On it's own the color scheme of the "S" is actually growing on me, although I would have preferred a more subdued approach with subtle black accents rather than the whole grill thing they got going on.

I think you're right in that they wanted to maintain consistency in their S and X lines so they kept them white and black respectively. The problem I have is that they felt the need to add Series to the branding. It just feels unnecessary, of course it's a "series" they're both Xboxes of the same generation. But by adding the word series you come to expect, or at least I do, congruent products but they couldn't look more different.

Expectations subverted I suppose.

The issue is, as a bunch of people point out... why is Playstation 5 singled out and XSS and XSX not mentioned? Was it because there was no original article claiming how many the XBOX team plan to have produced? No way to know. Additionally, as some point out, the timing on this "news" is awfully coincidental to when Sony is going to have a streamed event.

This is exactly how FUD is spread. It's textbook. Maybe it's legitimate, maybe it's not, but it is exactly how it's done. Practically a master class in it.

And the 7nm node has unbelievably high yields, hence the rumored "Nvidia killer" and the lower prices Nvidia all of a suddent decided to throw out at Ampere.

The consoles are in production for months now, yields don't all of a sudden drop , they normally improve over time as the process matures.

TSMC start 30,000 7 nm wafers a week, so lets say for simplicity its 100 big die. In 1 week they know the full normal distribution of 300,000 die to 99.97 % confidence.

There will be no surprises in parametric yields of ps5 silicon, they will know after the firts week as 300,000 is enough to go on.

It is not possible that the yeild drops without a material or a tool issue, it will be a known issue already, thats a fab issue not a Sony one and applies to every customer as TSMC fab is full capacity..
 
Hey guys I just heard some more bad news.... so during production and assembly, one of the PS5 wifi antennas wasn't working properly, so in order to account for that one faulty part on one PS5, Sony had to cut the PS5 GPU down to 3.9 TFs and downclock. Big Jimmy Sony fucked up big time guys.

So now it looks like Series S is more powerful. Why did Sony take this approach? Because of how scared they are of having another giant hardware fuck up like the Xbox 360... wait... that was Microsoft..

I think the visuals will get upgraded. Looks like a custom unreal engine. I still think unreal engine is meh. This would look great in decima.

But Im guessing this will get updated visuals. And a nice showcase. Housemarque probably have best particle effects out there even better than suckerpunch.

Going to be enjoyable whatever happens.

0.09 at start of N7 = ~80% yields for Navi 10 at the start of production 15+ months ago or ~94% yields for the small 74mm mm^2 Zen 2 chiplets.

Sony are doing that event tomorrow (16th) at 8pm UTC*, but there's also events happening on 17th (Thursday), about some PS5 showcase from retailers, and then Sony have a secret panel at PAX on 18th (Friday)?

So, the price will be announced ... sometime before Saturday? Maybe? :|

(* - yes, I did just get that anal about the time, even with me being in England and it being BST right now)

Exactly, this is the biggest load of bullshit fud i've actually seen here, it blows my mind :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It would be way more likely they are expecting distribution issues and then lower the production as a consequence... anything else, but not yields :)

Of course there will also be games that will get a PS5 patch which makes them PS5 games and don't need to run in a BC mode...

This was all made clear in Cerny's presentation but sadly people misunderstood what he said which caused wrong info to be spread.

There is just one event this week - the 16th at 9pm BST. The email above mentioning an event Thursday is just due to timezones. 9pm BST on the 16th is actually on the 17th in Aus / NZ local time.

Please quote the part of the article that says current yields are 50% or that they only just found this out.

Oh right... you can't because you're talking shit and stirring it around.

No where does it say it is a current issue. No where does it say they only just found this out. All you can infer from the article is that at some stage, not the current stage, yields were 50%. You cannot determine by how much they have improved. You cannot determine how this compares to others.

Yer those foldings were a work of art, i used to look so forward to them, i think i was like 10 or something i begged my Father at the time to buy my a subscription to Mad mag, he bought me a 6 month one, it used to arrive in the post all rolled up. The first thing i used to do was check out the fold in, damn those were the good old days.

As for the game, i sadly never got to play it, lol but looks super fun.

Mad magazine was my penthouse or playboy of the times. :messenger_grinning:

MS has barely anything, and won't for years.. and I've consistently brought up that it's concerning they haven't even shown 3rd parties running on their hardware.

Have you ever researched the basic chip binning process? Clocks definitely play a roll.

Take Intels processors as an example, a small percentage of the best chips can hit clocks high-enough to be packaged as K series parts (with other limits like heat spread and power draw figured in). Let's say you commissioned a chip for a custom product on this same process and your design required k series clock speeds, you now have much lower yields than Intel because they can bin down and you have no room to do that with your custom chip. There is always that point where you could push clocks to an extreme degree and get 10 chips to a wafer that worked. No one would design a chip like that, but that doesn't equate to clock speed having no role.

Obviously all types of defectives play into the binning as well. Intel doesn't manufacture 20 different chips from the same fabrication process for nothing.
