Weinke and I are of a similar age but I was much more invested in the N64.

Super Mario 64, Both Zeldas, Goldeneye 64, Perfect Dark, Mario Tennis, Super Smash Bros. Bomberman 64, Ogre Battle 64, The four great wrestling games, F-Zero X, Mario Golf, Resident Evil 2, Wave Race 64, 1080 Snowboarding, Jet Force Gemini, Mario Party 2. Great system for people with friends.

I played the shit out of the PS1, don't get me wrong, but almost none of those were multiplayer.

N64 was worth if for Mario and Zelda alone.

Those games were years ahead of anything else.

Mario64 was an actual experience the first time you played it and Zelda showed how to make a amazing 3rd person adventure game.

Those games invented the 3D cameras that most third person games use a version of. Their influence on the industry cannot be overstated.

Mario was just a cheap knock off of Bubsy 3D though.

SMW and LTTP are superior to M64 and Ocarina. The N64 was a sick joke with a few good games here and there, and they deserved to be crushed by the Playstation.

The PS1 was a pretty overrated console imo. It was solid but PS2 was where I think Sony really hit it out the park. The PS1 BC was also a nice touch.

N64 was fucking amazing. That was back when gaming had a sense of magic to it and not everything would leak. There wasn't videos of everything online either. It was awesome. I think those were the last consoles to give off that vibe.

The only area PS1 topped N64 was third party and game storage.

N64 had less but quality it king here. You had far better local MP on N64 and it also had some of the GOAT single player adventure games.

Yup back when gaming legends and secrets were an actual mystery, before you could simply dump a game and figure out if it really exists or not. I always wonder though if that's more to do with age than anything else. That was also the last era with cheat codes being a big deal.

Part of me misses it. But I wouldn't trade my PS4. PC, or any of my other consoles back for it lol.

The only N64 game anyone ever played was Goldeneye. Everyone was pretty much a Playstation owner or they had a N64 with like three games. I think one guy I knew had one of the wrestling games but we just played Goldeneye anyway.

See it's weird because the biggest game we would all sit around and play while drinking beer back in high school was Tony Hawk. We'd switch off and try to get the highest score.

I don't remember a game being the focal point of a party again until Smash Bros. Melee came out also. After that it was probably Halo 2.

I dunno, different social groups and all that. I was the biggest gamer of the few circles I was running around in by far so it's probably my fault the other stuff didn't get as much exposure. Most kids besides me owned like...3 or 4 games and 3 of them would be single player.

In my group, it was mainly PC gamer types. Dorm-wide LAN games or LAN setups at apartments, and then a lot of online gaming in general when decent broadband was an affordable option when we moved off-campus. Playstation was for party games or sports games. N64 was for Mario Kart or wrestling games.

It was really hard getting through some of those PS1 3D games back then if you had a decent 3D card. If someone had the option to play Tomb Raider on a Voodoo or Voodoo2 at a higher resolution and framerate, noone bothered with the PS1 version.

I'll agree that Sony really hit their stride with the PS2 putting out a great piece of hardware and establishing themselves as a first party developer, but I'll still take PS1's unmatched third party library. Squaresoft's Golden Age alone makes a lot of other consoles jealous.

I don't understand where I grew up. Growing up, all anyone had was an N64, and then a Gamecube. There was one kid we knew who had a PS1. When I was young I thought the N64 and Gamecube crushed the competition and only weird kids had Playstation. It wasn't until I looked up the numbers years later and realized the Sony dominance

That's why for single player games, I was primarily a PC gamer. I used the Playstation for those JRPG type games.

Civilization 2 owned my life in like 1998? I was also big into shooters like Half Life which kinda necessitated the use of a KB/M setup. Didn't really participate in my first LAN party until like 2001....we shared a lot of porn, MP3s, pirated games, etc. Looking back it was weird how shameless we were about such things but that shit was a bit harder to access and downloads took forever. It's funny how much stuff was pirated back when and now I don't know anyone that pirates unless it's movies for a media server....Steam was the best anti-piracy weapon invented.

Even though I was mostly a PC gamer, you guys need to leave the PS1 library alone. That was an embarrassment of riches that has continued mostly unabated until today (despite peaking in the PS2 era).

I think ease of piracy was a contributing factor for how popular the PS1 was at some campuses - I knew several people who had a shit ton of burned PS1 discs.

Now that we've been here? Hell no! How old are you btw? Again I think a lot of this was just nostalgia, but yeah that magic is long gone.

Another factor was that I remember hurting to play any kind of a new game back then. It was literally either "pirate some shit" or "watch TV". I don't remember the PS1 piracy scene or really any piracy scene until....emulators on PC? I think that had to have been before CD burners were a bit more common place. We all had the HP 2x speed burner where you prayed to the gods that your burn would work.

Now even in the worst case scenario it's like "fuck another humblebundle for like $5" *grumbles and grabs wallet*

I don't think I could ever run out of games now with how cheap digital releases and indies have become.

Anyway those were different and less ethical times kids and you shouldn't pirate stuff because it hurts developers

edit: nostalgia for the N64/PS1 era is so weird to me...those games have aged so poorly. At least with the PS2/Xbox/GCN era you can tell what the fuck the 3D blocks on the screen are supposed to be!

If y'all want to argue Mario, then Super Mario Sunshine is the best Mario game. Period.

That game was an unfinished janky mess, but I still like it.

Best 3D Marios:
Mario Galaxy 2 (best 3D platformer of all time)
Mario Galaxy
Super Mario 3D World
*Super Mario Odyssey will clearly be the best game of all time, but I suppose I shouldn't list it here

Other top tier Marios:
Paper Mario
Paper Mario TYOD
Super Mario World
Mario Kart 8

Also anyone who thinks the N64>SNES is a Trump and I grew up with the N64

Outside of the US I feel like that used to be a major factor in which consoles people bought. I knew a lot of people who pirated a ton of PS1, Saturn and DC games. After college I am not sure what happened so I can't say what happened with piracy after the DC.

Also, weinke is horrible but he was right about Civ2. I loved Warcraft 2 but Civ2 stole your fucking soul it was so addictive. I had to quit the game or else I was going to fail out of college it got that bad. I also banned my friends from playing it because they would just live in my room.

I really came to hate waggle so I wasn't as big of a fan of the Mario Galaxy games. The one and only game that I felt was improved by waggle was Metroid Prime compared to the standard control counterpart.

edit: Also comparing to what else I was playing at the time, Super Mario Galaxy was pretty behind the graphics curve considering it wasn't in HD. Sunshine didn't have the same problem and was really good looking in its day just like Mario 64. The lack of HD capability with the Wii in general kinda soured me on it since you had to kinda mess with TV settings or deal with a stretched picture as opposed to playing on a 360 or PS3.

3D World was good but it didn't feel as "open" to me as Sunshine or 64.

After seeing your opinions on Sunshine and Galaxy it turns out you were not JCB material after all.

Good luck with your Trump pillow*.

I think n64 was a good console. It just looks bad in comparison to the Saturn. If it had been a different gen then Saturn it would look much better.

M64 and Sunshine were good tho.

This opinion is wrong but I really regret missing out on the Saturn.

It was the last 2D home console. I was too fascinated by 3D at the time to notice or care though.

Haters gonna hate

At least I'm not a Pats fan!

:jnc

Also at least if wienke likes the open world Mario's more he's probably pumped for Odyssey

I'm totally pumped and I'll be getting a Switch just for that game. It's just that when someone offers you an extra $150 for something that you wont really get a whole lot of use out of until the Fall, why not wait?
