Except for that pesky life sentence he's facing.

There's always the appeal.

Hypothetical here.

He was found not guilty today. Let's say he wins his appeal and is released immediately (somehow).

Does an NFL team take a chance on him? I mean we're all pretty sure that Ray Lewis killed a guy, and he went to play for another 10+ years.

He still has 4-5 years on the gun charge he was given today (1 year time served )

0% chance first off. Second off nobody who knows the case at all thinks ray Lewis killed a guy.

He could get out on appeal.
Sure, but I'm going to place odds on his appeal being denied.

Absolutely not.. big difference between what Ray did and what he did.

Only 4-5 years?

They'd probably release him early at 2 years or less even? Can't imagine they like to keep high profile guys in a prison.
They said minimum of 4 years, maximum of five in the courtroom. I think that meant he would get a chance of parole at 4 years? (Strictly on the gun charge, that is separate than his other time. Were he to get off on appeal then this would kick in)

Are minimum terms a hard and fast rule in Massachusetts?

I know it varies by state but I think parole is a weird thing with various things determining it despite what a judge says.

It's 4-5 years in prison AFTER his life sentence.

Right but we were assuming that he somehow successfully appeals that murder charge. Sounds like it's still in appeals?

Murder conviction is automatically under review now.

Today's news does help him, but I don't know if it helps him THAT much.

A Matthew Stafford extension is in the works

DETROIT -- The Detroit Lions have opened negotiations with Matthew Stafford that could make him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

But GM Bob Quinn wasn't about to say anything else about the talks, which are expected to protract well into the summer. A deal is expected, but not for months.

"It's not done yet," Quinn said Thursday night during a question-and-answer session with season-ticket holders at Ford Field. "We're in the very early stages of talking to Matthew and his representatives.

Stafford, 29, is coming off one of the best seasons of his eight-year career. He was sixth in the league in passing yards (4,327), and did it while completing 65.3 percent of his passes -- the second best season of his career -- and throwing just 10 picks. That was a career low for a full season.

He also guided eight fourth-quarter comebacks, a league record, which powered the Lions' playoff push.

Remember when Belichick skillfully drafted a murderer on the 3rd day of the draft. Only Belichick saw All-Pro ability in him. It took a man with Belichick's vision to overlook the murders.

I didn't pay that much attention to this one for obvious reasons, but it did seem this case was more circumstantial.
