Mike Hawthorn was the first.

...and people wonder, why I don't post in F1 threads anymore...

At least make an exception for pre-season, yes? :)

Mansell did it (before later returning for a couple of races).

Mansell was nearly 40 at the time. He also drove what is considered the greatest F1 car ever built (92 Williams). I mean, anyone on the grid would have won the championship in that car.

But we know Mansell was good during his career so he never gets thrown into the mix of bad F1 champions.

Hit and run. Barely manages to win the title and then he packs up his bag and flees. Mercedes betted on the wrong guy and now they have to crawl back to Lewis. Can't wait to see you suspending Hamilton, Toto you tosser.

So... towards the end of their career?
Driving the greatest F1 car build that season?
Anyone could win in that car?

Have to say, a lot of similarities here.

Life is short. Sounds like he had to make crazy sacrifices with his family to make this happen. I assume he's a millionaire now so sounds like a good, but hard, decision to me.

This was really crazy news. But I can imagine he's happy to retire with the title - can't do much more than wish him the best.

It'll be interesting to see who fills his seat for 2017. I would love to see Valtteri there.

This wasn't something that I expected. Last year when his wife was having serious problems with birth - sure. But not now.

Good luck on the next chapter in his life. I didn't like him as a driver, but I respect him choosing his family now that he fullfilled his biggest dream.

Lol, they didn't back anyone more than the other.

I would guess Mercedes will want a clear number two driver for next year so they can focus on getting a grip on the new regs without the distraction of two fairly equally matched drivers and in-fighting/rivalry

Yeah. As a spectator, I'm really salty.... Mercedes are the Mayweather of F1 world, They're going to bring the F1 crashing down with their dog and pony show.
Shouldn't you be thankful for a close season then?

Nah, they'll want somebody competitive at the very least if they can. Doesn't matter though, if Hamilton gets unlucky or has some mistakes over a season, it will all happen again. Interesting note from Benson on Twitter:

But... How about Bottas? Quick, Wolff manages him, calm, would be no trouble. Do a deal with Williams...

He's got a ton of money, he's got a world championship, no one can take that away from him., and he wants to see his kids grow up, it's a no brainer.

It's a bit like Stoner, I'd probably do exactly the same in his position

Shame Hulk signed with Renault already. Poor guy will never get a chance.
No luck at all for that guy

Wehrlein isn't ready and maybe never will. Didn't impress me at all. But he is their guy and a safe No. 2 water carrier.

Must take Courage to let that 17 mil go..

Screw all the thoughts about Nico retiring because that's what you would have done. I don't watch sports to see regular people. I watch sports to see people driven to win at all costs. That's what makes the greatest champions the greatest champions. They'll do anything to win. They become addicted to it, not get out when the gettings good. Sure, they're usually assholes with gigantic egos and terrible family people, but I don't care.

Big respect to Nico, he's achieved what he wanted in F1 and leaving on his own terms. Quite the decision to take, but all the best to him.

but he won? his drive kept him in the sport for 10 years

Haha! Suck it, Hamilton! Feast upon your shame!

More seriously, good luck, Rosberg! Seeing you beat Hamilton was the only thing that made this season worthwhile outside of Danny's shoe celebrations.

what!? WHAT?!.
Did not have him as a favourite driver, but he sure did give Hamilton a match (and won the championship this year!).

So he will not be driving next year??

The difference is that Mansell didn't have one of the greatest F1 drivers ever as his team mate in 92.

Man, reading that statement. He really gave his all for this championship, having to shut out his family, needing all that recovery time, putting his family to the back-seat, etc.

Meanwhile Hamilton can match him while hanging out with celebrities, jetting all over the world, and having a great time.

Understandable why he'd retire rather than spend any more years either toiling away just to match someone who can beat him for fun, or getting trounced if he doesn't put in 110% at all times and destroy his life. Smart decision.

And people said I was too harsh calling Hamilton fans shitstains...

I respect his decision and he has good reasoning. Good call Rosberg. I'll miss the drama and action next year. Time to be a family man
, until he gets bored and decides to return

He did win at all costs. He sacrificed a new wife and family and put everything below his chase for a title. Now he has it, he simply wants to move on.

Hamilton found the documents proving Mercedes rigged the whole thing for Nico. This "retirement" is the compromise.

Mercedes rigged it all from the start, but Hamilton's talent won out for two years. This year it was too much. I wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes had hit men out for Hamilton right now, maybe for the past 6 months.

He likes his family more than he likes winning. There's nothing wrong with that, for a regular person. Once again, I don't watch sports to watch regular people.

Hmmm, I really didn't see this coming at all. Good luck to him in his future endeavours.

Next season is going to be interesting.
