.

And is there any new features coming out in next year or 2 that would be worth waiting for since my x90h is doing me good.

The A80K is a noticeable upgrade from the X900H.

And the 65” model will be under $2000 later this year.

The A95K will probably be incredible but idk if its worth the extra cost vs the A80/90K.

Hmmm. Maybe that is a better route to go. Is qd oled, a huge visual improvement over oled? Hard to tell in videos online.

It might be worth waiting for the tech to mature but by all accounts it’s a big step up over WRGB OLED panels and would be an enormous improvement over the 90h.

Wait for reviews and see how it stacks up to the A90J as that would save you $1k+. If you do pull the trigger on the A95K I wouldn’t expect there to be any major OLED improvements in the next 3-5 years aside from 5-10% increases in brightness, and certainly not on the tech side since most HDMI 2.1 features aren’t implemented yet on any TVs.

The new Samsung OLED is using the same panel as the A95K and they just got stocked. You should go try to find one and see it in person

Idk it’s probably an improvement, but not worth the extra price.

Like maybe worth an extra $500 but not worth an extra $1500.


For example with Sony, the sale pricing will end something like this:

65” LCD ~ $1100 (X90K)
65” OLED ~ $1800 (A80K)
65 QD-OLED ~ $3000 (A95K)

I can see paying the extra $700 or so for an OLED over an LCD. The improvement in quality is significant and obvious. But idk if it’s worth paying even more for what is ultimately just a better OLED TV. Especially if it’s like another $1000+ extra over an already fantastic looking OLED TV.
