NFL 2013 Week 4 IOTI - For a good time call Sweet Pea

Seattle is going 15-1 and is going to cruise to the Super Bowl.
Well, we should win all our home games and all our away games are winnable(moreso with teams going below expectations), so if we do get the top seed then yes we're going to the big dance.

But there's a lot that can happen.

I think it's funny when people talk about "awful" teams winning the SB. The playoffs are more important than the regular season, if you win your way through them you are not an awful team by default, in my book.

Flacco's playoff performance last season is more meaningful than Peyton's regular season performance. It's all about those rings.

Then lose to the Colts after their defense clutches and grabs and holds Percy Harvin all game.

The Ravens got into the playoffs on a 4th and 29 after choking worse than a girl in a Peter North porno. Yes their playoff run was impressive but I don't think something like that is repeatable. Mediocre teams may catch lightning in a bottle but I'd rather not applaud a team that dismantles itself to sign Joe Flacco to an albatross contract.

Stop drinking on the street like a degenerate and get some glasses and then you might see the truth.

I find joy in simple things.
As should you.
You know your Steelers will bounce back in a year. thats what they do. Theyll go back to being dominant and everything will go back to the way it was. Meanwhile fans of other teams will deal with struggle and losing and everything else. Why do Steelers fans ever sweat a season?

I really hope we get a 14-2 SB winner this year. I am so sick of garbage teams winning it most years.
Team isn't garbage if it wins the Super Bowl. Are they the "best" team or most "deserving" team? Maybe, maybe not.

Regular season is a means to get to the playoffs. Once you're there, it's a whole new "season" in essence.

"Medicore" in the regular season, stellar in the playoffs. Which means more to you?

Believe me, the Giants were garbage when they beat the Pats last time. Being outscored over 16 games is the definition of garbage.

Which is repeatable? The playoffs are a crapshoot right? If we agree on that then it's really hard to say the Ravens were even a good team last year. Sure they demolished the Pats, but they also barely scraped by with incredibly insanely bad defense by the Broncos to even get there.

I'm still not totally convinced of their ability to win road games yet, but if they do manage to get the top seed in the conference, you can pen them in for a SB berth.

Seahawks in CenturyLink is one of the closest things you can get to a lock in professional sports these days.

The Pats were also "garbage" in that they hadn't beat a team with a winning record that season until the playoffs (maybe one? I can't entirely remember). That ring is all that matters. Discredit it all you like but that's the end goal.

Joe Six-Pack: posting for the common man
You guys are looking at this wrong, there is tons of parity, it is just parity in that almost all the teams are really bad now. All but 4 or 5 teams are bad this year, and there really isnt one team that is totally complete. Seahawks are the closest, but their WRs are only okay and they pass less then most teams. I really think that the cap, and rising QB contracts, force teams to go cheap somewhere, and that is causing most teams to have some glaring hole.

75% of the league being mediocre or bad causes parity by default.
who cares about the losing teams? Especially when the top 25% of teams are almost always the same?

There's plenty more out there.

Since 1987 only 12 franchises have won the superbowl. And if you look at those teams all but the Ravens and Buccaneers had great QB play. The last great defense to win the superbowl would be the 2005 steelers. The 08 superbowl had better QB play by Ben with a top defense. So essentially unless you have a top 5 or top 10 QB in addition to an above average defense, you're not winning the superbowl.

So, sure, if you want to say there's "parity" among the shitty teams, technically true, who cares, none of those teams are going to make the playoffs or win the superbowl.

I also don't think we'll ever see another 2000 Ravens or 2002 Bucs team win with all the rules favoring the offense.

In other news Bill Simmons says the Texans should offer the Steelers Matt Schaub a 1 and a 3 for big ben. lol

I can't believe people are falling for the Broncos. Cherry picking a shit division on the way to an early playoff exit has defined Manning's entire career.

Our first-team pass protection was spotty in the preseason, so it being spotty against the Panthers was to be expected. It's been slowly coming together, though. We're also starting to clean up on penalties which killed many of our drives in the first two games.

I don't believe you.

Nothing more to really talk about then is there? :)

I never said they were great. Most people here agree that the playoffs are a crapshoot though, so it's not a stretch to say with that given that giving credit to shitty teams winning the Super Bowl is dumb. The win may be forever but I think it's okay to have perspective on good these teams really are.

The playoffs are rough due to single elimination but we can second guess outcomes from here to eternity if you want to argue that way. Winning the SB is the end goal, and doing that requires a minimum of three wins against some of the "best" teams in the league. If you pull that off you are not a mediocre or bad team in my book.

How in the world is Detroit favored (I realize home team gets 3 points)? This isn't a pickem game. Chicago is a much better team right now, and Detroit just lost its #2 receiver.

nonsense, Stat Padford is going to throw for 500 yards, CJ will have 200 yards receiving, and Reggie Bush will have 200 yards from scrimmage.

I'm excited for the Kyle Long vs Suh battle.

Been a long time since the Rams have looked as hopelessly terrible as they did against Dallas.

Getting ready for that 9ers blowout. Petrified.

Weeden was benched week two.

So with this in mind, any shitty team that beats "good" teams in a three game stretch is good?

I'm not second guessing outcomes, I'm judging a team by 16 games instead of 3.

As bad as it ever looked under Spags. I imagine both teams are going in to "must win" mode and that San Francisco will do it much better

Not any three games, three playoff games (or more likely four since the team is "mediocre" to you). The stakes are so much higher. That is when the "good" teams are defined, in my opinion.

Side note: have you ever noticed who talks the most about how "bad" the Ravens were last year? Pats fans and Steelers fans. Odd.

I think the 16 regular season games are much more indicative of the quality of the team. The goal for these NFL teams is repeatable success and giving themselves opportunities to win the Super Bowl in my opinion. Finishing 9-7 in a shitty AFC and winning games on the road goes completely against this.

It's much simpler than that; the goal for NFL teams is to win the Super Bowl. Passing final judgment on a team using any other metric is needlessly complicating the issue, in my opinion.

They beat them twice. With a terrible run game and leaky pass defense, obviously the Giants weren't the best all season, but the Patriots weren't either. So who gives a fuck?

Why exactly are you salty for me pointing out the obvious? I never said the Pats were a great team that year.

Nothing needlessly complex. Squeaking into the playoffs by converting 4ths and a million to go are not repeatable and not something any NFL team wants to do at the end of the season.

No one's "salty". The best team overall that year was Green Bay but they met a team who can match up with them well in the playoffs, and that was it.

Would you rather do what the Ravens did last season or go 18-0 and lose the Super Bowl? Not a tough question for me to answer, personally.

SB win is all that matters.

That isn't what I'm talking about. Obviously if I had to pick between a SB win or an undefeated regular season with a loss in the playoffs I'd pick the former. But those are not the only options. If we agree that the playoffs are essentially a crapshoot then really it comes down to giving the team the most opportunities which is regular season success. That's all I'm getting at really (and the fact I'm still bitter about both SBs, if that wasn't obvious enough).

It really hasn't, though. Being blown out in London last year, they were equally terrible. Went into SF two weeks after and put up a hell of a fight.

Watch Marvels agents of shield tonight or the manning 30 for 30 hmm

I've loved every single 30 for 30 I've watched (still need to catch up on the few I haven't seen), so that gets my vote. My next TV marathon session will be to eventually watch Breaking Bad.
