I have to say I really respect him now placing family back on top. He reached his goals after giving it his all. In the future he can race again, but it just won't be in F1.

@MercedesAMGF1 @F1 @MercedesBenz @MercedesAMG should I pick up guys??

Hammy will crush him.

And people said I was too harsh calling Hamilton fans shitstains...
No, you're not harsh. You're just lacking in the reading comprehension department. Can't wait until you manage to figure out I'm a Ferrari fan. Calling a group of fans "shitstains"? Good grief, right back at you.

This is equivalent to Sena quitting the sport after beating Prost for the first time in 89. Even comparing this nobody to Sena is blasphemy.

Congrats to him.

He's had a long enough career, is rich as shit, won a bunch, and has a family. Now's he's proven he's a champion. Go live life.

I'd hate if Mercedes just puts wehrlein in the seat. Not really impressive at Manor and would just be a #2 driver.

Hamilton found the documents proving Mercedes rigged the whole thing for Nico. This "retirement" is the compromise.

Mercedes rigged it all from the start, but Hamilton's talent won out for two years. This year it was too much. I wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes had hit men out for Hamilton right now, maybe for the past 6 months.

Are you being serious? I'm sorry, i just couldn't tell any more.

Wonder how easily Bottas could get out of from that one year Williams deal. Toto and Mika are his managers so at least he has good connection to Mercedes... Would be also a lot safer choise compared to someone like Wehrlein. Of course I have some finnish bias in my post =P.

I saw this pop up on a news feed and thought it was a joke. Seriously? It hasn't even been a week! Talk about out of nowhere.

Its like when you're competing with friends and you have that one friend that finally wins, then they say they have to go home so they can leave with that smug look on their face. Definitely think family is a huge part of it, he's made his money, he has his WDC, he has a young child, he's pretty well set to enjoy it now.

The next question, does Merc sign on another fast driver, or bring in a number 2? More over, how many drivers just signed new contracts are currently kicking themselves or deperately reading the fine print on their contract?

General rule on GAF and the internet: When you ask 'Is this for real? Is this serious?' it's almost always safe to assume it's not.

I got a great kick out of the wild conspiracy theories of Hamilton fans this year and was just having a bit of fun riffing off that.

Haha yeah, after seeing all those posts on Mercedes' facebook page, it seems a lot of people actually believe the conspiracy theories.

The hitman part took it to another level though.

Wow. What a move. Good on him. Achieved his dream, now to retire with tens, more probably hundreds of millions in the bank, enjoy family life, not put his life at risk every two weeks. Not a bad life ahead of him. I'm sure he'll stay in F1 in management or something for some pocket money.

What a surprise.

By the way I'd LOVE to see Alonso at Mercedes, I just don't see McLaren giving him a good car before he retires. IF he does move though it's then guaranteed that Mercedes' car for next year will be a dud! Just the curse Alonso seems to have. Fernando 'should be 3/4 times World Champion by now' Alonso

I guess Nico couldn't recreate whatever fucking black magic voodoo spell he put on Hamilton's car and decided to bow out on a high. On the real though good luck Nico and enjoy your family. It's not everyday you hear about this happening, but maybe he figured he didn't have another title fight in him. He has his priorities right and now I wonder who they'll replace him with. Either you get some rookie push over to be thrashed by Hamilton...which would sort of be comedic in it's own right, but at the same time I want to see Hamilton put some work into beating his next teammate.

I heard this earlier and was really surprised by it, though it's understandable why he decided to step back. I'm curious to see who gets his seat.

I would like to see Hamilton try different types of racing as well, from lmp to gt he could have a lot of fun.

Hamilton in a Bentley at the Spa 24? Awesome.

So Merc will finally have an actual second driver.

Which also makes me.realise that there are no actual clear 1-2 drivers in any team this year are there?

There are obvious performance differences with rookies and such, but not equal talent drivers being designated a position in the team.

I think both Alonso and Vettel have #1 clauses in their contracts that means if they have only one version of the upgrade, they get it first. Or if they need to split strategy, they get the favourable one. But with their partners being Kimi and Button, it's not really been invoked.

Guess it just depends who Mercedes get. I mean, the top guys have contracts... But everyone has a price

As in most sports, contracts mean basically nothing. Everyone wants to speculate some top drivers going to Merc; Alo, Max, Vet. They're fine where they are and Merc would be wise to avoid those headaches. Personally I'd love to see Perez there.

Silly season back in force now. Longest F1 calendar ever and I'm already itching for next year.

If it was last season, I could see them having an unproven driver for the top level like WEH, but the rule changes mean that the Mercs might have a harder time next year.

What's Kovalinen up to? ...

It's a bit like Stoner, I'd probably do exactly the same in his position

Good call on the Stoner comparison.

That was arguably had a greater impact on the sport as Stoner is considered one of the most talented riders ever to swing a leg over a bike ever, where as with all the best will in the world Rosberg will be quickly forgotten.

I am going to make it through this year if it kills me
Well, huh.
One and done.🤔

Stoner fought tooth and nail for his two championships.

I have quite some respect for this decision, despite him not being my favourite driver ever. F1 is the pinnacle, but too many drivers seem to cling on when they don't have a hope of winning just to be in F1, it seems. Nico would probably still be a winning driver next year but has basically said "meh, fuck it."

Wow didn't expect that, but I guess he has money and wants to focus on his family. Best to him.

I would love to see Alonso back at the top, but he would have to take a big pay cut. Not gonna happen. Although the "Spanish press" is reporting he's negotiating with Mercedes

It makes sense. He had to get out of Ferrari and the McLaren experiment hasn't worked. I would laugh if Merc ended up lacking the pace from the front runners though after Alonso went there.

I think even Mclaren would be ok with releasing him, he's pretty expensive and the car is not going to challenge for podiums or victories.

I don't think Mercedes are going down the field, winning 19 out of 21 races and it could've been 21 out of 21 easily, they're going to keep winning in 2017.

Bold move, but I'm fine with it. He achieved his goal, and now he can focus on family and normal life.

Next season just got way more interesting, a really important racing seat slot now needs to be filled. If tradition holds up, Pedro De La Rosa will be chosen оut of the blue. :D

Nico is the hero we deserved but not the one we need right now. Go live your life man, you're forever the champion and will be missed :')

Is it too late for Juan Pablo Montoya to come back WWE style?

Yep, he's maxed out his career, he's got a family and he can use money as toilet paper. Nothing more to achieve in life, really.

On his replacement, I'd love to see Pascal promoted in a similar way to how Verstappen was. If that's not possible, then I think Alonso will be the easiest to pry from his contract.

Truly the tragic figure of formula 1. I loved him at Ferrari and still have a soft Spot for him. Can't warm up to Vettel at all.

Smart man. Goes out on top. Goes on to new ventures, and gets to spend pressure free time with his family, and all of that at a very young age. Most people would love to have accomplished what he's done at his time of life.
