Nexus 7 |OT| Google's $199 7-inch tablet by Asus

The way ASUS described the whole Nexus 7 process with Googs and the non exact release date leads me to believe that Google/ASUS really didn't think about making a tablet until early this year and have rushed it to market, hence why no firm release date.

I think if they had another month, they would have been able to do the whole "it's available tomorrow" thing and that would have been cool. I feel like they are producing as many as possible in as short amount of time to ensure most pre-orders are released but I wouldn't be surprised if the neglected markets (AUSTRALIA!!!) are left waiting for a week or two after the US gets it.

Is Staples an Asian company or something? This sentence structure is not typical of the English language:

This item is currently sold out please check back between 7/14 and 7/18 as additional units may become!

If it makes any of you guys feel better, my ebuyer N7 is still sat some where in Leeds, hundreds of miles from where I live and I'll likely not have it till Tuesday! :P

So google demanded that Adorama halt sales. Obviously so they can get playstore orders out one would assume. Adorama is selling them again on Sunday. So I'm guessing they'll ship from the playstore tomorrow and arrive monday.

Or something. Or retailers are waiting until exactly mid july which is the 15th. I don't know.

This has been a disaster of a launch. With poorly-informed customer service, vague shipping dates that seem to be constantly changing, an inability to cancel A WEEK AND A HALF BEFORE SHIPPING, units shipped and just sitting there in stores... Google has a lot to learn.

God help 'em if there's a big hardware fault on the first batch of these.

So people who ordered yesterday from eBuyer, and with free shipping, are getting theirs today. Meanwhile I still have no idea what's going on with Google.

Well, Google have lost any future business from me with regards to buying hardware.

more evidence of release date being between now and then. I just don't get get what happened. So retailers all got their shipments in and were all going to sell on july 12th, then google tells them not to until [insert date here]. What I'm curious about is why were they all ready to go but google themselves not ready on their own store. It's weird.

Hope they explain it when the mess is over.

Ebuyer shipped it with Express AM as well, which means it should be coming before 12pm. I suppose the first giveaway that Google had no idea what they were doing should have been when they were charging £10 for two-day shipping.

Edit: Mine from Ebuyer just arrived!

That 20 minutes on the phone to Google switching my order was worth it. :-)

Hopefully us Australians who ordered through Google don't have to wait another week or so. All online retailers I've checked have a release date of 27 or 28.

Mine was also just delivered by Ebuyer. First impressions are very good. Love the form factor, screen is lovely, Jelly Bean is very smooth and responsive. Unfortunately I'm at work so can't have a proper play until lunch, grrr.

google embargoes other retailers so play store pre-orders arrive first

other retailer's pre-orders arrive first anyway

Sigh FUCK YOU google

I actually went to the adorama store yesterday via subway and hey flat out told me Google told them to stop sales

People want to buy your shit you let them its fuckng simple

Learn from apple stealoogle

So I emailed google yesterday to cancel my order.
Then this arrives at my door this morning.

:D

EDIT: from ebuyer, not google play

Wait! Im an idiot. :(

This is from ebuyer.

I tried to cancel my order from google & ordered off ebuyer instead - but as you may have noticed from my complaints yesterday ebuyer didnt allow next day shipping for me, only 3-5 days.

So when it arrived this morning I assumed it couldnt have been ebuyer.

So this isnt from google play :P

Sorry for giving false hope :(

To be fair it doesnt actually say on the box who its from & theres no invoice

Darn. Oh well, enjoy it, you lucky lucky soul.

Yep! Didnt get an email or anything from them telling me it had shipped.

'Dispatch date was 16/07/12' according the parcel.

It from the future!
Haha, they must have boxed them up ready for dispatch on the 16th, but accidently gave them to the courier, Parcelforce I guess? anyway. :lol

I don't seem to have the £15 google play credit or free copy of Transformers (no real loss) on my Nexus 7. Anyone know how I can claim it?

hmm. my credit card hasn't been charged yet, so it's likely not to be delivered today. looks like i'm headed into the office after all :(

As soon as i logged into my device, i got an email telling me £15 was added to my google play balance.

and Transformers was already on my home screen when i logged in (under my library)

Google have ClusterF'd this so much, all they had to do was give a firm date, it could of been the 1st of August but it would of saved all this shit.

I got an email welcoming me to the Nexus 7, no mention of £15 free credit although it does say I get a free copy of Transformers. doesn't say how to access it though. Think i may have to contact Google.

Edit: I did have free copies of treasure Island, The There Musketeers and Alice in Wonderland pre-installed.

Three public domain books, score!

US is supposed to get a Bourne book, UK gets a Jeffrey Archer book. Not heard anything about those other books though.

ewww.

Nothing is ever simple with Google it would seem.

they don't know how to channel hardware. The reason I think stores are getting them faster because Asus are used to supply them with their products. Asus makes them, sends to google, who bottled up the distribution to customers.

I got the Play Store credit email almost immediately after activating it.

First impressions:

+ Love the form factor. I can see this getting a lot more use than either my Touchpad or previous Transformer. It's just easier to hold and use and take around with you and the screen size is enough for my purposes.
+ Yet it is still a significant upgrade over the Galaxy Nexus in terms of screen size. I was worried that it wouldn't be but web pages and apps feel a lot more 'roomy' on the N7 which is exactly what I wanted.
+ Some of the more well-designed apps for the phone-interface scale very well to the 7-inch form.
+ Interface is very smooth and fast.
+ Love the rubbery back - very practical. The build is solid (a lot more solid than the TF101).
+ Jelly Bean is great. Very fast and fluid. Feels exactly like it does on the Galaxy Nexus so it's nice to have some consistency.

- PPI seems a little on the low side, text isn't as sharp as I had hoped. It has a good resolution for a tablet that sized, I guess I just had unrealistic expectations with how sharp things were going to look.
- USB cable is way too short.
- Comes with Transformers. KILL IT WITH FIRE.
- Google Play Store content in the UK is abysmal. No magazines, and TV/movie selection is poor. I knew this though and thankfully there are other services like Amazon/Lovefilm and Netflix (although I haven't had a chance to try these apps).

I got 2 emails, one welcoming me to nexus 7 then another about the free £15. Transformers was already in play movies.

For books I got the nexus 7 guidebook & "only time will tell"

I'm wondering if my problem is that I have a Nexus 7 preorder with Google that is currently being cancelled. I rang up and they are escalating my query to a specialist. They seemed a bit confused as to how I already had my Nexus :)

That's the first thing I noticed also. I'm not saying its bad, but coming from a galaxy nexus it seems like quite a step down.
