So has the game just not begun being programmed yet, or has the production literally not started at all- no concept art, gameplay concepts, etc?

i wonder what captain falcons final smash will be now.
or will the old characters keep the same ones. hmmmmmmm
I do expect FE14 to be out by the time Smash 4 is released, however, I think any new characters that debut in it, won't have any bearing on the roster due it having been finalized in 2012.
A good example would be Brawl's development. At the beginning of Brawl's development (October 2005), Sakurai originally had "Fire Emblem newcomer" as a placeholder because he did not know what new Fire Emblem character to put into Brawl (not counting FE6, there were three new Fire Emblems released since Melee at the time of Sakurai beginning development on Brawl). Sakurai then went to Intelligent Systems for their opinion on who to add as the newcomer for Brawl. Keep in mind that at this time Intelligent Systems was deep in development for Radiant Dawn (FE10) and could have easily shown Sakurai a design of Micaiah since she would be the latest lord at the time of Brawl's release. Instead Intelligent Systems suggested Ike to Sakurai. The rest was history.
You realize that Sheik IS Zelda correct? Impa by no means was the "Sheik" of the game. She was Impa, same old Impa. Sheik was absent in TP as well, and was still present in Brawl (Spare me with the design nonsense). Relevance isn't an issue.
Also, Banjo-Kazooie is unrealistic, but I'm not making it worse by saying they should replace Jigglypuff or something.
Ike isn't really a super great example, seeing as he was a main character in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. He therefore had twice as many opportunities to get recognized as Micaiah, so he would have been the more obvious choice either way. Besides, Int-Sys has shown Sakurai an upcoming character during Smash development before: Roy. I'm aware he's kind of an extreme example seeing as he's a hastily designed clone, but regardless, I don't really think it's a great idea to automatically count out an in-development character.

I'd love to see all the Melee cuts return too. And items
PokéKong;35291255 said:Assume for a moment that SSB4 will have an absolutely massive roster. Would anybody be opposed to have all three Mewtwo, Lucario, AND Zoroark?
I am assuming Zoroark would be 100% unique in his fighting style, given that he differs from the other two in every aspect besides resembling an anthropomorphic animal. Anyone thinking Zoroark would be anything remotely close to a clone can't know much about Pokemon.
I've never played Dragon Quest, but isn't it just a regular, standard enemy? Like Goomba.Same reason Pikachu's playable. He's the mascot of a pretty popular franchise.
Also I'm remembering way too many more good choices, I don't think 12 was a big enough number.

So no one has anything to say about my write-up for female Nintendo characters at the top of this page.
I don't care for Dixie Kong and I feel K Rool should get what I think should be the the last spot for DK. But ehh, I'm sure Sakurai would give her an original move-set seeing as he could have likely made her a clone with no problem had he wanted to (And I think she's in the forbidden 7 IIRC) so w/e, great ... nice "case" for her. Doesn't mean she's the only worthy female.Dixie Kong was one of the protagonists in two out of three games to the DKC trilogy (which pretty much were the among the highest selling games for the Super Nintendo, as well as among the highest acclaimed). She was also one of the main two playable characters in Donkey Kong Land 2 and Donkey Kong Land 3. She also appeared as a playable character in Diddy Kong Racing DS, Donkey Konga 2, Donkey Konga 3, DK: King of Swing, and Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber. She even managed to become a playable character in several of the Mario spinoffs (Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Mario Super Sluggers).
Actually, no.Captain Syrup: Was the antagonist of Wario Land and Wario Land 2. However, in both of these games she was unable to fight without the help of a genie (Wario Land) and giant machine (Wario Land 2). Basically disappeared from the series altogether for a decade, until she reappeared in Wario Land Shake It.... as a shopkeeper.
You heard it here first people, no character can use a weapon that's similar to another character's weapon ... and apparently it's all but confirmed that Takamaru and Samurai Goroh are in SSB4.Female WarioWare characters (Mona, Ashley, Kat & Ana): Kat & Ana actually do have combat potential, but they are vastly overshadowed by the likes of Takamaru and Samurai Goroh for a possible katana user.
Impa: Has a long history with the Zelda series, but in her most of her appearances she is either an elderly lady or morbidly obese. She was a lithe, physically fit young woman in Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword though. People who suggest her in say that she should replace Sheik. The big problem with this is that the Smash Bros. fanbase is VEHEMENTLY AGAINST this idea, and Sakurai himself tends to be conservative and traditional.
]Rosalina: Was a major character in Super Mario Galaxy. However, she was basically relegated to cameo status in Super Mario Galaxy 2. She appeared as a playable racer in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7, however, Toad, Waluigi, and Daisy have a far more extensive history in the spinoffs than she does. Does not help that she was never shown to have a fighting nature in the Super Mario Galaxy games (instead shown to be motherly).
After a certain number of series I don't think Sakurai cares about how big a series is.When Kid Icarus Uprising comes out, I will give my two-cents on Palutena and Medusa. However, as it currently stands, Dixie Kong by far has the strongest resume of any female character that is not yet in Smash Bros. Her only existing problem is competing with K. Rool, but even then, why can't Sakurai just allow for two DK newcomers especially considering the Donkey Kong series is the biggest Nintendo series outside of Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda.
I think Snake proves how a character's image can be worked around. There's tons of army shit outside of guns that she can use.I was actually think of that as a possibility lol. She looks like a character that would "fit" as a Snake clone but dem odds man. AGain she looks like she would be a good character.
There was a hand-written list that supposedly mentioned all the newcomers in "Smash Universe".
That'd be really appreciated, Snakey. I know you probably don't mean to do this but between you and Black-Wind I feel kind of attacked for every opinion I have in this thread, and it's why I haven't posted in a couple days..
Yeah, this is smash ... Link being Tooned up didn't stop them from making him a clone so nothings out of the question.I doubt very many people would have pegged Ganondorf as a Falcon clone before Melee...
Sorry if I made you feel that way, I certainly don't recall having a heated convo with you.
Personally I think that the Smash fanbase is so incestual at this point that these discussions get far clogged up and never go anywhere. And by "incestual" I mean SOME people seem to only want to allow speculation based on what they think Sakurai wants/ thinks people wants. So it's basically everyone discussing ... what this one man may or may not want to put into a "game for Nintendo fans" instead of talking about what they may actually want. That's how these things ALWAYS ended up in the Brawl madness so I just try to keep things from going there ... sorry if I jumped on you
Also, it seemed you got seriously agitated when I suggested that Takamaru and Samurai Goroh are more likely than Kat & Ana. Why do things that most of the Smash Bros. fanbase thinks irks you so much? Can you at least acknowledge that far more people desire both of those characters than Kat & Ana.
Far fewer people know who Takamaru and Goroh are compared to Kat & Ana. One of those is a game that never even had a franchise spawn from it, another has laid dormant for eight years now. WarioWare is an ongoing series that the random onlooker will recognize. The Smash Bros. fanbase is far larger than the slice that makes itself vocal on the internet.
Kat & Ana are more well known, however, put all three characters into a poll on any Smash Bros. message board on any site, and Kat & Ana will always come in last.
Sure, but it's not like anyone is going to a Smash Bros. related forum for character suggestions.

Has someone posted the idea that Nintendo/Sakurai may think opening the whole character-stage-music creation to all their prefered third parties?
Like in, Capcom putting Megaman as a not free DLC, Konami selling Snake, Nintendo providing free clones à la Dr.Mario or paid clones à la Mewtwo, etc...
The thing only needs to be balanced and integrated by a small team after the game's release, and could be an extension of the work started on Brawl with the implementation of Snake and Sonic. This could be a new step Nintendo of working with third parties for the greater good, opening to them the paid DLC of one of their most popular franchise.
Seriously, the more I'm thinking of it, the more I can see it happen. Maybe this is philosophically too early for Nintendo on 3DS and Wii U, but still, nothing impossible.

Would it happens, Nope. I wish it would happens tho.
I think this will be Sakurai's decision in the general design of the game.
Does he want to go toward the DLC, socializing, and such ideas, that probably are still very new inside Nintendo, or on the contrary, does he want to achieve a kind of old-shool game, just focusing on HD graphics, competitive online in the traditionnal fighting games way (and fan-service reduced to a more polished roster compared to brawl).
The later is indeed more likely to happen, especially because of the two versions (Wii U/3DS) of the game and the number of gameplay ideas this will bring alone.
But since Iwata will support and follow him whenever Sakurai's do, pushing Nintendo in new ways could be much more innovative in a sense.
- Sakurai started thinking about what hed do with the next Smash Bros. while making Kid Icarus
- Sakurai believed it would be wrong to make a simple extension of Melee and Brawl
- He also believed that he couldnt just increase the volume by adding characters, stages, and improving the visuals
- Sakurai felt that making Smash Bros. for the console just to have improved performance would be wrong
