I am new to Path of Exile but not action rpgs. Diablo and older baulders gate fan.

I am playing Shadow level 44 and all my gear is unique. I have a poison dagger ethernel knife build along with some other skills that does decent chaos damage.

The issue is the son of a bitch in the last act will not stay alive. I have tried to invest in both armor and evasion to no avail. The larger mobs combined with elite enemies are a real motherfucker. I think I died 5 times the last boss battle.

For those with experience in the game. Is it harder than standard action rpgs or am I a scrub?

Let me help you:

Joking slightly but PoE & PoE2 are the deep end of the pool of the genre. Your build you cooked up is dog shit and yes it may let you face tank through campaign but end game will swallow your ass alive. Uniques are mostly worthless in PoE except very build defining ones or giga rare good roll variants.

You should be crafting your gear. You should be following a guide.

I assume you died to a variety of bosses multiple times to get to end game, but since it retains HP where you left off you figured that’s no big deal. This is the game telling you you are not strong enough. The campaign should be a face roll. Each new season/league the players blast through campaign in 3-6 hours to play the real game, the end game.

The game has over 10 years of leagues/seasons which introduce all new mechanics. You’re playing with like 30 + seasons worth of stuff.

This is a game where after 300 hours the tutorial ends, and after 1000 hours you’re not a total noob anymore.

This isn’t meant to gate keep you or scare you- the pay off is from start to thousands of hours incredible.

Best bet? Finish campaign, then next league start fresh and follow a guide, or jump into path of exile 2 now with far less mechanics and learn to some extent with the 3 week old community.

Lastly, yes the game is hard. The campaign? Child’s fucking play.

Yup, think of d3/d4 as a grandma difficulty lvl while poe2 both in skill required and theorycrafting needed is way above that, i saw streamers(professional ones, who stream for a living all day long every day, not "gamer girls" but men i consider very high lvl of gaming skill/theory crafting with over 10years of experience) get decimated by poe2 bosses multiple times in a row(1-2shotted), especially if they play as melee/glass cannon class

I was thinking of the original PoE. (Pillars of Eternity), which kicked my ass when I first played it back in the day

Ease into Poe with something common, like The Tell-Tale Heart.
Then move on to The Masque of the Red Death.
