NFL Offseason Thread 2015 |OT| All of our teams suck!

So Eagles are actually interviewing actual candidates from outside the organization for their vacant "fake" GM position.

I worry about Chip being in charge of personnel (he wanted his Oregon guys 2-3 rounds before they could have been had and had to be held back by Roseman) but I will say this he has yet to surround himself with "yes men". Even his coaching staff is a mix of college coaches and former NFL Head coaches/assistants. Not just guys he knows but coaches with very different backgrounds and philosophies.

Hoping they get the former drunk or someone super star personnel guy.

A source told me Mike Shanahan could take on a GM type role in Buffalo while Kyle became the head coach

There are also reports of Mike and Kyle being pitched as a package deal (coach and OC) to the Raiders, 49ers, and Bills

I hope they go with Marynowitz.

I think the model to look at is Pete Carroll in Seattle. Carroll was there before Schneider. Schneider handles free agency and the draft, but Carroll has the final say.

Most sense for Ndamukong Suh: 1) Indy (next to Chapman in 34) 2) Jacksonville (Gus & Suh = perfect) 3) Oakland (seems like a Raider, too)-Jayson Braddock.

Don't see the Colts doing it. Jags/Raiders? Sure

I hope Chip thinks like Carroll this draft and gets some defense. We really need a new secondary unit. The Line and LB's are fine.

Oakland really would be the perfect landing spot for Suh, he's the perfect Raider.

Overpriced free agent? Check.
Dirty player? Check.
Allergy to playoff wins? Check.

Falcons are interviewing Rex Ryan tomorrow.

Could be the domino that kickstarts the coach hiring process around the league.

Next to Jelly in the middle would be a pretty good combo. Just let him 1 gap.

Still doubt it happens tho.

With the cap space you guys have you pay around 60% of his guaranteed money next season. Texans owe JJ $28 million in 2015. All downhill after that though

While the secondary is in dire need, the LB and Line aren't in much better shape.

Trent Cole will most likely be a cap casualty unless he takes a severe pay cut. Brandon Graham is a FA and turned down an extension earlier in the season cause he knows he can demand some money on the market.

Demeco Ryans is coming off of his 2nd achilles heel injury and he is going to be 32. Never fit the 3-4 although he has been amazing for us. Most likely gone. Marcus Smith can't make it onto the field and Casey Mathews is only on the team because of his family and Oregon connect with Chip.

Honestly they need BPA at any and all defensive spots (outside of DT/NT) both in the draft and FA. Can't believe they wasted a pretty decent secondary FA class last off season in favor of keeping Carry Williams and Bradley Fletcher. Class is less enticing this off season but they will almost have to pick someone up.

The Oline is also aging fast. Does G Todd Herremans even come back at this point?

So many needs plus ??? all over the QB position. Eagles need tons of starter talent infusion and depth.

Hearing Ballard is the favorite for GM in Chicago. I believe he was just with the team in 2012 though and is very familiar with Bears organization and players. Way to blow things up. This jokster will probably keep Cutler. Heard he also wants Toub as HC. I don't see it.

Ballard also denied interview with Jets. He interviews on Wednesday. Seems like a done deal.

My worry with Chip is that he has no idea how to evaluate talent at the corner and safety positions. Bradley Fletcher? Cary Williams? Patrick Chung? All Chip signings.

Giants will have more than that with some very easy cuts.

David Wilson will free up 1.3 million
Mathias Kiwanuka will free up 4.5 million
Peyton Hillis will clear up another 1 million

Reducing down JD Walton's salary if not cutting him outright will bring in another 2.5 million.

They can easily get to the 25-26 million range if they choose. Reese has said they will not be active in free agency so I expect them to use that money to resign Jason Pierre-Paul and some other key roster members. Including Prince Amukamara who got his 5th year option picked up and is due over 7 million in cap money. They can sign him long term and bring that cap figure down.

Extending Eli would also be a really easy way to free up more cap money, too.

Do you think they go into next year with JPP, Wynn, Ayers, Moore and likely a draft pick?

The old coot was right, you can never have too many pass rushers. I am definitely not excited about the above rotation at DE.

Panthers need to go ahead and lock up Kuechly long term. It's only going to cost more the longer they wait.

The assumption is that even if they sign a GM from outside Marynowitz is going to remain with the team. He is already part of the front office personnel department and as far as I know his name has only come up for a promotion within the organization. Haven't heard any mention of him leaving to another team.

Whoever or whatever the structure I hope Chip's knows better thank to just select a yes man. He didn't with his coaching staff but then I wonder why he couldn't get along with Howie. Seems like they differed a ton over the draft board.

Possibility, yeah. I think they'll look to get another low cost pass rusher in free agency and hope they find something along the lines of Ayers. I would be completely blown away if they let JPP walk. I just don't see that happening.

He's getting franchised if there's no deal.

The Eagles have requested to interview the Packers' Eliot Wolf, Ron Wolf's son.

Nice I'd prefer him, the drunk from Washington state, or the in house guy. Don't know why we are looking at the guy from Detroit who has been there for 18 years and hasn't really been part of great teams.

Sort of excited about new GM possibilities especially if the guys mentioned areally hired. They surely won't just go along with whatever Chip thinks and Chip most likely listens to them more than Howie who he sees as a glorified cap guru.

Do feel bad about Howie. He loved being the GM and the whole draft process.

From the candidates that are part of the current search, it seems clear that Chip wants someone who can actually evaluate talent and do their jobs, not just a glorified yes man.

More than Chip wanting to micro-manage, it seems like he wanted to be at the top of a clear chain of command. Which makes a lot more sense than two guys who have an ambiguous amount of control fighting it out in the draft room and then drafting Marcus Smith at the last minute.

Yeah that's why so far I'm loving all the candidates brought up.

Gives hope. Eagles haven't had a true GM since the early days of Reid. Then when Reid gained his powers it was never clear who was truly in charge.

Reid had personnel say and GM Heckert was his right hand man he chose himself to replace respected GM Tom Modrak.

Both Howie and Banner had zero football background either playing, coaching, or scouting but we're given personnel power as well. Both guys came up from accounting as contracts and cap guys.

Every hear we would be left guessing who picked who, who let player x walk, and who had the most influence.

I'd like a traditional set up even if Chip has final say. Just don't get why it got so ugly with Tom Gamble. He had to be escorted out of the building. He could easily be the GM and should still be in our FO.

Nickel defense. Ugh. Watch Heyward (#97). he properly controls scrimmage but the second Pierce cuts back the play is dead.

Steelers got killed by play action at the goal line this season but you have to play it straight. We need a cornerback in the early rounds this draft. Steelers are trying to compensate too much for the back end and it's killing them.

I think the Eagles will be way more active in FA. Howie sold himself to Lurie in part by being the one guy in the room who was opposed to all the dream team signings. He was never going to go crazy in FA. Eagles have way to many holes to fill in the draft.

Yeah. Bad call. That's actually Mitchell's gap, but he's not coming up and taking on a tackle. The real issue with that defense is that Troy is playing the strong side. That's because teams ran towards Tuitt/Worilds a whole lot more than at Heyward/Harrison. Simply shouldn't have been in nickel.

I actually think the Steelers can get away without drafting a corner high. McCain and Blake acquitted themselves well. Gay had his best season. If Cortez can rebound and learn to find the football, they'll be ok. When was the last time the Steelers had a great cb? Woodson? Blount?

Will be interesting to see if Shanahan ends up wanting to stay in CLE, given QB situation, etc, and would Browns let him make lateral move ?

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora · 7m7 minutes ago
Wouldn't be shocked if it played out that way. Heard Browns have reached out to guys like Charlie Weis in the event Shanahan is gone

Was just about to post that.

I'd love for Shanahan to stay, I think more can be done with his offense.

I'm not well versed enough to know who I'd even want as an OC if he did leave so I leave that to BG and Wes.

When I say high I mean rounds 2-4. I don't think drafting a CB will magically solve our defensive problems but there were far too many 3rd down breakdowns this year. Plus, while Blake and McCain played well i'd feel much more comfortable with a taller guy.

As for Cortez....i'm worried he'll never come back. His confidence is broken and he doesn't appear to be the fighter that Ike was.

What's your opinion of Mitchell? Apparently he played all season with a torn groin.

Eventually the Browns will get a QB that can utilize an offensive game plan.

Mitchell simply couldn't cover Troy's ass like Clark could. He needs someone to cover his ass. Didn't make many plays, out of position, bad angles. I think he's more comfortable attacking than defending against deep plays/long runs. Would make a better strong safety, but doesn't have the body for it. He's coming back next year, so I'm hoping he can adopt a better mindset. I really think it's about knowing his role, accepting it and trying to be better at it.

Rumor has it the Falcons may roll an offer in with their meeting with Ryan.
Bowles will still be interviewed on Thursday, but it's sounding more and more likely that Rex Ryan will get the job.
