Starfleet is totally a military in Abrams-verse. They were a military in the first movie.

Well after the Kelvin incident, Section 31 and their sympathizers had a much stronger argument for militarization and subsequently took control of parts of Starfleet. That's why the ships were bigger and more heavily armed in ST2009. Not that it did them any good against the Narada

checks out.
Which incidentally is part of the NCIS/JAG-verse! And one of the characters on JAG is a Trekkie! It all goes back to JAG.

I did enjoy Spock beating the shit out of Khan.
You can't just have your heroes talk the villains to death after all.

Well, they were violent conquering despots from the 1990s lol
Even about world wars, Star Trek was optimistic. :p

Into Darkness was just wasted opportunity after enough. Switching Spock with Kirk was a great idea as it serves to flesh out both Spock and Kirk's character arcs. Then they fucking undo it with magic blood 15 minutes later.

Instead of Kirk learning how to be a great captain, they remove him from command again.

Yeah, a lot of the TOS timeline predictions massively break continuity lol

Amazing news.

I hope they will focus more on nostalgia. Old universe, new Enterprise, continuation of the "post-Voyager return" story [ignore the books & whatnot if necessary], with few old actors sprinkled with the new [Riker is a must].

Why did they only announce it for the USA? What about Europe? Who will stream it here?

Deals are presumably still being worked out, but based on the wording below it seems like the show is being shopped internationally for whatever platforms, streaming or otherwise.

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

Which means non-US will get shafted, basically. Really wish they'd stop tying digital distribution to regional distribution deals. I think there's still no legal way for anyone not in the US to watch the last season of Community.

What are the chances of them putting a high quality show on this streaming service?

Seems to me like a ploy to make trekkies to buy into their service, because we'd watch anything Star Trek. I want this to be good, I've been waiting for ages for a new Trek show but I need to see more before I'm fully committed.

It'll be jj verse for sure. But the tv format will mellow the non stop acting stuff and allow for lower budget more cerebral episodes and longer arcs. Cautiously optimistic I guess.

at last, for christ's sake
lol at people calling the first season of DS9 dull. "Duet" alone is better than basically the first season of TNG, half Voyager and the entirety of Enterprise

no prime universe post picard, no jj universe post into darkness/beyond. give me the damn earth romulain war that entertprise wasnt able to give me, and i'll be happy ;.;

Duet is one of the best episodes of all of DS9. Such a great piece that does a great job of hammering home the whole cardassian bajoran occupation and giving Kira more to do other then being the angry military lady she was early on.

But one amazing episode does not make a great season.

Please be good. Please dont be changing formats to focus on special effects and action sequences. Please be about the wonders and mysteries of the unknown like the TNG's best episodes were.

PLEASE BE GOOOOOOD!

I'd expect something in the JJ timeline, but far enough away that they never need to mention it. CBS made a point that the movies and TV aren't related, but they're certainly not jumping back to the older TV timeline.

Mixed feelings on this which won't get resolved until they actually announce more.

I don't know if I'd like to see a return to the prime universe or not. Don't get me wrong, I love the old shows, but I'd rather not see a new series being bogged down from the start with decades of canon, and the merciless army of nitpickers that go along with it. TNG didn't have this problem: TOS wasn't terribly canon heavy in terms of universe building, and there had only been three seasons.

My other concern is budget, and the sets. CG is great for things you can't do with physical sets, but a totally greenscreen production? Hell no! Hopefully they don't go down that route.

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016

There is no way this will have anything to do with 'Abrams Trek' given that Paramount appear to have been cut out of this completely.

I'd guess that it will be set sometime in the future of the TNG universe.

No, it's apparently JJ-verse.

How is that even possible without involving Bad Robot and Paramount?! I know that Abrams has that exclusive WBtv deal but given that CBS and Viacom (Paramount)are two totally separate companies why would they agree to that?

That's just bonkers to me if true. It seems more likely to me that Moonves would do this to fuck with Dauman (sp?) than anything else.

Do people not like Orci and Kurtzman? I tend to be optimistic about them since Fringe is one of my favorite shows of all time.

K&O have a better track record as producers than they do as writers.

I've theorized that (aside from being hack writers) they don't respond well to interference coming down from above (both in terms of, they don't like it, and the quality of their already-hackneyed work suffers).

When they act like producers, I think they give the actual writers more freedom to do what they're good at, because they don't want to be "that asshole" who shoots down good ideas and disrupts plans and makes the writers miserable. Plus, K&O tend to produce shows that they like, not ones that make the most business sense.

Which season has the episode where O'Brien has to deal with a leprechaun?
You're thinking of a Season 1 episode, "If Wishes Were Horses". Although it was Rumpelstiltskin, not a leprechaun. (It was going to be a leprechaun, but Colm Meaney justifiably objected to the idea.)

I'm excited about getting a new Star Trek series. I hope it's good and set in the original Star Trek universe but it will probably be set in JJ Abram's universe.

I quite like them. Their writing moves at breakneck pace which is great for Hollywood blockbusters. The Island, Mission: Impossible III, Transformers 1 and the two Star Trek films are my favourites from them. Transformers 1 was a whopping 144 minutes but feels like one giant action sequence, the same goes for MI:3.

If it has anything to do with the recent movies, I probably won't be watching. The movies were okay, but I don't want a whole series in that timeline.
