It's taken Warner Bros. 11 years to get 'Superman Returns' off the ground. Not exactly faster than a speeding bullet. Now 'X-Men' director Bryan Singer's at the helm in Australia. An exclusive visit.

Sept. 12, 2005 issue - Surely they're not going to kill Superman. Inside a soundstage in Sydney, Australia, Brandon Routh, as the Man of Steel, crawls across a black, wet wasteland, pursued by the evil Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) and Luthor's three henchmen. One of the thugs grabs Superman by his hair and shoves his face into a dark puddle, holding the hero's head underwater as he struggles for air. Luthor strides up behind Superman,
stabs him in the back with some sort of Kryptonite shiv and whispers a sentence so horrifying (and, for now, top secret) into his ear that Superman cries out in agony. He staggers to his feet, stumbles and topples backward over a cliff. Luthor walks to the edge, looks down into the abyss and sneers,
"So long, Superman." Playing this scene just once would be rough. Routh will be beaten and tormented for hours. "He's very heroic normally," says director Bryan Singer, sipping an iced vanilla latte. "You just happened to catch him on a bad day."

BR.com also received these 2 publicity stills but the provider altered the images himself it seems so the background, composition and lighting look completely off:

What the heck? :lol

The promo shots not only look really strange and almost bad fan-artish.

Why does it look like Superman's cape is bigger in the first shot?

That's Super-Man?

:(

He doesn't look buff enough and his face doesn't seem right.

I guess maybe it's because Reeve has always been SM to me.

Whoever messed around with those two shots did a horrible job :\

This is cool.

Reeve was even scrawnier than this guy

I disagree. Reeve appears to be a bigger to me.

Reeve is barrel chested, more like Super-Man. This guy can't even compete with Reeve IMO.

i guess its just a matter of preference. When i see those pics of Reeve you posted, he looks skinny and lean to me. I've always thought that of Reeve, but to me, it was alright to have a scrawny/lean Superman in the movies, because a superbuff, comic book style Superman would look silly as hell trying to pull of "mild mannered, clumsy reporter Clark Kent". Its one of those comic book things, like Batman's spandex costume, that i think is better off changed for live action.

I always wondered what I'd look like in the Superman costume...and now I'm sad to say I know.

What the hell is that crap.

Anticipation for this movie -1000

If that scrawny dude is the best they could do then someone needs to clone Reves immediatly.

I love these fanboy anticipation rollercoasters. UP! DOWN! UP!

Look at Reeve's neck.

Now look at pencil neck in the first post.

There's not much definition in Reeve's costume, but he's not scrawny.

Damn, those pictures look like shit. What the hell is his cape made out of?! Looks too think.

Kate Bosworth is a horrible Lois Lane. I want to see pictures of Spacey!!!

Superman:"BEHOLD! MY FIST!"
Lois:"MY GOD, I'VE NEVER SEEN SO MAGNIFICENT A FIST!"

Superman: "See - it's not that big. This'll totally work."

Not only does Reeves look a lot manlier than Routh, but the costume he wears look so much less awkward than the new one.

Reeves was THE perfect Superman and I didn't watch those films until after reading a bunch of comic books and seeing the old cartoons. He just has such a classic, timeless look.

EDIT: Martha Kent did one HELL of a job on Routh's Supes outfit. How did she turn a basketball into that elaborate 'S'?

I would not be shocked if this movie totally bombs. Going from Reeves to that will probably send people into a state of shock (Reeves was just a naturally big guy). That guy looks like any random geek you would find working in comp usa. Realistically though wouldnt superman be a fat slob because he can never really work his muscles? They are getting closer to realizing my vision.

The "Ken" hair's just not working. I always disliked that about Dean Cain's Superman as well. Of course that didn't stop me from watching the show as this won't stop me from enjoying the movie.

Man this is really looking like shit. Kate Bosworth looks wrong, as does Routh. WTF is up with that leather cape?

Who wants to bet Returns completely disappoints and X3 shocks everyone by being good?

That'd be a damn fun thread.

It isn't possible for Brett Ratner to make a good movie.

And everyone in this thread is bashing it based on still images, they haven't seen the footage.

Red Dragon.

(And even though he usually sucks, the first Rush Hour was pretty funny back in the day.)

He can make a good movie, just like Singer can make a bad one. And I'm sorry, but everything I've heard of Superman storywise sounds really lame, just like the lame deaths and shit in X3.

:lol Man what the fuck. Those pictures don't give me hope for the movie. He looks terrible as supes in the first one and the second one is just all kinds of shitty...

I have always wondered about this when reading Superman comics. Why does Superman have muscles? There really isn't any practical way for him to exercise to get that body(unlike Batman), there aren't many battle with villains that requires him to use full strength(Dark Sied, Doomsday, and Zod for example). The same thing with Wonder Woman too.

he goes into space and uses meteors like medicine balls.

i've wondered about this too. Like when he fights Batman and Batman bloodies his lip or cuts up his face. So a bullet can't break Superman's skin but Batman's fists can? I know Batman is a badass but damn, he's human.

First time I saw Batman "threw" Superman or even hit him(when he is almost as fast as the Flash), I went like WTF too. I guess Superman's weaknesses are kryptonite, magic, and Batman's punches.
