Nexus 6P | OT | Its also the best Android Phone

I can't stand the OS of this phone. Everything is wrong and messed up. First of all, when I have missed phone calls or messages, it doesn't have the number show up on the app like it did on my S3. Second, I had to download an app to get a basic ass feature like notification lights (seriously wtf?) and I can't get it to work with Outlook (which completely shit the bed recently, btw). Third, I can't reorder my apps. It's forced into alphabetical order which is the dumbest thing ever. Even if I get used to it, downloading an app that starts with A will mess everything up. Finally, having the back button on the left side makes no sense, especially when the phone is so damn huge. I looked this one up and I would have to root my phone and maintain it through updates. Screw that. I can't wait for Samsung to come to their senses and make a non-shitty phone that doesn't have a lazy OS.

Nova Launcher would be a good launcher for you to check out. I've used it on my last two phones (Note 2, Note 4) and I really enjoy it. It gives you the missed call/notifications/email tags on apps and gives you a bunch of customization options for app layouts and stuff.

Yeah, the keyboard spacing and the placement of the back button threw me off a while. I still didn't get a new app for notification lights. The first one I tried didn't seem to work. Seems like a standard feature to have. I miss having a menu button as well. A dedicated one at least. There doesn't seem to be an option to restart that I have noticed. Liked being able to restart after holding the power button.
Yeah, it's very clear that the same fools that are constantly making YouTube worse are the same ones that designed the OS. It frustrates me so much. It's like they don't even use their own products.

I use Nova Launcher and it doesn't do much for me. It just makes the home screen slightly more tolerable (e.g. I can have my own background now). Unfortunately, it doesn't let me reorder my apps. I have the free version though. Maybe the paid version has what I need.
Back button's been there on android foreverrrrrrr

It was on the right side these past 3 years for me. I guess Google has always been this stupid and I'm just late to the party.

tbh I never thought I'd see someone so salty about the back button being on the proper side
back button being on the left only makes sense, that's where it is on your browser too

The back button being on the left on stock android have been like this since it was a thing. Only a few OEM keep it on the right like Samsung. You should have done a little more research before getting the nexus 6P. It's an amazing phone, but depending from you came from, you will be frustrated by the lack of the features from your old phone.

It might seem weird to you guys but I have been using the S3 since 2012. It's my first cell phone so I got really used to it. Having back buttons on the left generally makes sense but with phones, I think it's better on the right - that way, I can use my phone with one hand more easily. Ideally, it should be an option for left handed people and handicaps.

It's not like I regret my purchase, even though it sounds that way from my tone. I love my Nexus and am glad that I bought it. I did lots of research and concluded that it was the best phone available. I solved some of my OS issues (like notifications) and just gave up on others (like the back button). Now I can enjoy my beautiful OLED screen and speedy updates.

Still, I hope Samsung gets their head out of their ass so I can come home.

Are you guys talking about the pulsing notification light on the top right corner of the phone? If so, you can just go to the settings menu to activate it. Under notifications settings

Looking for a new phone to replace my Galaxy S4. From the looks of reviews and other sites with info, this phone seems to be a good option. My main needs are decent battery life, decent specs, good build quality, and not a super high cost. Am I right in thinking this is the best Android phone available that fits these needs?

The Moto X Style would also fit that description, though it won't receive updates as quickly or for as long.

You really can't go wrong with the 6p.

Seems that phone isn't in Canada, and is instead replaced by the Moto X Play. It seems the Moto X Play has a better battery, but everything else is worse. I think I will go to the store and see how the Nexus 6P feels. I am definitely leaning towards it.

Oh man, have you ever been brainwashed by Samsung and their awful, awful design decisions. I understand that things feel a bit uncomfortable to you after years of being trapped in TouchWiz hell, but welcome to a much better experience. You'll get used to it, and then you'll feel disgusted even looking at a Samsung.

"Lazy OS", lol...

(I'm not saying TouchWiz doesn't have a few neat features stock Android doesn't, but overall I shiver at the mere thought of it, as well as the incorrectly placed back button (for us here in the west, at least), the deprecated menu button they left on there for way too long, etc.)

Why isn't the back button in the center? Frankly, I don't understand how a left arrow would be on the left.

Also, lol at menu button desire.

It is a lazy OS and I explained why. What makes you think that it isn't lazy?

And do you really think that the back button is more comfortable on the left side? Are you left handed? This isn't even about east/west, it's about practicality and ergonomics. Having the most used button in an easy to reach spot makes sense to me.

As for the menu button, I'm surprised to see someone making fun of it. I thought it was universally agreed that menu button > whatever that thing on the Nexus is called. I find myself using menu much more than that thing. Holding the physical button on the S3 provided the same service the rare times that I did need it so it's unfortunate that it has a dedicated button on the Nexus 6P.

Different strokes for different people. You might call the OS lazy. I call it clean. Design standards are there for a reason and if Samsung adhered to them then you wouldn't be used to having the back button on the wrong side. The menu button has been replaced by the multitask button for ages now because the menu button should now be part of the UI. I refuse to even consider buying a Samsung phone until they update their button layout. I probably use the multitask button far more often than the back button so it makes sense to have to closest to my thumb.
You should really stay away from iPhones, though. Their back button is as far away from the bottom right corner as it can be. :p

The Style and Play are different phones...

Look for Moto X Pure as that is the American version of the Style.

The back-button on the left is hard(er) to reach? Never heard that from switchers IRL and myself (coming from a S2 to the Galaxy Nexus). I don't want it on the right after a couple of weeks with a Note 4 and a chinese copy of the S4 :)

Were you planning on getting the gold? That's the only one not available in 128GB.
I wasn't, no.

But for whatever reason I assumed that the capacity was independent of the color so equated the lack of 128 on the gold as no 128 option at all.

Maybe the gold shouldn't be the default color when you go to the shop. Maybe I was being obtuse.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited to finally have a unit shipping to me.

As a leftie, I always wondered why Samsung deviated from stock (and almost every other OEM out there?) and put the back button on the right side. Now I understand the woes of righties new to stock :p

So didn't know the 6P required a Nano Sim (since the N5 used a micro sim, I assumed the 6P would be the same)

Ordered a new one from Giffgaff, should hopefully be here by the end of the week.

In the mean time, setting up my phone and stuff. (also as a side note, my N5s sim tray won't go back in now. :/ no matter how hard I push it (and it is the right way in, so it should go in) :/)

6P is quite a nice looking device though.

Samsung had it on the right years before the left side was 'stock' and it is just in a better position on that side.

I don't even know if they still make phones that use Micro sims barring dual sim phones.

Should I swap from T-Mobile to ProjectFi? Does ProjectFi have Wifi calling like T-Mobile?

Also, any pros and cons of the two would be super helpful. ^_^

It does. Project Fi works on Sprint and T-Mobile networks. It switches depending on which signal is strongest. If there is no cell signal present, it will use Wifi for calls.

Do you know how much data you use a month? Fi isn't really for someone who racks up gigs and gigs worth of data usage per month. I'm on the low end, was roughly averaging 2GBs a month so it made sense for me to switch. I only pay $40/month through Fi.

Like, tycoonheart said, it does have wifi calling and switching might depend on how much non-wifi data you use. I signed up to use 2 gigs for $20 and wound up using quite little so this billing cycle I got a reduction of ~$17 worth of data that I didnt use

That's the part that interests me the most. I use less than 2GB of data most of the time, with a few exceptions if I'm away from wifi. It'd be nice to have that carry over.

It depends on what you want in an OS. What I (and I'm sure the majority) prefer is something minimal, quick, and clean. Something that takes a bare bones approach and just gives you the essentials. I don't need or want features x,y, and z. If I want those I'll download an app...

Just so there is no mix up, there is no carry over of data. You get the same amount of GB a month that you signed up for. Unused data is lost each billing cycle. The cost of the data you didn't use is used to lower your bill. So my bill this month will be $17 less because I used so little data. But I still have 2GB this month anyways because the unused portion last month doesn't come along.

I also usually use less than 2 each month but I wanted some leeway and went for 2GB. I'll probably be getting a lot of money deducted from bills over time which is good since I am also paying off my phone monthly with Google since I didn't want to buy it flat out.

Received my 6P today from Amazon and of course there is a fucking problem with it. The screen has a very noticeable yellow tint to it. I thought that shit was only happening with Nintendo and Sony handhelds with their low quality screens. Gonna have to call Google tomorrow to see what they want me to do.

Just send it back to Amazon for a replacement. If you say it's defective when requesting a return they'll let you exchange it.

I gotcha. That works. I think I'm gonna swap over sometime this weekend. ^_^

What was that app that let you control the notification LED?

Cool. :) I think Fi might still require an invite. Did you apply for one so you can switch over?

Light Manager and Light Flow Lite are some LED managers.

Somewhere in the stock settings of the phone you have to turn on the standard LED that is used for notifications (at least if you are not using an app)

Heads up on Fi, that call waiting is something that you'll have to go into a certain setting to turn on.

EDIT: Acually just remembered an annoyance I have with the phone, I can't get it to make a notification beep if I get a text while on a phone call.

Is this still the best Android Phone?

I usually only pay attention to phones when it's coming up to time to upgrade and I'm 1 year away from that on my phone (Nexus 6).

However, I've just started a business and need to get a phone for that.

Completely out the loop at the moment.
What's good?

I think it is. I ended up deciding on the 6P. Samsung is out of the game because they went all iPhone on us so I was left with Sony or Google. Sony was waterproof but Google was cheaper and had faster updates. Google also has a fingerprint sensor (which is not just a gimmick, btw, I use it as a password and it's great). The OS took some getting used to for me but since you already have a Google, you are probably familiar with their stupid ways.

One thing to note, the Nexus 6P does not come with earphones. I was a little disappointed when I opened the box.
