Digital Foundry / (We) have a dilemma for games running at 120hz. If you are using a VRR monitor, locked 120hz isn't really "required", so those graphs where a game shows an inconsistent frame time or framerate drops, won't really be as big an issue as say, 60fps dropping every so often. The beauty of VRR is running in hat inconsistent 80-120hz range.

i hope that you are aware that this game will run and look the same on 10tf console with the fastest IO and no bottlenecks ;)

its not exactly a high bar to meet, note performance is not just TF. Let see how ps5 runs this game, as a racing game without RT and effects should be comfortable 4k60 so something does not add up.

In "resolution" mode, the game runs in an apparently uncapped frame rate; this bounces between 30fps and 60fps, which averages out to roughly 40fps. This mode's dynamic resolution maxes out near 2160p and falls as low as an apparent 1440p. (Compared to Xbox One's heavily aliased DiRT 4, the jump in resolution this time around is very appreciated.)

Drop to DiRT 5's middle "frame rate" setting, and you'll see a mild hit to texture pop-in on the ground ahead of you, along with a noticeable hit to shadow pop-in in the near distance. Settings are otherwise mostly left intact, other than a dynamic resolution that scales down lower, while the frame rate gets close to, but doesn't lock to, 60fps.

"At this point in time I don’t own an HDMI 2.1 TV, so I was unable to play at 4K/120Hz, but I was able to play at 1440P/120Hz using my monitor, and it was a fairly consistent 120FPS, but whilst Performance mode didn’t seem to remove anything visually from the game, there’s definitely some sacrifices made to hit the 120FPS target.

As evident in the side-by-side image, you can see that shadows definitely aren’t as nice as they are in the Image Quality/Performance modes, the clouds don’t look as nice, and the crowds have been completely removed from the game. Now, this isn’t really surprising as obviously, something had to give in order to hit 120FPS, but with the game being a buttery smooth 4K/60 in other modes, I think most people will end up opting for Visual mode."

Press Start say buttery smooth in the other modes, so until DF or someone does a proper pixel count and frame rate analysis on final code i'd hold off.

Looks like people are just taking their impressions of frame rate not actually measuring them.

FH4 is getting Ultra settings 4k60fps on the XSX, so my guess is bad development. If the game is the same (or slightly worse) on the PS5 then we can lay the blame squarely at the developers feet. Maybe the game engine just doesn't scale well or they just have not had enough time to optimize. If you think about it, the game is targeting 9 different platforms (PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, Stadia, and PC).

That being said, the game does look good, just look at the Gamespot 4k upload (not IGN).

Said this in the other thread, but after all of this time and waiting, this cannot be what Microsoft leads with in terms of its first official look at next gen game footage. It’s fucking insane.

They must have something a lot better. Must have, surely? Why aren’t they putting any of it out? Is this really what they’re leading with?

This is good honestly.

You really thought this wasn't possible? Here is one.

Let me be very clear, that I think this is bullshit, and Demon Souls looks amazing in action, but that when you pause games from Youtube videos, you can obviously turn it into something that doesn't look impressive.

Mate, that still doesn’t look as bad as Dirt pic... which has no motion blur.

Aren’t you super pissed off as a big Xbox fan that they’ve decided that this is the first real look at next gen game footage they’ve gone with? Aren’t you a little worried about what it might indicate?

Is that a sttutering and screen tearing showcase?

Couple of things at play here. XSX dev systems coming in hot, though I expect similar compromises on PS5. Plus Developer skills/choices and time they have been able to dedicate to it. This will be looked back on as one of those rough launch games chucked out before it was ready on both systems.
I don't think this gameplay really helps XSX with its power narrative, specially with the performance numbers, it's just going to fuel console warring. But hey, if this is what it takes to show everyone that games will look almost identical on both platforms I think it's not as bad as it seems.

It indicates games won't look as good at 120fps? That might well be across the board.

Occam's razor will indicate that Codemasters has not optimized the game properly. Or we can put tin foil hats on and say the Xbox Series X is a bad console and everything has been a lie with regards to its specifications and performance, and this massive bombshell has somehow been kept under wraps despite thousands of people from across the globe been working on the hardware for the past 2 years.

It still looks way worse than the actual footage in motion. But I'm not worried about the XSX at all, I still expect that 3rd party games will look better on the XSX.

That they are showing this as next-gen footage only has to do with Microsoft buying the marketing rights for this game. So I don't see this as any indicator.

do we know if the game use vrs ?
this tech will not help to win still image screenshot war especially against slow paced 30 fps games.
and i'm not saying it looks good btw but that the tech make it worst in this kind of comparison.

Horrible screen tearing there... quite disturbing.

Well, well. It looks good to be honest. Here's what they said about the performance:

I'm really interested to see what is Treyarch going to do to reach 4K/120fps in COD.

EDIT: According to Jeff Grubb, there are 3 modes: Image Quality, Frame Rate and 120Hz Mode. 1080p/120fps confirmed by his video, damn, how is COD going to reach 4K/120!
That's why CRT monitors are the real choice for next gen... 1080p will look way more crisp on CRT compared to a Flat screen 😂 😜

This motivated to open mine (day one pro)
she was as clean as the one in the video (no dust at all on the fan blade or on the visible part of the heat-sink)
it seems to remove noise of mine it would require to change thermal paste.
As a quick check, launch the Pro in safe mode (turn off, hold down power button until beep at about 3secs, then release) and do the rebuild HDD database option - in case it is bad HDD reads that is causing the noise. Also try removing any unused user profiles, so your system has ideally only 1 user profile and isn't sync trophies/data for unused stuff in the background.

If these tweaks make a difference, it is maybe worth backing up your saves and removing the HDD to -get the PC to check the drive health (SMART) and remove all partitions and - format thoroughly as NTFS with a PC. You'll then need to download an reinstall the OS from playstation's website and install via USB stick once the HDD is back in the Pro,

If you do go the thermal paste route, I would advise you use a small amount (a single drop in the middle, rather than the 3 drops or cross method for PC) as if you get any on the thermal sensor in the moat area, the system will need reopened because automatic shutdown will happen. I cleaned my(Ps4) chip with a wipe(slightly dried huggies water wipe) and an old toothbrush. I also locked the heat clamp down and then reopened multiple times before rebuilding. That way I could see if I had too much paste and could then repeatedly wipe excess paste off the heatsink, rather than the chip - but if it gets in the moat are then a full clean and start over is required.

i only have noise problem in specific known games so i don't think it's related to the storage (some games are on internal other on external too)
i don't think i will go the thermal paste route . Why ? ps5 will be there in a month :D

Yep, the performance looks bad, although the game itself doesn't look terrible in some places.

I'm not the easiest to please on this, I absolutely hate the dirt series and how "comic booky" (if that even makes sense) it is. Just knowing it started creeping into all the work they do, we go from the best rally sim in Dirt Rally to a barely passable game in Dirt Rally 2.
No amount of fireworks and particle effects make me forget how bland the courses are. The car controls pretty much the same on all kinds of terrain. Looks like the need for speed of rally games and to top it all off, it doesn't even look visually impressive.
Put it side by side with the footage of GT7 and you'll see what I mean.

I thought that, but GoT was unplayable at late night and I wanted to finish it, and I had a feeling SW squadrons was going to be the same, thankfully the system is reasonably quiet most of the time while I'm playing squadrons.

didn't launched got in a while (i will try a reconciliation on ps5) but it was not too bad on mine.

i think this will be another case where in bad weather condition the game will look great, but on sunny day it will look flat/terrible

Still too early to be concerned... Tbh though PS5 could have similar issues to begin with for all we know 🤷‍♂️... But anyway still this isn't good to see.
I'm suprised Gears 5 isn't compatible yet 🙄

Why is it that Xbox's defense force needs to mention the PS5 every time something is broken?

What we know so far, according to multiple reports

  • It runs hot
  • at least one person seems to have told Dealer it has shut down due to heat implying both airflow and fw issues (fans didn't kick up)
  • crashes
  • not compatible with some of the biggest games
  • framerates are all over in both next gen showings (Dirt 5) and back compat (sekiro).
Why not report what it is? could be preview software, hardware, or it could be seriously messed up. The PS5 has nothing to do with the above.
