Deep into his 30th decade
Try regular ol' petroleum jelly, it cleared up my sons diaper rash very quickly, and it's a lot cheaper than butt paste and the like

Yea that is what the pediatriction recommended, but right now she said it looks like it got slightly infected so we are using antibiotics on it. Move to the petroleum jelly after it heals up. It is looking a lot better though!

When I listed my son's daily meals, I mentioned yogurt a few times. For his pre-nap snack, we gave him the YoToddler stuff and he loves that. However, the other yogurt snacks were something that we just recently started trying. My wife would take Greek yogurt and blend it with fruit, because the YoToddler yogurt had too much calcium in it and my son can't have an overabundance of calcium because it blocks iron from getting into his system, and we just stopped having to give him iron supplements.

Anyway, the Greek yogurt experiment failed. He liked it maybe once or twice but refused to eat it every other time, so we're back to the drawing board. Since he loved his jar of food with butter last night, we're probably just going to give him more of that throughout the day. I wish he could get by just eating the damn bananas he loves so much!

Another new dad here!

Our daughter Ebony-Elizabeth was born on July 27th at 05:05 after a long drawn out affair. Her weight was 7lb 14oz. My partner was in induced on the 25th and had contractions for about 14 hours before a quick 30 min labour. She said the birth itself was a lot less painful that the contractions. I found the experience to be awful ha I can only imagine what it felt like for her!

It's hard to believe that this precious little thing is ours!

I will post pics soon.

Congrats to all other parents old and new in this thread. It has been the most amazing 10 days of our lives so far and it's so exciting thinking about the future.

Our daughter is 12 days old now. Very little sleep for us so far but it's more than worth it.

I'm so confused. What is a travel system? Everything I'm looking at is a car seat and a separate stroller.

Edit: oh it fits backwards on top of the tray?

It lets you take the car seat out of the car and clip it into the stroller to be the stroller seat:

It's a neat idea but in practice I think it's a bit unnecessary.

I'm starting to dread the upcoming second vaccination. The first was fine, as she was a few weeks old and pretty naive generally. Just some pain and then feed and back to sleep.

Her next one, she recognises us and trusts us now, but still naive enough to wonder why we are hurting her :(

It's over surprisingly fast, she'll forget about as you're walking out the door. :)

Anyone have the Britax B-agile?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050GD2AE/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Looks decent, cheaper than I expected. Easy fold, good glide and is lightweight which I thunk my wife would appreciate.

Looks like the City Mini would be the competitor to this.

No sure this one has a parent console.

Just based on my experience and work experience in Ecommerce I'd say go with the City Mini. Hell I would have probably picked the mini if my neighborhood wasn't basically a giant fishbowl with tons of steep hills.

Why that vs. the B-Agile?

I live in Buffalo...everything is pretty flat.

Was leaning towards the B-Agile because the Britax car seat would fit in there...does the City Mini have a car seat that fits in there or would I need to buy an adapter?

Higher resale value and ease of storage. The City Lines have a patented collapse technology which my wife found to be much easier than any other brand we tried, BOB included. Wheels pop off at a snap and it has a locking handbrake as well whereas many strollers are kickstand based. The overall reputation of the brand is extremely high and there's only a $50 difference or so between the two depending on where you buy. Only downside is the need for a carseat adapter but then again you can probably sell it for almost what you paid for it: City and BOB are like Apple products in that way you pay a higher up front cost but you can likely sell them later on down the road for 70 - 80 % of what you paid.

Here in Park Slope Brooklyn the home of stroller wars the hierarchy seems to be buggaboo and uppa baby for the 'cost is no concern types' then city mini for the 'my stroller is as good as yours but I paid half the price' set. Go with the city mini.

Still curious about the diaper thing, anyone have insight into organic (ie 7th Generation) vs traditional chemically treated diapers? The 7th generation stuff seems to be a decent deal I'm just wondering if green diapers are hype or if the types of chemicals found in Pampers and Huggies really are that toxic for growing infants. Part of me calls anti-corporate green BS the other half sees rising rates of childhood illnesses and wonders if there could be something to it?

Gary and I have been through several different brands over the last 5 weeks. We got loads of Pampers for free from the hospital and a friend, and Huggies from a friend. They worked just fine but anytime I open a package of Pampers or Huggies, my throat gets itchy and tight unless I let them air out. I figure anything giving me that reaction is probably not that great for my baby.

We used one package of Earth's Best and I didn't care for them. They seemed stiff and uncomfortable.

We used one package of 7th Generation and I quite liked them. The outside material wasn't as stiff and we never had any leaks or blowouts. I've used 7th Generation at work a lot, too (I'm a nanny/newborn care specialist) and never had a problem.

Our favorites have been the Honest.com diapers though - cute, fit well, hold an unbelievable amount of pee. Honest.com sometimes shows up on deal sites since they're new. I got 300 diapers and 10 packs of wipes for $30 on zulily.com.

None of the hippie-dippy diapers have given me the reaction that Pampers and Huggies did, so we're sticking with those til her thighs are fat enough for the cloth diapers I have.

I hope so!

Our little one is getting less little. nearly 3 months.

Changing rapidly, making noises, smiling lots.

And the last few times she's cried during bath time and especially when getting out, quite hysterically. Just cold?

Good explanation. My wife was at a baby store for 3 hours looking at strollers and furniture and the salespeople there were very high on the Baby Jogger brand so now the wife has her sites set on one of those.

I don't mind getting the adapter...at first she wanted a travel system but we can see that maybe caring individually about the carseat and the stroller is the way to go for us.

Also a good upgrade might be the City Mini GT: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006QH43Y0/?tag=neogaf0e-20

The best diapers I've used by far have been from Jessica Alba's company! www.Honest.com

Really? I've been looking into either Amazon subscription, something organic like 7th generation, or these. $79.99 seems a bit steep though but it seems there are more diapers in their subscription pack than the ones on amazon.

Did you pick them for environmental reasons general worry about the chemicals in traditional diapers?

We use Huggies Little Snugglers with our daughter (6 months old) and haven't had any problems with them. The Amazon delivery system for them is awesome. All bow to the blue line.

Edit didn't see this earlier thanks! I am definitely willing to give Honest a go but am just curious as to whether or not they're overpriced compared to 7th generation: their subscription rate is $31 for 140 diapers is that enough for a month?

Barely. I change my daughter's (a month and a half old) diaper a minimum of 5 times a day.

Diapers are so expensive, there's not really good deal on them in Canada. :(

140 wouldn't be nearly enough for us. Our kid is six weeks old as of yesterday and we've been through about 200 of the 300 Honest.com diapers that we got, plus a lot of the previously mentioned brands that we tried out.

How many diapers you use depends on you and your kid - some parents want their kid to always be dry, others don't care about letting their baby pee a couple of times before changing the diaper. Some kids can tolerate a few pees in one diaper, others scream as soon as even a little bit comes out. My experience is that newborns need 8-12/day and by the time they're toddlers, they're down to 4-8/day depending on if/how they're potty training. The Honest.com bundles are pretty close to my real-life experience as a childcare provider.

Nice thanks if they truly go through that many the bundle of 300 + wipes seems reasonable then. Any experience with 7th Generation?

Alright, pending a trip to the baby store to try out these strollers, I kind of have it narrowed down...

Onto car seats now...what are my options here?

Obviously want something that is safe. How important is it to maybe have it be able to fit in the top part of a shopping cart?

We want something that we can put in a stroller as well with one of those conversion kits (we're either going to get the Baby Jogger City Mini or the City Mini GT).

Was looking at car seats at Babies R Us and they were all fucking gigantic with no handle. Are those meant to be permanent car seats? Am I better off with one with a base I keep in the car so we can lug baby around?

We saw other people do this, but we never did it ourselves. It really depends how often you go shopping together vs alone too. If together, don't bother at all. You can just have one person push the baby around while the other uses a cart. We would do bigger trips together and usually we would only keep smaller trips alone. Our stroller had a pretty decent size basket underneath so it was a cart in itself. I could carry enough stuff around underneath that we never tried the seat on top of the cart route.

Definitely do this. It was so nice to pull the seat out while the baby was sleeping which happens often early on and not wake them. We really miss that now (15 month old) because now when our little girl is sleeping, we usually have to wait or drive around because once she wakes up, she probably won't go back down and that can be bad when she misses a nap and is making up for it. Also nice is having multiple bases so you can just swap the seat to a different car easily.

So in other words, babies r us just had a shitty selection?

Only saw 2 smaller ones with the base and the handle.

Then there were other monstrosities like the Britax Marathon.

It sounds like it, you should have seen plenty of stuff like this there:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12326446

Our Babies R Us had a decent selection of stuff but I think we ended up buying from Amazon in the end. Definitely more than 2. I've noticed Babies R Us really range on selection depending on the location. Some are shitty but some are pretty nice. Another option, look to see if there is a Buy Buy Baby nearby to just look at what they have.

I know all babies are different, but she will scream like you've never heard for a couple seconds, you'll feel awful but she will be fine in no time. We have our 6 month round next week, I still hate them but luckily ours really isn't phased by them after that 30 seconds of crying.

I've used them a lot at work and we used their newborn size briefly. I've never had a problem with them. Some of the families I worked for had trouble using them overnight when their kids started sleeping 6+ hours and weren't getting a middle of the night diaper change.

It seems like every time I come in this thread you all get me all worried about something. First it was that jumpers and walkers are bad, now pampers and huggies are poisonous? I guess I will do some research and maybe try out those honest diapers...

Is there no freaking regulation on baby products, of all things you would think is safe. We're about to start her on rice cereal, any brand I should go with?

Please, please don't do that. It's really dangerous. Even though some infant car seats will click into place on top of a cart, they're not meant to do that. It can weaken the clips, and it's not secure on the cart. Babies have been seriously injured and have died from infant seats falling off of carts and carts tipping over with infant seats clipped onto the top part of the cart. AAP has a bit of info about it. It's also in my newborn care specialist manual as one of the things to teach parents not to do.

If you have to shop alone with a baby, carry them in a front pack or sling. Otherwise have someone else push them in a stroller or leave the baby home with someone.

Thanks for the heads up. We have one of those Baby Bjorn things on our registry. I'll let my wife know this is a no-no.

edit: The article you linked doesn't really say anything about putting the car seat in there.

This post on a forum links the same one as you, but nothing in there mentions car seats. http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=94954

I can see why it's dangerous...just stating the links don't specifically mention car seats.

They do mention car seats :) Infant carrier = removable infant car seat, as opposed to a convertible car seat you'd leave in the car or a stroller, wagon, or front pack alternative mentioned in another part of the link.

Don't get too worked up about it. Just remember, just about everyone here grew up without that stuff and we all turned out fine. Just keep that in mind as a reality check. The thing with diapers is every baby is different so it's not so much that there is a best diaper out there, that there is a diaper that works for you and your baby. Everyone will swear by something and curse at something else. If you're happy with what you're using now and it works, just stick with it.

As for rice cereal, we tried Earth's Best rice cereal. Since it was her first food, we went with something organic. We aren't all high on going all organic but in the beginning we tried to start with that before branching outward. Our girl hated it. We thought feeding her was going to be tough. Rice cereal never worked even with stuff mixed in. However, she did like the oatmeal which is a perfect substitute for rice cereal. Turns out our girl loves food and even has a rep for being a good and big eater at her daycare, but we never would have guessed from starting with rice cereal.

We've been switching between rice and oat cereal with our kiddo (Earth's Best brand too). She seems like to both equally.

We just started introducing avocado and sweet potato last week. It's a lot thicker so she's a little confused, but still going well.

Speaking of this, here's a tip for any first time feeders: film it. Anything new you try in the beginning, film it because you'll get some of the best reactions out of your baby. The first time we gave our girl sweet potato was just pure joy watching her. She loved it so much. Since she loves food in general, it took awhile to get that "What the hell is this?" look. Still, it's a moment that's great to have.

Baby-GAF:

What kinds of gifts did you receive for your baby shower? Wife and I have picking things up which we don;t think people would be willing to gift (due to price) but my sister (who has two daughters and has been to A LOT of baby showers) says we should hold off on buying stuff because people do actually get you decent stuff.

So far we've purcahsed a crib, matching drawer set and hutch, a gliding rocker, a swing, mobile play pen, and most recently a stroller/car seat set.

Did anyone receive any gifts like the stuff I mentioned? I always thought the gifts would eb more like baby clothes and diapers. I've never been to a baby shower.

Some people definitely get this stuff. It is best to wait till after the shower since you might get some of this stuff. Also, definitely use a registry if you aren't already so you get the specific things you want and there's less likely to be duplicates if people follow the registries. The best part about the registry is that they'll give you a one time discount purchase on your total order for items your friends and family didn't get you. So in the worst case scenario at least make a registry of the big items you don't think you'll get and save some money for yourself. We used the registry discount for so many things.

That's some great info on the discount. Thanks.

Yeah, we're planning on doing a registry.

We got all the big stuff (stroller, car seat, adapters, crib, etc.) at showers from parents, grandparents and friends. We had no problem paying for the stuff ourselves and the discount would've been nice, but we actually had to find more things to put on our registries as people totally cleaned them out.

Supreme, it depends on how affluent and/or cheap your guests are. Most of the stuff you won't need right away, unless it's something you fear won't be available if you wait on it for some reason. As others have said, most places give a one time discount for any items that weren't purchased on your registry. And another reason to wait, is that you'll definitely be getting some gift cards and gifts that you will probably want to return for credit. So, after your baby shower, you could end up with a bunch of gift cards and return credit to spend. Might as well spend it on items you waited on or didn't receive from your registry. Lastly, on the invitation, I recommend kindly requesting gift receipts. It'll make returns a lot easier.

That's a really cool tip. Seems obvious, but they're the best kind! Thanks!

Also as you mentioned reality checks, this really important too. That said I think about the millions of years of ancestry that comedown to me (yes beyond humanity!) and I marvel that I'm here. It's easy to say, "and we're all ok", but it's super easy to be bias considering those that aren't ok aren't here to say it.... Kind of like the opposite of how all the negative comments make it to the Internet.

Well, the baby "dropped" yesterday, which according to my wife and her doctor that it'll be between 2 - 4 weeks, most likely. The house is ready, the rooms are all set, the go-bags are packed and the portable devices are on standby.

This will be numero dos for us, and our first girl. I've been told over and over again that the experience of having two children is far, far more trying than just having one. Any other parents here gone through that/have any pointers?

As a starting point, my son will be three on 10/3, and he's the most polite dude in his class at school. Thanks in advance!

I found 2 to be much more of a challenge than just one. 3 didn't seem to add much more of a challenge. I think we hit a chaos ceiling with the first 2 that it just didn't really seem to be much more work. It'll be fine, though. I had 2 boys first, and the two of them together can be complete insanity at times. Having opposite sexes should be a bit more low key once she gets a bit older and you guys adjust.

Also, just found out number 4 is on the way. If you would have told me 9 years ago that I'd be married with 4 kids by the time I was 31 I'd have said how utterly crazy you were. 3 was our cutoff, but I guess both of us are just I incredibly fertile people. Oh well. Guess its vasectomy time.
