Next-gen Racing Graphics Face-off | (Next-gen means current-gen)

“Baked ray tracing” makes no sense.
The baked precalculated lighting is done using ray tracing.

Polyphony Digital Reveals GT Sport’s “Iris” Ray Tracing System at CEDEC 2018

Polyphony Digital built Iris entirely in-house and it was used for the first time in Gran Turismo Sport. Iris uses a “baking” method which pre-renders lighting in the environment. This generates realistic light and shadows, but it is almost certainly the reason we don’t have dynamic time-of-day or dynamic weather conditions in Sport. -gtplanet

Stop with this. GT doesn't have realistic physics because it isn't simulating much. And isn't in the sim market. Just like Forza isn't a sim.

GT Sport is sim. Period. Either you didn't try it on wheel or you don't know what you are talking about.

Forza is simcade.

And why do you always keep telling about a less powerful console. Isn't this the next gen graphics thread? Why does it matter how powerful the console is? If that is the case then why not take games from the megadrive and such?

Maybe is not a pure sim like assetto corsa, but compared to FH4 where the physics is pure fantasy with super cars that go through forests and other absurdities , GTS looks like an ultra realistic simulation

Show the screen shot there in the UI display. Scapes and fraud photo mode is conventional means of GTS

That's not scape mode, is photomode on track.... If you weren't so busy on searching bugs and cherry picking images of GTS you should know that

Slightly off topic but anyone else think 'TheLastWord' is just a joke account, kind of a living meme?. It would explain how he hasn't been banned yet for his constant fanboy trolling, he certainly wouldnt of lasted 2 hours under the old Neogaf lol.

Yep, whoever is running it has dedication, those walls of text no one reads, must be time consuming.

Doesn't mean if something is open world, it's graphically better. That's dumb logic. Well, it happens every time when some "exclusive" game for Xbone will be released, Xbone fans scream out loud that game is graphically best ever. They are irrelevant.

Horizon is using the same engine as Motorsport with the grip turned up. Everything simulated in Motorsport is simulated in Horizon, making Horizon the most suitable game for the term "simcade" out of anything.

Nobody said that open world games are automatically better looking. It just happens that Horizon 4 is open world and better looking.

Forza fans have already forgotten about the wretched FM7, and praise the FH4.
This is in-game I'm thinking? The way we play? Curiously, there are some Forza 7 shots, even with one car on screen that had the same quality as this screen here.

You're comparing zoomed in background track details in GT (where you don't race) to regular in-game track racing shots with cars in Forza Horizon 4 (where you actually race).......Are these the tactics you must employ to prove the graphical competence of your chosen racer? It's very unbecoming, but that's saying alot about your claims too, if this is what you must do....

I played the Forza Horizon 4 demo today and it was really great.
But what I really didn't like was the rims of the tires it was so obvious that they change at a certain speed. And it breaks the immersion.
And the lighting is still not as good as the best like GT.
I posted a gif showing the same thing happening in Forza 7 somewhere in this thread. It will be interesting to see the graphical compromises in the 60fps mode on XBONEX vs the 4k one though.....Some have already highlighted lots of missing details in the 60fps mode (elsewhere). It will also be interesting to see a comparison of FH4 at Ultra/Extreme on PC vs the 30fps mode on XBONEX so we can see at what settings it does it's best graphics vs PC.

One thing's for sure, Vega is tearing this one out, performance on RX Vega is excellent in this game and on Ryzen as well, typical for Forza titles, which is great....I say bring over our DX12 and Vulkan overlords.....So much performance has been taxed over the years due to the heavy overhead of DX11, especially on AMD hardware. Finally more titles are breaking this chain and next gen we will be fullfledged into the DX12 and Vulkan train. Even the new tombraider is getting about 45fps on Ryzen in DX11, whilst getting 60fps+ in DX12.......It's not even funny...

There was intent to port SCUD over to Dreamcast from the arcade, but that never happened. Still the last Sega GT I played was not an arcade racer like this one, but rather, Sega GT 2002 on OG XBOX. Played lots of that and also Project Gotham Racing 1 on there as well, they were both 60fps too......OG XBOX was the business, I tell you...

The baked precalculated lighting is done using ray tracing.

Ray tracing involves tracing light from the viewport to objects in the environment and reflections back to the light source. Baked lighting involves no viewport.

Most games bake their lighting using similar methods. They can call it what they want, I guess.

I don't think anyone is arguing that FH4 doesn't look great. It's absolutely stunning. However it can't realistically be compared to F7 or GTS as the focus for each game is different. FH4 is focusing on realistic environments/cars at 30hz and 4k (or 1080p if you want 60hz). They can focus the horsepower on those aspects rather than needing to worry about rendering 24+ high poly cars (max car count is 12 in Horizon).

F7 and GTS on the other hand are aiming towards as close to 4k 60 as possible while also having to push a huge number of cars on screen at once. Concessions need to be made elsewhere like reduced detail for inconsequential models and trackside assets.

GT: Sports looks hideous here, it's like PP spent all their polygon budget on the cars lol.

I like a game which looks fantastic on all fronts like FH4, not in carefully picked screenshots and replays like GT: Sport. I was wondering do they still port PS2 quality cars like the PS3 games did?

Of course they did it's a driving game, GTS is basically car porn. Would you honestly expect them to sacrifice car quality to make a tree look better?

Thankfully that ended with GT6. They have done complete rescans of some PS2 models though.

You realize this is an open world game and the rendering mechanics are different, you can go anywhere in FH4, but distant detail is really not fully drawn in till you get close or till you traverse....Zooming in on details way behind a track "on a track racer" is purposefully looking for graphcial inconsistencies because you don't race or are not suppose to see those details during normal gameplay......This is opposed to Horizon, where you can go anywhere, but where lod plays a bigger role based on proximity.....

Perhaps we should stick to track vs track racer, open world vs open world racer in this debate??? Like for Like? Comparisons....?

This is hilarious. Dude, you are the king of posting pics of "purposefully looking for graphcial inconsistencies because you don't race or are not suppose to see those details during normal gameplay." And your last paragraph...finally can't put anything in GTS above Forza so now it must be ignored. Lol. Just brilliant!

So you're trying to imply that you don't understand that Hage Kamo posting pics that exhibits nothing on track of GTS, zooming way into the back of tracks is how GTS is supposed to be compared? Even the back of background buildings, nothing you will see whilst you race on track. This is not shifting any goalpost because even in the open world where you can go anywhere in FH4, there are still many signs of low rez textures, or more-so the lod issues which I spoke of, but if all FH4 fans want to do is post the non racing screens of GTS and compare against racing scenarios with car in FH4, then their arguments is already dissolved because it's frankly self-defeating...

Please. You haven’t played Forza Horizon 4. Or, if you really have, please take some screen shots of these low resolution textures. We will wait.

AKbizzy posted some earlier.....or are Hage Kamo pics the only low rez texture shots you ascribe to? At least Ak's shots were gameplay framed shots with cars and all..

By the gods, I still don’t see any low rez textures.

Since you say there are “many signs of low Rez textures”, you should post your own shots. Many signs of low Rez textures should mean that there are many to see and find, so you should have no problem finding them in your own copy of the Forza Horizon 4 demo.

Actually, I’m not even sure what “signs” a low Rez texture leaves. But apparently there are many of them.

All this is, is a long winded way of calling someone stupid. Not impressed with your goal post moving and constant shilling.

Gotta say I am very, very, very impressed with FH4 at night time. Every little thing casts a shadow from the headlights. When you smash through a wall and each little block casts its own shadow its really a sight to see.

I can say with confidence this is the most detailed, best looking racing game ive ever seen.

The lighting, reflections, environments, materials, skyboxes. Everything comes together so well its a joy. Theyve even improved the streaming so that any pop in is so minimal that its practically not noticable compared to 3. (Im on PC btw 4k30 everything maxed out +4xmsaa)

I cant post gifs of the shadows but if someone can race at night and make a gif it would be appreciated!!

lighting involves no viewport.
For a fixed camera, the lighting of the background can be baked, it can be baked with ray tracing, when a prerendered movie uses ray tracing the fact it is not realtime does not mean it is not ray traced. With regards to a fixed camera background, the result will be indistinguishable from a real time implementation of arbitrary fidelity.

It can be done with dynamic cameras, through 360 videos or VR videos like riven, there may be other more modern techniques allowing for use in games.

Many games have said they have used precalculated global illumination. Using ray tracing would only mean more precise faking of global illumination.

Are those track assets created specificaly for ps4? or are they ports from ps3 similar to the ps2 car ports in prior games only recycling old track assets instead of cars.

There are probably higher quality tracks with better assets, haven't played the game yet, but would surprise me if that's the best it had to offer.

This was the old comparison between F7 and GTS showing it doesnt always look that abysmal

So long as Polyphony Digital refuses to fix folks losing their cars in the garage for no reason, GTS is garbage to me despite "nice graphics". It's more outrageous PD has no official support other than the clueless PS Support.

Here's another recent victim:

I visit this thread for the shots and honestly getting tired of reading these personal attacks on tlw, im talking in general not any person in particular, are you guys that insecure over what he writes that you feel the need to attack his persona to feel better?

You are behaving like those prudes on that trashy site who can't take dissenting opinions/views
If what tlw writes bothers you so much, just block him and be done with it sheesh.

Hi guys! Some questions about ACC:

-I have a 980ti and intend to play at 1080, would you say the performance is similar to AC?
- would you recommend it to someone who just runs AC for some laps from time to time?
- what about VR?

Thanks!

BTW this GTS vs FH4 war is so childish.

Anyone already playing the EA version of AC:Competizione? How does it stack up to the regular game?

The physics are a step up from AC. You can really lean on the tires and it feels like there is more flex and just more going on physics wise. It feels really good. The graphics are a step up as well but where they really have improved from AC is the sound department. There's so many more sounds than there were in AC and all of the sounds are much better. The only downside so far is the FFB has some major issues on Logitech and Thrustmaster wheels but the FFB is placeholder so that should be worked out and Kunos is aware of the issues. The content is also not there yet because it's early access. There will only be GT3 cars as well in the final game. This is not AC 2. This is a very detailed officially licensed race series so make sure you're okay with that.

VR support will be added in the next early access update. I believe it's Oct 10th. It runs well but not quite as well as AC on my GTX 1080. I would recommend getting it now as it's half the price in early access than if you wait till the full release. Just know if you get it now it is not optimized and far from being ready. There is only one car and one track right now. The full game will contain the entire GT Blancpain series though. Again just understand this is not meant to be AC 2 but is probably building the foundation for AC 2 in the future.
