I'm not. I'm being honest. Sanders is romanticized because people like to believe he never failed.

No. They were great in his NFL, not realistic or deluded in today's NFL.

Barry was my favorite non-Packer player growing up. God should forever condemn the Detroit Lions to a future devoid of success for driving him out of football. It takes a considerably evil organization to break a man's will.

You know who's stupid fault this is? Your stupid team! If you guys would of just did your job we could of played Peyton Manning in the SB, but NOOOOO we get the big fat rapist!!!
!
We got screwed way more in the game against the Colts than than you did against us in the SB. Manning literally did nothing in the whole game. Their whole offense was super questional PI calls and Bettis either choking like a fat fucked or being paid to throw the game. Even then Ben and co. played through it and won.

I'm not complaining about the calls! I'm complaining that Big Ben is a big fat pig and a rapist!
Now this is your first reasonable post.

He probably wouldn't get that many carries.

If he was older, he would be less reliable.

The receiving numbers would be down, or shared with a fresh back.

The team would have a quarterback (even if shitty) capable of putting up professional numbers.

Maybe, but we really have no idea if that would be the case. All we have is his stats, and video of his playmaking ability that says he was one of the best RB to ever play the game.

Those were my youthful days of watching football, my high school and college days. And in those days I pretty much hated any player that wasn't a Steeler. Yeah, yeah, Montana, Marino, Elway, Lawrence Taylor, Jerry Rice, blah, blah, blah. But there was one guy from another team that I loved to watch, and that was Sanders. There simply was nobody else like him.

It's not maybe, it's how the position is treated.

We are talking about an era where Rex Ryan would have been an offensive genius for most teams.

I liked Montana and yearned for the day when we had a player who could throw a ball forwards.

I waited a long time. :(

Then explain Peterson, who right now has very similar stats to Sanders.

I compared LT, who is closer to Sanders generation, and did similar numbers. AP is just another one*.

*He beat the fuck out of his child's testicles with a twig and has 75 yards on the season. What a BEAST!

Sanders is the greatest open field runner who's ever lived. Sayers would have been there if they knew how to repair acl's back in the 60's.

He's not a martyr, I would likely quit too if I had to play for that shitty lions team year after year.

His production was ready to decline. He quit on a team which made the postseason for the first time in forever.

Only difference with LT is they gave him a elliptical machine for sideline fun.

I can certainly acknowledge how good he was now. But that's pretty much why I hated all those QBs then, simply because the Steelers hadn't had a good one since 1982.

They went 8-8 in '99, not exactly a huge improvement over the year before and then went back to being crappy after the '00 season.

Sanjury had one too many ciders.

Barry is the GOAT.

The only reason the Lions went to the playoffs is because the Packers had Ray Rhodes as coach and we lost a lot of talent on both sides of the ball.

I didn't. I'm not downplaying Barry as one of the best rushers in the game. I'm nixing this romantic notion that he stopped playing because of the man.

The LT comparison is basically the closest you have to the next guy like him. Instead of retirement, he used the exercise bike while a national audience laughed at him.

Oh ESPN.

What if your favorite NFL team is terrible -- should you stand firm?

No. It's OK to be a fair-weather fan.

The 2014 season has seen a race to the bottom among the league's bad clubs. Five teams -- City of Tampa, Jacksonville, Jersey/B, Oakland and Tennessee -- are poised to finish with no more than three wins, versus only two teams that bad last season. The Bears and Giants have been huge disappointments, while the Eagles knocked themselves out of a seemingly locked-up postseason bid with an all-time phoned-in bad game versus 4-11 Washington. Buffalo hasn't reached the postseason in a league-worst 15 years and laid an egg versus 3-12 Oakland.

If any of these are your favorite teams, just write them off until such time as they may improve. Don't watch their final outings. Don't make excuses or invent reasons they may be less of an infuriating letdown next year.

NFL teams that consistently promise to improve, then stay terrible, are manipulating you. Strike back! It's OK to be a fair-weather fan.

Fans and boosters of college football should stay true to their schools through thick or thin because colleges play a larger role in society. NFL teams are strictly entertainment organizations. If the entertainment is bad, write 'em off. You wouldn't purchase a crummy album by a pop star. Why watch the games of a terrible NFL team?

Jacksonville is on a 9-38 stretch. Washington is on a 7-24 stretch. The Raiders are on a 11-36 stretch and haven't made a playoff appearance in 12 years. Tennessee is on a 15-32 stretch and has gone 11 years without a playoff win. The Buccaneers haven't won a playoff game in 12 years. The Lions haven't won a postseason contest in 23 years. The Bengals haven't won one in 24 years.

That some NFL clubs consistently are good while others consistently are bad may be a case study in coaching and management. Regardless, if your favorite team is bad, you owe them nothing. NFL teams are heavily subsidized by the public, and exist solely to provide sports entertainment. Bad play is not entertaining. Don't feign loyalty. Take pride in being a fair-weather fan!

I'm not clear on what your argument is but you mention LT which undermines your vague point. You're the one selling the idea, make good on it or get off my porch.

This talk about Barry Sanders made me watch this:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=T6uHexiZCKA

What I don't understand is, why didn't Barry just sign with a different team if he did not get along with the Lions Front Office? He didn't seem like a guy that really gave a shit what team he played for. And virtually ANY team would have loved to have him.

Your porch seems to be nothing more than a fantasy, breh.

Let's talk about OJ! Timeless Heismann winner/actor.

Question to NFL-Gaf: I want to understand why the NFL only plays 16 regular season games - of which 6 are from within your division - therefore each team in the NFL only plays 13 of a total of 31 opponents within a season. Why does the NFL (and team owners) think this is acceptable? How can you state that a team is the best in the league when they play less than half of the other teams in the league?!

I started to really get into American football this year, and i was shocked to hear than the Pats and Packers won't ever play each other again until 2018 (unless they meet in the super bowl). This is absolutely ridiculous.

It seems to me all the statistics are meaningless if you aren't playing every team in the league.

Thoughts?

NHL a few years ago didn't have cross-conference play. MLB used to, before Bud Selig ruined it.

Regular season records mean nothing. Whole point is you advance, and play the best team in the opposing conference. That has always been the point, but deluded due to exposure.

Oh, and regular season play is useless to measure which team is the best.

American football is a grueling sport, there are players who dont get out of bed until Tues afternoon from the amount of physical wear it takes.

Demarco Murray for example drinks 24 bottles of water before a game to stay hydrated. Injuries are alread a problem and hurt the league, adding more games would water down the league even worse then it is come mid-season.
