If they don't run off the clock then they get another play off which means the Falcons would be punished by the refs getting the call wrong on the field.

The ref says "the play is reversed, he's down here, the clock will continue to run," he blows the whistle while doing the "run clock" windmill arm motion, and time starts counting down for Detroit to try and line up as quickly as possible and run a play.

It's actually still more harmful to the Lions since at least if Tate was called down short of the line...the whole team was already still right there around the line of scrimmage and they could have run back faster than without the stoppage.

Whaaaaat? It's not a penalty on the Lions. It's an attempt to make the clock as accurate to the situation as possible.

The situation is less accurate by just ending the game than it is by allowing the 8 seconds. I'm not gonna go marching to the league over this or anything but having the game end that way is just extremely unsatisfying for everyone involved.
